BM Comic-Con 2009: Hands-on TMNT Smash-Up

BM writes: "Pick up a controller and play for a few minutes, and you get the feeling that you have played this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up! before. That's because Game Arts, the developer of Smash-Up!, worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl along with Sora; you have four player brawls on interactive stages with characters from a classic franchise, and the controls are very similar in some ways. If you play a little longer though, you start to realize that things are a bit different. Health is not measured by percentage, with your character flying further and further from the stages surface with each hit, but is instead an actual life bar like a standard fighter. You do have lives meter though, so all is not lost if your life meter is depleted, but that does bring significant change in strategy from Smash Bros., where getting hit is not such a big deal given your ability to recover from it in mid-air, especially if you're skilled."

Turtles in Time is one if my favorite games ever. And it is probably the games I've beaten the most times. My cousin and I beat it dozens upon dozens of times to improve our completion time.

It was the perfect beat'em up game.

One of the best old school arcade ports, classic.

Still hope they revisit this franchise and give it the Batman Arkham City treatment.

Great read that was, loved D.O.N on the PS2. I reckon it mimicked the Smash style pretty good with a bit of uniqueness for the win condition... something All Stars seemed to have taken influence from.

Nintendo fans are very sensitive, they don't like games that resemble other games of theirs, epecially now since Nintendo is lagging behind in terms of system power. If Mario and Link aren't in it, it sucks. Such a sad mindstate really. Just like people that think Nintendo doesn't have good games because they have less system power.

As a Nintendo fan, I welcome Smash clones. It gives me a chance to play Smash, but with characters Nintendo wouldn't consider using. Yeah, there's always hacks (textures, movesets, music, and stages can all be modded with little effort on legacy Wii, but that still requires going out of your way for the experience)

If the game is horrid, the game is horrid. The reason Smash is the standard is because Smash is just a good game series.

I always considered these "party brawlers" as a subgenre of fighting games. I wouldn't mind seeing more games like them.

"epecially now since Nintendo is lagging behind in terms of system power." Even though they have the most powerful console available...
