GamesRadar: G-Force Review

G-Force was worth a play through, maybe two if you're in it for the achievements, which is merit enough for a movie-tie about guinea pig espionage. The game isn't great, but its much better than you'd expect, and certainly worth the purchase if you're buying it for a youngster.

DAMN! Such an amazing progress. Last we saw the Emu, it was running on a GTX 970. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the Emu running The Last Of Us/God Of War 3/Uncharted 3 by the end of this year.

Excellent progress.

Hoffmann2969d ago

I expect it to be able to play through games like disgaea 3 via emulator by the end of 2016.

Crimzon2969d ago

Disgaea 3 has been fully playable in RPCS3 for quite a while now. I think it's one of the first games they got running at full speed?

The Xbox 360 emulator (I think it's called Xenia?) has made great progress as well, with some early 3D games such as Ridge Racer 6 working at full speed with minimal graphical glitches. I've seen footage of Catherine working well too, albeit with a lot more graphical weirdness, but gameplay was fine and full speed as well.

Great to see strides made with optimizations and hardware requirements decrease over time, much like we saw with PS2/Wii emulation. The Wii U emulator seems to be coming along well also.

nitus102968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

I won't deny that the video demonstates that the PS3 emulator can play that particular game and they are using an older mid range GPU, however what the article did not state was the specifications of the cpu, memory and their clock frequencies. That is also very important as well.

Another question to ask and probably one that won't be forthcoming is: Are you reading the game off a BluRay drive or if not are your reading of a ripped (Err! copied) file?

ProjectVulcan2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

AMD FX 6300
GTX 650 TI
8GB Ram

FX6300 doesn't OC that great.

So the PC is weaksauce. It's hugely impressive considering the specs are hardly going to melt your face off in 2016 terms, I think that was the point of the video to show it runs great on a modest machine.

This is 3+ year old PC hardware we're talking about, and it wasn't exactly top end back then either lol

343_Guilty_Spark2969d ago

This is proof emulation of the PS3 is only "too complicated" if it isn't considered financially gainful. In other words, it's an excuse.

Ravenor2969d ago

They're also running a FX 6300 (Dated, but far more capable than what's in a PS4 or XB1) the highest end product with the Jaguar micro architecture is the Athlon 5350. Obviously, it gets murdered by an FX 6300 in every benchmark.

It's not as simple as it seems. Especially when you consider PS3 and 360 Emulation are something that has been worked on by the community for awhile now. 360 Emulation is still far from perfect even, take the blinders off man.

HWG2969d ago (Edited 2969d ago )

@PeaSFor, and when it's running Infamous 2 at full speed ( or even better @ 4k 120/144 Hz ) what then? If you think the Cell processor is anything more than an over-complicated mess of an x86 processor, you clearly don't have the electrical engineering gonads you want people to think you do. We messed around with CELL Blade servers in 2011, they were cool - they were fun - they were neato. They were ultimately replaced with more standardized hardware (I.E. Xenon processors) because they were cheaper and just ran better.

CELL does one thing well, and that's floating point compute operations. Nothing the PS3 has to offer, software wise in the game department, could ever even come close to maxing out the CPU on any decent mid-range gaming rig.

Let's not forget that the majority of Infamous 2's graphical fidelity (or any other PS3 game for that matter with the exception of a core few titles) relies more on GPU operations, as the CELL structure, while fast at floating point, was awful at doing anything else effectively.

PeaSFor2969d ago

@HWG "when it's running Infamous 2 at full speed what then?"

Hot air dont work, sorry.

Looks like everyone who was saying PS3 emulation is many years away couldn't have been more wrong.

This is great news for people like myself who have PS3 games but no longer have a working console due to crap soldering on the GPU. Now that i think about it, I don't believe a single one of my friends still have a working PS3 "Fat". Pretty much every one of them died.

nitus102968d ago

What did you to your FAT PS3 do mine is still running.

343_Guilty_Spark2968d ago

My PS3 YLOD. I was so pissed. It was a fat 60gb.

IAreBeMrLee2968d ago

I've had my fat boy since launch and it still runs now, albeit fairly loud

Eck02968d ago

my fat 60gb still works like it did since day one.. my buddy had the 40gb that came out later..and his took a shit in like a year..

Is it the type of thing where you can slap your original games in and play them? 'cos I still have quite a few of those.

DarkOcelet2968d ago

Yeah, thats about it :)

Although its gonna take some time to be fully optimized.

Gwiz2968d ago

I think you're being overly optimistic with those games.

Persistantthug2969d ago

How much time do you think it will take, approximately, Pandamobile?

Pandamobile2969d ago

3-5 years? But what the hell do I know

IanTH2969d ago

PS3 is complicated as crap with the Cell and split RAM setup. The fact they can get anything to run is amazing, much less at full speed and on a 650ti.

650ti benchmarks about 2700, the PS4 is roughtly a cut down 7870, and that benches at about 4300. Even if you cut it down, more powerful than the 650ti here. The CPUs are pretty close as well. Sounds like with enough time, they could actually get this running on a system that is PS4-like in terms of power. Maybe they can sell it to Sony as a BC solution lol.

343_Guilty_Spark2969d ago

Sony could have already had an emulator if they invested resources into emulating the PS3. Instead, they chose to invest in Gaikai and profit from selling access to games people may already have.

AndrewLB2969d ago

The 650ti is just over 1.4 tflops. So right in the middle between xbone and PS4.

@Spark

No, they couldn't. Emulators are very CPU intensive and can only run on as many CPU threads as the original hardware does. So you need two very fast processor cores to run this emulator well, not eight lackluster laptop CPU cores since only one or two will actually be used.

Ravenor2969d ago

The processor is just as important or more important in this case and the 6300 is considerably more capable than anything with Jaguar based APU's.

Articuno762968d ago

Emulating simple titles successfully is going to come before getting the more complex titles emulated (and emulated well). That's the nature of the beast.

Rookie_Monster2969d ago

Well, hope this improve as I still have two dozens PS3 games but had already traded in my PS3 to pay for a PS4. With no BC on PS4, this would be a great alternative to relive some of those old classics.

TripleCs2969d ago (Edited 2969d ago )

Rookie, you can't trade in a PS3 you never owned.

Jk, jk.. lol

But yea.. I'm with you on that. Even though I personally don't use emulators much, if at all.. They are a nice option to have around when a console is discontinued and games for it are no longer available. It keeps the platform alive even when it isn't being manufactured and sold anymore.

Rookie_Monster2969d ago (Edited 2969d ago )

Yea, I was about to post a pic of my PS3 trade-in receipt for my PS4 to yet again prove my innocent, until I saw the j/k sign. :)

Emulator is definitely a great option to have, I have been enjoying my PS2 disc games on my PC with improved resolution for awhile now and it is great.

While it's great to be a fan of a particular console, you're certainly NOT neutral nor just a fan. You're one of those fanboys who'll try and sneak a jab or two almost every single time on every article whether it's related or not.

You're kind of like another user here who used to pretend that he cared for all consoles but was a xbox fanboy in disguise (he had a breakdown last e3 were he revealed his true colors and I guess he was banned?).

But I was told that was impossible to emulate the PS3! PC getting better everyday!

Imalwaysright2969d ago

Nope. I was told that it was impossible to emulate the PS3 due to its architecture.

MrSec842969d ago (Edited 2969d ago )

Only if you tried to emulate all of Cell with the 8 Core AMD Jaguar in PS4.
The SPUs in PS3 are more like shaders, than proper CPU cores.

The GPU in this video is weaker than what's in PS4, by a pretty wide margin, it's pretty close to an r7 260X, which has 14 compute units, to PS4's 18.

If Sony or a partner developer was to emulate the PS3's dual threaded PPC unit on a few AMD Jaguar Cores in PS4, while letting PS4's GPU emulate the RSX and the SPUs in cell then it's doable.

All just depends on Sony either dedicating resources to make this happen or them hiring an external developer to work on it.
Hell if a indie or open source team can make this happen maybe Sony would buy it from them and optimize it to work even better.

Code has to be handled by the appropriate pieces of hardware and you have to take into consideration the differences between PS4 and PS3's tech. This is certainly not impossible to make work, it just requires someone to try it out on a PS4.

freshslicepizza2969d ago

sony could have it they wanted to. they managed to get ps2 games to run on the ps3 hardware even though it too was drastically different.

it all comes down to resources and money and sony felt it was not worth their time and effort. yet they decided to get ps2 games to work and sell them for up to $15 each. see, if they want to they can.

i just find it amazing people are doing these things on their own free time on the pc.

343_Guilty_Spark2969d ago

Do you have proof it's impossible?

iceman062969d ago

@Moldy...initially they managed to get the PS2 to run by actually including the chipset in the PS3...which was part of the high price tag that people complained about. It was only later that they were able to emulate.

AndrewLB2969d ago

@MrSec

The CPU cores on the PS4 are too weak to emulate the PS3 because you can't divide up the workload across all cores. You'd have to re-write the games to do proper multithreading. Emulating a PS3 requires two very fast CPU cores at probably close to 4ghz.

MrSec842969d ago

@AndrewLB:

Who said anything about using the CPU cores to do everything PS3 does? LOL, I certainly didn't!

I said the PowerPC threads should be emulated by the AMD Jaguar Cores (PS4's CPU), because this clearly works for XB1's 360 Emulator.
Both 7th gen consoles share the same IBM PowerPC tech, 360 just has 3 Cores, where PS3 has 1, their 8th gen successors both share AMD Jaguar Cores.

PS3's Synergistic Processing Units (SPUs) in it's Cell processor are basically Shaders, like in a GPU, so a portion of PS4's Stream Processors should be dedicated to handling their jobs.

Then RSX can be emulated by the biggest chunk of PS4's GPU.
Besides running a program to translate ISA and RISC CPU Code to PS4's native CISC language or recompile code for the different GPU architecture this is all that would be needed.
A Virtual Machine could be written to handle all of this, it's likely how the PS3 to PC emulator in this article works.

If a PC with this level of GPU can do this then there's no reason why PS4 can't.
An FX 6300 is way overkill when MS has proven that a single PPC can be emulated on 2 Jaguar Cores, each one just handles a thread of code.

Aenea2969d ago

@ImNOTalwaysRight ;)
Well, then you were told wrong. Everything is possible to be emulated giving time and the right hardware.

@MrSec
Also, not saying that I know for sure it's impossible on the PS4, it just won't be all that easy to if it is possible and I doubt Sony is willing to put time and money into such a thing...

Imalwaysright2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

But I was right when I said that it was possible to emulate the PS3. Also don't give me that crap that it is impossible to emulate PS3 games on the PS4. PC and PS4 have the SAME architecture: X86 so it is without any doubt possible to emulate PS3 games on the PS4. If open source devs can do it then Sony programmers and engineers can too andt they would do it far more efficiently than the good people behind this emulator.

rainslacker2969d ago

You do realize that nine out of ten people on the internet have no clue what they're talking about right? The ones that do know stuff usually don't say anything, because no one believes them.

KwietStorm_BLM2969d ago

And who told you these things? Random people on the internet? So it must be true then. But here we are.

Imalwaysright2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

The usual PS fanboys on this website.

Aenea2968d ago

"Also don't give me that crap that it is impossible to emulate PS3 games on the PS4. PC and PS4 have the SAME architecture: X86 so it is without any doubt possible to emulate PS3 games on the PS4."

Ahh! So if I dig up my old 80386 based PC from the 80s, which is also the SAME architecture: x86, then I can emulate a PS3 on that too, huh?

So because both the PS4 and PC have the same architecture it should mean both can run the same programs and perform equally as well? So even tho Intel/AMD keep releasing newer and faster CPUs we are fools to buy them 'cos it's all the same architecture and according to you they perform all the same anyways?

Again, the PS4 might be able to emulate the PS3, but if it is it will take a lot of time and effort. Saying that it's without a doubt possible because they have the same x86 architecture is nonsense...

uth112968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

It's not impossible to emulate, but there's a ton of overhead to do so, likely requires more horsepower than the PS4 has.

Unless people like their PS3 games running slowly with terrible fps (i don't)

Not to mention the amount of time it takes to develop an emulator like this.
