Windows Vista: Benchmarking or Benchmarketing?

Can Vista's performance indices replace benchmarking?

There is a lot of variety in the hardware market: hundreds of types of processors, motherboards, hard drives, graphics cards and other components to choose from. And although consolidation has been going on for several years, leaving only AMD/ATI, Intel and Nvidia as the main players, along with a few motherboard makers and storage giants, finding the right products still can be an exhausting task. This is where benchmarking comes into play, because it helps to measure qualities and characteristics by applying a certain metric. Windows Vista now provides a built-in benchmarking solution to assess component and system performance, but does the so-called Experience Index correspond to what Tom's Hardware and other tech publications find on the test bench?

I got a rating of 3.0 only because my Nvidia 6150LE is holding it back, a major overhaul is coming though; going to get a 550 watt power supply, x2800 gpu and add another gig of ram and I should be in the 5 range (which is now held back by the lower score which would be the CPU, atd X2 4200+)

Got 4.5 overall, but only cause 1gb memory is holding me back

4.9 processor - 4200 x2
4.5 memory - 1gb is all vista needs really
5.9 graphics - 7600gt
5.4 gaming
5.4 hdd 3gb/s

I actually thought the Vista Experience Index would actually do some good by being a universal indicator of performance, but apparently not. Can't even tell the difference between single-channel and dual-channel RAM. =/

I am running:
AMD Athlon 64bit 3400+ (2.2Ghz)
1gig - PC3200
MSI Motherbaord
200GB HDD (internal) + 250GB HDD (external)
ATI Radeon X800 GTO PowerColour 256Mbit GDDR3 (not been overclocked... yet ;P)
19" Acer LCD 700:1 Contrast 1280 x 1024 Res 500cd/m2 8ms Response
(i know the screen doesnt get tested i just wanted to put it in)

i personaly thought my ram or my graphics would be the lowest, but i scored in the 5 and 6 in ALL the rest, except my CPU which scored 4.9
