Over the past few years, there has been a long running debate amongst Zelda fans. There are some who argue that the series needs to receive major changes, while others believe that Zelda games should pretty much follow the same formula.
It just needs to do what it does best: Retell the Story of Link in a new and interesting way.
my fears of a first person zelda can be put to rest for now
Twilight Princess demonstrated that the series really does need a reinventing. Or, at least, it ought to be good or something.
i just dont know ow i feel about this. in some ways i do kinda think there needs to be change but i love zelda for what it is.
There is a master timeline written and hidden somewhere in ninty's HQ. They can't really veer off that path too much. however changing it up radically has made it fun in the past. I loved windwaker for example. not as much as Twilight but still it was a great reimagining. http://www.gametrailers.com... All in all though I don't think they have ever done bad. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Minish cap (I consider that a pretty heavy reimagining) but it followed the story and was pretty decent in the end. however I feel spirit tracks may be the first one I don't pick up... That is a wicked bad looking reimagining.
Umm... No sh*t? Did anyone think Nintendo would actually change it? They change nothing. The past 5 versions of mariokart, pokemon, animal crossing(there were three), fire emblem, advance wars etc are all the same. Zelda is always the same but in a different location. The attacks are the same(sword attack and spin attack), the items are the same(map compass etc) the weapons are the same(wooden sword/shield, hook, bombs and eventually master sword is used to kill ganondorf). I might be the only one besides smacktard, but I really would respect Nintendo again if they would stop living off past glories and start making great games like they used to. Make answers to mario and zelda, they did it once why can't they do it again?
"I might be the only one besides smacktard, but I really would respect Nintendo again if they would stop living off past glories and start making great games like they used to. Make answers to mario and zelda, they did it once why can't they do it again?" Final fantasy 13>? Madden 92'-2010', grand theft auto, halo...should they drastically change too>?
I got tired of waiting for a good Zelda game, so I went and bought a N64! I am shocked that I bought about 10 games so far and they are still pretty fun to play!
I really wish they would try to change it up a bit. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker so far have been probably my favorite console Zelda games with the former being especially amazing. At first I felt slightly restricted by the countdown, but came to love it as I could watch the entire world follow its normal pattern until you changed it. I hope they will continue to take those kind risks in the future. (Oh and the transforming masks were really fun too.)
As it is mine Jinx, but you gotta wonder a little bit how Zelda would turn out in a different light. I mean it doesn't need a drastic change, but something to set it apart from its predecessors would be lovely IMO. I think the first order of business would be to actually have a voice track and maybe introduce a new villain other than Gannon.
... Maybe but really your going into dangerous territory there. I mean what would mario be without bowser... Oh yeah Mario sunshine =P As long as they reimagine ganon I think it's good but I can see what you mean. There is so much potential in the franchise overall. I just hope they don't make another Majoras mask. As good as it was I was pretty peeved by the time I beat it =P May have also been the fact that I didn't play it until I got the promo disc for the Game Cube though. May have felt dated to me by then... however playing through OOT Master quest didn't feel that bad so /shrug. Ima stop rambling now I could go on about Zelda for days.
" and maybe introduce a new villain other than Gannon." Vaati? Veran? General Onox? Zant? Majora's Mask/Skullkid? Bellum?
Even their names suck. Who the fk is vaati and why should I care. Minicap? Link on a train? To be blunt, I have to say, Nintendo's "idea" of what fantasy role playing is, sucks! I mean wtf. Minicap? You gotta be 9 years old to enjoy that shiat. I remember when I was a teen, I dreamed about wielding legendary swords like Excalibur and Masamune, go on a heroic quest to save some maiden, beat ancient dragons and go on treasure hunts to find hidden ancient forgotten relics that grants the wielder inhuman powers and all this time trying to figure out a way to beat an evil villain. But noooooooooo...lets all get on the train people! Kiddie Link, plays *zelda tune ta lalala talalala lalalala la la la la* lets hop on the train people! CHOO CHOO! CHOO CHOO! Or lets play "HONEY WHO SHRUNK THE LINK" in an all new adventure where Link has to battle an Irish lepricon who has gone rogue! Oh my...what an adventure! Haha, seriously, you gotta be like 8 years old OR a giant BABY to enjoy that. 3 years ago, I went on a quest with some friends deep inside the Dragon kings tomb. It was a dangerous place filled with evil. I was pimped to the bone with my Kirins Osode and my weapon "the destroyers". Despite the hazardous journey, we managed to get to the deepest part of Ranperre's Tomb, where we discovered a hidden section that lead to a sealed door. Once inside this door, we discovered a gigantic notorious monster, an evil dragon named Vrtra. Legends spoke of a battle between a mighty dragon and Ranperre many decennia ago. It was thought to be a fairytale and nothing more but folklore. Untill we finally found Vrtra. http://www.kachosen.com/FFX... NOW THATS FANTASY, kid.
" Who the fk is vaati and why should I care. " You want new villains yet you don't give a crap about them, how ironic. " Oh my...what an adventure! Haha, seriously, you gotta be like 8 years old OR a giant BABY to enjoy that. " holy crap you are pathetic.
zelda is great game but will anyone like to see zeld on PS3 .....i mean put zelda great graphics just like god of war....??? i know this will never happen but hey lol it will be awesome
Zelda on a Non-Nintendo console wouldn't feel right, much like God of War on a Non-Sony console wouldn't feel right.
Zelda on the Ps3 would be nice, likewise with the facelift. But I don't want no God of War violence going on in Hyrule. Just wouldn't seem right seeing ol mute Link decapitating a Goron......though it would be interesting.
Forget new IP for the Wii, who wants that!?! Seriously though, I think I may have to dig around in the garage and find my Wii and hook it up to my 20" tv to play it...maybe not. :P
If even Mario can change, then LoZ definitely needs to change. How many times can you play a game where the protagonist is named Link, his general objective is to help and/or rescue a princess named Zelda from an enemy who usually always ends up being Ganondorf? I mean, Link can't even talk, he can't jump unassisted in any LoZ game except for Adventure of Link and that one handheld game. Why can't he jump? Is there something wrong with his legs? Does he have no vocal cords? LoZ is so damn stale, the only thing holding it up are the puzzles and the obligatory and always difficult "water dungeon".
" his general objective is to help and/or rescue a princess named Zelda from an enemy who usually always ends up being Ganondorf? I mean, Link can't even talk, he can't jump unassisted in any LoZ game except for Adventure of Link and that one handheld game. Why can't he jump? Is there something wrong with his legs? Does he have no vocal cords? " So all zelda games involve zelda and ganon? I suggest you look trough the franchise one more time. Saying all games are about ganon and zelda is ignorant. If you ever followed the story line, it was explained why every princess was called ZELDA. As for link, you can change his name, the character is just known as link. As long ganon has the triforce of power, he won't die, thats why they keep sealing him away. The reason he can't jump on commando is because he only needs to jump when he needs to jump, why the hell would you wanna jump for no reason during battle? You already have the dodge moves, so what more do you want? He doesn't need to jump when its not needed. He will jump if you run over a ledge, and it seems to work. Not really seeing why you want him to jump on commando. The reason he has no voice is because the designers want you to be link( no really im not kidding), so giving him a voice would make him just another hero. " the only thing holding it up are the puzzles" O boy, the legend of zelda is about puzzles? O my..
"If you ever followed the story line, it was explained why every princess was called ZELDA. As for link, you can change his name, the character is just known as link." I just lololled. "The reason he can't jump on commando is because he only needs to jump when he needs to jump" I didnt lol here. But I rofled. And finally, what storyline? The little bit of background info provided by Nintendo on Link, Zelda and Gannon, can hardly be described as a "storyline". Youre delusional. Back to the topic, yes, Zelda's formula needs to be changed quite a bit.
How am i delusional? The story of zelda being called zelda comes to light in zelda II. Not in game, in the booklets. "And finally, what storyline? The little bit of background info provided by Nintendo on Link, Zelda and Gannon, can hardly be described as a "storyline". Youre delusional. " No you are just ignorant and arrogant. If you really want to bash the franchise at least know about them. And link jump system works as it should, you on drugs boy?
I think this saying fits perfectly in this situation "Why fix whats not broken?" Everyone still enjoys the series so why change it? Once people get bored of it and stop buying it then you can change it.
Yes yes, I know about the original princess zelda and why the other princesses are named Zelda. It's still stale. Zelda is always in need of help, Link always looks the same (genetic resemblance can only go so far), and how long can Ganon really keep the triforce of power after being defeated so often? Is Link really that incompetent? Honestly, they've run out of story ideas, it's as plain as that. The gameplay itself hasn't evolved much in terms of combat. The game is literally being held up by the deep puzzle gameplay. And explain to me why every action game (and yes i know that LoZ falls into multiple genres) has the ability to jump, but LoZ somehow "doesn't need it"? You think people would not be upset if say Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, or God of War suddenly took out the jumping because the "dodging moves are there"? People would flip out. It is precisely this kind of thinking that lets Nintendo repackage old ideas as new and get away with it. It is precisely this kind of thinking that stunts progression. LoZ is basically "guy named Link who can't talk, dress up in green and moves from dungeon to dungeon solving its puzzles in an eventual attempt to save Hyrule from Ganon AGAIN and save Zelda" the few titles that deviate from this basic storyline are eclipsed from the many that don't. Also, I don't look like a short, blond haired guy with pointy ears thanks. And I CAN talk. So this nonsense about me being the hero is just B.S. Nintendo came up with so they don't have to hire voice actors. The way of the silent protagonist should have died out with Chrono Trigger and DragonQuest, but of course it hasn't. LoZ is stale, and the reason it gets to stay stale is because of "fans" like you that tell Nintendo they can keep repackaging their old ideas in new box art and you'll still buy it if it says Legend of Zelda.
They should totally make a new Zelda II ( not a port i mean like a new one) for Wii-ware =). But if they can do that magic again like windwaker, it will be great. For those saying the games never do anything new, i guess you didnt play all games. Windwaker, minish cap, majora's mask, links awakening, zelda II, OOT( first 3d zelda), ages/season all did new stuff with the franchise. I like what they do with Zelda games, they should keep it up. Changing the whole formula would just rape the whole franchise.
every zelda mixes it up a little. The Mastery of nintendo is they're blending of old and new ideas.
I think people need to take a chill pill here...Miyamoto is usually a pretty humble guy, and I think all he's saying here (granted i have not read the new NP) is that the new Zelda is still going to be easily recognized as a Zelda title, no first person zelda, no future-istic Hyrule with motocycle riding Link, it's still going to feel the same, which is good, because when a franchise is good like the legend of zelda, re-inventing the franchise is a needless risk.
Wasn't there a quote a while back about Twilight Princess being "the last Zelda of its kind"? The changes don't have to be too radical, but it's gotta bring something new to the table. TP pretty much polished up the OoT formula to as high a sheen as we'll see. Don't get me wrong, I'm still playing Majora's Mask on VC, so it's a darn good formula. But with Motion Plus in place, it's time for Nintendo to deliver the definitive Wii game.
To those that blast me for saying another villain other than Ganon, I didn't mean it like he was the only one introduce in the plethora of games so far, but like Bowser he is definitely the most recognizable. I meant they need to introduce another character with an impact that is on par or even exceeds that of Ganon. Try to throw in a story to atleast give this guy some depth. Not "oh yeah i feel like ruling the world cause its a tuesday"...thats lame. Good example would be Kingdom Hearts or better yet MGS3, IMO. 2 good games that at the end battle made you actually question if these guys are truly evil or victims of circumstance. The Big N needs to step up and get away from these heavily cliche'd and overused plots. Mario should be next.
Actually the Mario team wants a big dramatic story, but miyamoto thinks it just doesn't fit. He thinks its best to focus on gameplay than to tack on a story or vice versa. Look what happened to Sonic. Honestly when you play a mario game, do you really give a crap about saving the princess?
i'm glad it's not drastically changing. Zelda is fine the way it is, all i wanna see it 1:1 controls & updated graphics. naysayers be damned, twilight princess is an excellent game.
Oh yeah, it's an EXCELLENT game. I dropped 70 hours into it and loved every second. But the gameplay staples have been there for over a decade now. I think everyone is waiting for the next "Holy #$%&!" moment, like when they played Ocarina for the first time.
@ 14 - Hatch Not saying TP wasn't a great game at all, just more of the same. Is that a bad thing?...Not necessarily since it was great before as well. I just think its time to think out the box a little and take a chance. I mean if every game took the Nintendo approach and played it safe all the time and didn't experiment a bit, we would still be playing NES games. And when looking at the big franchises for Nintendo, you practically are. @13.1 - Sidar Yeah I agree with the Sonic reference, and I don't want a tacked on story either. Guess I can agree that gameplay should always take precedence over story, but that shouldn't mean just don't put one in at all which is what they have been doing. I'm just saying that something along the lines of classic cartoon shouldn't be so hard to produce.
I get that, sure i would like to see more of a dramatic story with in the mario series. But even though Mario RPG's do have a story and such, those games go on about the princess being kidnapped every time too. I think the whole "mario saving the princess" is part of mario being an icon. Classis cartoon? Do you mean the one with the dude living in the basement(having guests over and sh/t) ? XD Those were based on Super mario bros 2 if i recall correctly. That game was originally Doki Doki panic. I don't recall a different cartoon though...
Madvillain -- I'm not sure we can say Nintendo always plays it safe. The Wii was actually a pretty big risk for them; they decided to just stop competing graphically with Sony and Microsoft. No one could've guessed they'd end up going from worst-seller to first. And look at how roundly criticized big N got for Wind Waker, just for the change in art style (which turned out to be a fantastic decision, as the game still holds up now). I think it's a bit understandable that they don't want a fanboy uprising over their most beloved franchise. ...that said, I DO want something besides Twilight Princess 2 (although I'd buy it first day).
Actually Sidar they were based on SM3 and eventually turned into Mario World I believe. Unless that was another series I'm sure I recall a few episodes with Yoshi on there. Anyways the mention of that was just for lulz and giggles, figured me mentioned that would go over most heads, but I see you know your stuff. :P @ Twin Yeah I guess when you put it that way, Nintendo did make an off the wall choice on its system once again, but we are talking about the games and titles here. Whats so hard with them taking those types of chances on their beloved titles is what I'm asking about. Yeah Super Mario Galaxy was great, likewise with Twilight Princess. But hell wasn't both of those games hella similar to their 64 predecessors?... All I'm asking for is a leap similar to SM3 -> SMW -> Mario 64 and Zelda II -> ALTTP -> OoT And a little voice work, that doesn't seem like much to me. Gameplay is going to always be top notch, I just would like a true AAA story along with it.
I could have told you that, Nintendo needs reinventing before Zelda. I'm happy.
Nintendo did well with the lass Zelda on the wii, improve on the graphic get a best story and make the control tighter with 1:1 and WHAT best wii game to date.
