Clues to PS3 price cut in latest financial update

Kyle Kulyk of SMGamers writes "As I perused the news feeds today, I paid close attention to Sony's fiscal update. I have always taken an interest in the business side of my favorite past time and I have often viewed it as an opportunity to look beyond the corporate spin of the videogame industry through to the reason they are all in it. Money.

That's right. Even though some might convince themselves that football players are in it for the love of the game or Britney Spears is in it to perfect her craft, under the cold, harsh lights of reality, videogame console makers and developers are in it for the same reason as anyone else. Dirty, dirty money."

This forecast which they are adamant they will meet, along with the new 45nm cell are the two main indicators of a ps3 slim/price cut.

Hopefully we see something soon.

I'm surprised when Sony execs say "No price cut," they don't turn to the camera and give a big, knowing wink.

Of course there will be a price cut this year. There's no way they'll hit their targets otherwise, as the article examined. The question is, will the price cut be a good financial decision for Sony? They'd probably be better than break even on the hardware right now if it weren't for the price appreciation of the yen, and that will change as the US picks up again but you still gotta wonder.

I've seen many incredible deals on PS3s in many stores. Heck, I even saw in Canada that places like Future Shop and some other big chain and I think wallmart too, have the 160gig Uncharted bundle furthur bundled with two more games.

Future Shop has: 160gig bundle with Uncharted and Infamous

Best Buy has: 160gig bundle with Uncharted, Gran Turismo Prologue, Ratch & Clank: ToD and 3 Blu-ray movies

Walmart has: 160gig with Unchrated, LBP & Killzone 2.

I really think they're trying to flush out these set models of the PS3 cause a new one is on the way. Perhaps the Slim PS3 has more gigs too.

He finally figured out what we gamers already knew weeks ago from their fiscal projection. I hope he's not getting paid for this info.

darkride66, exactly, no price cut will be announced until it is in effect, doing so would only cause them a loss in sales because people would "hold out" on buying.

By people saying a price cut is coming such as MS/devs, they are doing Sony a disservice, however I think amongst most gamers there is a fairly high level of confidence a price cut will happen before years end, and for any non-PS3 owning gamers who are considering getting one it's more than likely they'll hedge their bets and hold off on getting one at the current retail price.

Still. I think it's a bit foolish to wait in some cases, there are many sales now of the 160GB model that comes with one game packed in and additional games or Blu-rays which if the math is done makes the cost of the machine itself around 299$ as it is.

As Chubear pointed out, those sales are awesome, and bundles like a PS3 Uncharted and inFAMOUS, the cost is well worth it.

Sony's expectations of a hefty sales increase can mean two things. They will drop the price soon, or they really expect some of those 100million ps2 users to switch over with Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3 coming out.

Anon19743037d ago

Even Halo 3 hardly made a dent in 360 sales immediately following it's release. They might add to sales over time, but there's still no way that any games announced for this fiscal year are going to reverse what's going on right now.

dktxx23036d ago

Ya I don't think that sales would increase so much either. Its possible, but I wouldn't count on it (Gran Turismo could have a big effect for the ps3, then again it could do very little too.)

TotalPS3Fanboy3036d ago (Edited 3036d ago )

100 million PS2 users switch overnight to the PS3. That would be freaking incredible. LOL. But you never know. It could happen. It could happen.

Halo 3 made a huge dent in the Xbox 360 sales, I remember that month they sold nearly a million units, enough to knock the Wii of it's streak. The next month sales dropped but were still pretty high, like you said probably attributed to Halo 3.

I think all 3 companies are fighting for that 100 million PS2 install base among others. I think it's pretty clear by now that the PS2 users Sony though would adopt the PS3 clearly won't unless they are given a good reason, a reason all 3 companies want to provide for their respective platforms.

If you knew anything, you would know that Price Cuts are never announced before they happen, you don't want people waiting for it, you want some to still go get the PS3 for 399.99 and then you drop it to 299.99 when people least expect it.

I reported you for going off topic. drakride666 article is totally valid and nowhere near a duplicate, while you were busy reporting him why didn't you provided some links to your claims.

OT: 11.9 million PS3 to for Sony to hit their target so there must be a price cut coming.
