PS3 EyeToy Dated for U.S. Too

Early this morning Kotaku reported that the sexy new Playstation Eye for the PS3 is hitting Europe this Summer. We just got news that the peripheral will also be hitting North America this Summer as well.

In fact all of the details are the same for North America including not releasing the price for the thing yet. Hit the jump for the American-flavored press release.

Reminds me of the iSight camera but with better frame-rates.

DJ6208d ago

"640 x 480 at 60 frames/second"
"The free EyeCreate editing software, allows you to save photos, video and audio clips to your PS3 hard disk drive and apply eye-catching visual effects to your images. Different capture modes like time-lapse and slow motion open up a world of possibilities to be explored further in EyeCreate's editing suite, where you can turn your media into professional-looking movies."

Including that Hard Drive as standard was definitely a wise choice. This is obviously going to directly tie in with Playstation Home. Being able to walk into users' apartments and view their home-made clips is going to sweet. Very few people know that EyeToy has a built-in Mic, and the new one makes that function a lot more obvious. I actually hate wearing headsets, so being able to just speak at the TV would be nice. The only concern though would be filtering out Voice input from the background game sounds.

Karebear6208d ago

I'm not so sure I WANT people hearing EVERYTHING in my house. Especially when I'm comparing the squad leader's IQ and mapping to a turnip.

But I love the idea of it mapping movements into games. Better functionally than the Wii and no need for any controller at all. Imagine buying a replica lightsaber and actually using it in the game for something. Not saying its going to happen, but I can dream right?

fenderputty6208d ago

a mic on top. Did you want them to make it pink with pin-stripes?

kmis876207d ago

I agree. It doesn't look like it will fit in with the form of the console like what the vision camera or eyetoy did for their respective consoles. Looks like it'll probably be the best actual camera peripheral on the market for any console though, so I guess that's what's important.

Joystiq Hands-on: PlayStation Eye's Kung-Fu Live

Kung-Fu Live sounds almost exactly like a Project Natal game. With the aid of a camera, your image is placed directly into the game, and real movements are translated into in-game actions. As the concept trailer above shows, you'll be able to kick and punch wildly into the air to take down virtual baddies. But Kung-Fu Live isn't destined for Project Natal. Instead, it's coming exclusively to the PlayStation Network.

Remove the Eyetoy and PSN tags. Those don't belong here as the news isn't strictly about those things. You should add the KungFu LIVE tag though.

lol looked like mortal kombat in a few instances.

i suppose for a psn game its a neat piece of software.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

It would be good to grab some enemies, would be a fight more deeply.

Is good to know the Developers are supporting more the PS Eye, with full Body Recognition.

There are coming more games to play without controllers too.

Trollimite5091d ago

i could totally see that. specially when he was doing the high punch thing.

Godmars2905091d ago

It is nice to see that Sony - might - directly support the PSeye. Make it seem less of an add-on to Move.

ChozenWoan5091d ago

And this shows that Sony's motion control system can do pretty much 90% of what Natal can do... even without the PSMove.

Now if they make it online multiplayer, that would be an...
ULTRA ULTRA UUUUUUUUUUULTIMATE COOOOOMBOOOOOO!

IdleLeeSiuLung5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

Except the additional 10% is what is what makes the experience significantly different. From the article:

"However, this doesn't negate the fact that I'm staring at the TV and punching and kicking the air. Because of the 2D orientation of the game, you'll be facing forward, but moving side to side, which is simply not as intuitive as facing the screen and moving in the same direction."

Yup, still a 2D camera.

ChozenWoan5091d ago

But that does prove that Natal is not as revolutionary as it's made out to be.

Also, add in the PSMove and you get 110% more... thanks to this thing we call buttons. LOL.. but for real, the PSMove takes mocap beyond what even Natal can do. Sony has shown a fighting game that is in 3D and forward facing. Although it's currently gesture based, it can just as easily be made to be 1:1 with gestures for the special moves. All without sacrificing 30% of the hardware capabilities of the console.

Sony's got the best of Natal and Wiimotes all in one system. There is no denying that it will be the most ground breaking mocap system this console generation. But don't take my word for it, just watch and see.

IdleLeeSiuLung5091d ago (Edited 5091d ago )

Was the ipod revolutionary? Was the iphone revolutionary? Was the Playstation 1 or 2 revolutionary? Was the Wii revolutionary?

My point being that most technology is built on existing technology applied in some way that distinguishes it from other products that others put more value on. That is the revolution, not the technical capabilities. With that said, I still believe that the skeleton mapping and recognition that Natal is doing is revolutionary in the sense that nobody else has shown me something as versatile as what I have seen with Natal.

Getting the computer to understand what you see is a research subject for a long long time that predates even the first Playstation.

The idea that something is revolutionary is BS though. Most products that are revolutionary fail and with a second, third or x number of tries does it succeed. That is what we are looking for, because most new products aren't revolutionary mostly improvements (large or small).

5 Reasons Some Gamers Resist Motion Controls

From HDWarriors.com -

At this point it's starting to get old, and it's starting to become annoying. People complaining vehemently about the continued rise of motion controls in gaming, and acting as if their disdain and negativity holds any weight against the coming tide.

But what's the deal with the almost malicious opposition? Why are some gamers so angry that Nintendo's Wii is so successful, and Sony and Microsoft will soon have extensive motion control options of their own? Here are 5 reasons Gamers resist Motion controls:

I didn't know Halo was supposed to be "hardcore". All this time I thought it was just a game.
I don't believe in "hardcore" gaming. Just gaming. People should stop segregating themselves.

Motion controls won't replace the classic control system. At least not for a while.

Playing with motion controls won't make you lose weight or keep you fit. That was never the point of videogames. So if people are overweight or out of shape, is not because of videogames. It's because they haven't done anything else for themselves.

If companies want to tap into more casual audiences in by pulling people in with motion controls, then great.
But it's just something I won't go for. Not because I'm "hardcore", but because it's not my thing and honestly, I find it pointless when I can do the same action with the push of a button.

PirateThom5393d ago

Three reasons why motion controls suck:

1. They don't work as well as a normal controller and, in many cases, are a lot worse by substituting simple button presses for ridiuclous movements
2. Most people play games to relax, not to wave their arms around
3. They don't improve gaming experiences

ChickeyCantor5393d ago

". They don't improve gaming experiences"

Depends on the game.
I could list some few examples but won't bother.

But anyone who believes the classic controller will go away is a lunatic.

doctorstrange5393d ago

But I have my reservations, many games are not suited for motion controls, the Wii has shown many flaws in the motion controls, and how the lure of the casual market can damage games. Oh, and I am lazy - so what, I play games to relax, not work out.

Motion controllers is not suited for most games. Imagine trying to kill 500 enemies in a typical fps or action adventure game. Half way through I am sure most gamers would want to simply just press a button to slash/shoot to kill an enemy. Motion controllers is suited for very games like wii sports with very simple and short gameplay becuase most people I doubt can't cope slashing 500 enemies in gow 3 for a whole 10 hours.

I joked to my older brother who loves the wii. I told him why he wants to go backwards LOL. Since the dawn of time human race have been trying to autmate work to make life simpler. Think about it, pressing a button with your fingers is so much simpler than swinging your arm to hit a ball, why go backwards LOL
