Chinese Game Market Rockets in 2006

Market intelligence firm Niko Partners today announced results from its latest report that highlight the vast growth of the Chinese video game market in 2006.

According to the report China's overall video game market rose by 68% in 2006, primarily due to $995 million revenue accrued through online gaming sales, up 74% from the 2005 figure, and largely driven by consumers' willingness to spend more money per game.

"Chinese online game operators introduced free-to-play massively multiplayer games that are, in fact, not at all free, because gamers spend money on virtual items and services in the game. These free-to-play games helped the market size rise beyond expectations in 2006," said Lisa Cosmas Hanson, managing partner of Niko Partners.
