Sony rejects claims of impending PS3 price cut

Despite recent reports from Japanese analysts and a whole lot of other speculation surrounding the slower than expected start to the Sony PlayStation 3's life (including an article in the Financial Times), it's makers have spoken out to deny that any rumoured price-cutting strategy is not under consideration whatsoever. do we continue to get conflicting stories...

Sony is not dropping any prices soon...I know it's what every one is begging for, but right now it's just wishful thinking. Even at $500, I still think thats expensive, for the casual mainstream.

We need to see the same price as a Xbox360. Then again, MS might cut their already cheap price this X-mas, then Sony needs a plan D, going against a cheaper X=Box with promising second half of the year Titles, coming out.

The problem here, is that once the PS3 DOES get a price drop, nobody can even hazard a guess as to how much. You see, while many sites have conjectured just how much it would cost to make a PS3, nobody knows. One can quote off-the-shelf prices and claim it costs $800+ to make one, but that doesn't take into account any of the other factors.

Many components Sony can manufacture themselves. We've already had atleast three redesigns of the PS3 already, including different mainboard architecture and 65nm chipsets. The new Elite 360 still uses the old 90nm process, so in reality there isn't much MS can do to cut manufacturing cost until they issue a redesign.

So while there might not be a price-drop soon, Sony could definitely leverage a relatively large drop if they continue refining and cutting costs on the PS3's design.

360 woulda followed right after anyway

as soon as sony drops price or even breaths the words price cut, microsoft will drop their price, there is no way they will let sony get a price advantage on them.

Well I doubt this will happen yet...

They are still loosing alot of money on every console sold.

It would be nice, but not yet, they will just loose even more money when each console is sold if they did a price drop at this point.
