Examiner: "Atelier Rorona for the Playstation 3 was released this past week in Japan. The latest title in the Atelier series got great review scores and is selling briskly. Naturally, role-playing fans in North America are wondering when they can get their hands on an English version."
It is the spiritual successor to Atelier I believe.
I'm not trying to rain on anyones parade, but I think there is better JRPGs that could be ported over instead of this that we'd want to play. Not only in terms of quality, but the company doing the localization could enjoy profits to keep doing so with sales. Sorry to say, but this will be a game with a VERY VERY exclusive following like Cross Edge...
and cash S/E is leaving on the floor as they try and make the 360 popular in Japan...
If they are anything like Atlus, I'll probably end up buying this.
NIS didn't develop Cross Edge. They only let their characters get used in the game.
Its not a "hater thing"
Cross Edge would be a good game...if it didn't have annoying menus, time taxing battle system, and piss poor graphics for a PS3 game.I tried to see if I liked it twice, once on the JPN PSN demo and I borrowed it from a friend who imported it.It is an outdated game with qualities that very few would like or forgive. If you enjoy it,thats fine but I'm not a hater simply because I gave the game a chance and I know how the SRPG genre works. After all I played SRPGs since the glory days of Shining Force. Its just not a high quality game that offers innovation or gives a new perspective on the SRPG
i find it refreshing as a old school gamer to see sprites still being done.
the battle system is alot like namcoXcapcom in japan which are lots of fun but what they did with this one for the sake of being unique was make it a crossbreed which i found very nice. but it all in taste.
im sure we can agree to disagree, since i take NIS and atlus gamers to be the few real gamers left in the world
I hope NIS America will do it, from what they say in the article is that they were looking into it but no promise of releasing it yet.
We probably going to hear more about it at the end of the summer or during this fall if they bring it or not. Probably with a 2010 release date. Dont think they will do a translation that quick.
anyway , what matters is , unlike the people like you who obviously dont care (but still oddly feel like sharing the thought as usual) , many of us already knows what to expect of the next atelier game in term of quality or content .
So naturally we 're happy to see another one with new features and gameplay mecanics ... is it that hard for you to understand this ?
BY THE WAY ..before you say anything else stupid about the graphics of atelier rorona , i suggest that you play more rpgs (more ateliers games maybe ? )
But look like ur next response... will be like huge NO, seriously.
so shaddup kermit
about cross edge, it is a CROSSOVER RPG, meaning it will generally only mean something to people who are familiar with the characters. that is pretty much what sells the crossovers, character and game familiarity (super robot taisen, namcoXcapcom, etc). if you gont know the games or the characters, chances are you wont like it. Plus american reviewers really only dish hate out to JRPGs anyway so you cant listen to them.
Except sprites dont and shouldnt mean crappy graphics to begin with .
There are quite a few decent or good looking 2d games in the genre , like Odin Sphere , the previous atelier games or Mana Khemia .
Cross Edge simply isnt one of those .
And like someone said , it's not even it's main problem , the gameplay itself is hardly great , with a few glaring flaws , and the game is , simply , for many of us , even hardcore jrpg and srpg fans , average at most . I'm enjoying parts of it so far , but it's not an astonishing experience .
You mentioned NamcoXcapcom , and while the concept borrow idea and similarity with it , Cross edge simply even pales compared to it , and shouldnt even be mentioned in the same breath as Super robot taisen imo .
it's not some case as usual of general sites not getting jrpg and crapping on it , like they would usually do , the game is hardly that beloved in the jrpg crowd .
Imo there is definitely a problem when even in the midst of jrpg and tacticals niches and fans , the game divides so much .
thanks Baka-akaB
i agree with what you said
but just to clear things up, i know that Cross Edge has its flaws and i never claimed it to be a great game or a 10/10. i was more or less point out the fact that its not as bad as people or reviewers say (ie: IGN giving it a 3/10)
about mentioning Super Robot Taisen, i was mainly comparing in the fact that; if you dont know of the characters in the game (being crossovers) then the game most likely wont be something that the player will enjoy. but being the anime fan i am, i enjoy super robot taisen. just like being the NIS and Darkstalkers fan i am, i enjoy cross edge.
i hope that clears up the points i was trying to make
They simply dont know what the hell they are talking about in that area , quite often .
Most of them actually even often post erroneous facts about gameplay and plots point , but most people not playing those game wouldnt see it .
Hell it was even as if , if it's not a final fantasy/kingdom hearts game , or some new bigshot like Persona3 , they'd roll out some jrp word sheet and model with the following words tirelessly repeated " it's a good title for fans of the fans ....." "its plot is generic " "outdated 2d/3d engine" .
That's the kind of attitude you see in gaming journalism that gave occurences like some tearing Xenogears apart at its release , and later finding the same magazine and even same reviewer praising it as the best jrpg ever . maybe that dude finally played the game beyond the first village , after his review eh ?
Anyway i have already not much interest and regards for reviews in general , so jrpg reviews by people that by they own admission sometimes dont even care or like the genre , are even more useless to me .
I really did not like it. I started on hard mode(always do on RPGs, if an option) and was just getting destroyed. I really was not liking it. However once I figured out how to break down items into active skills, and how to actually equip different attacks(I had trouble upgrading weapons for a long time, could not figure out how to get the mats to make the higher tier ones, because as I said, I did not understand how to break things down.) it got a lot more fun.
I also really like experimenting with different combo's, to see which ones I like, as well as which would be best for different kinds of enemys. Such as if it is a single boss I need to overkill, or a certain formation that I can wipe out quickly with multi-enemy hit combo's.
Honestly what REALLY pissed me off was that I did not know about the steps that were needed to get the true ending until after I was far past the point I could do anything. I also don't like how crappy they made prinny, I really wanted to use him on my main team, however he is just... not good.
All in all, I prefer disgaea, but it was still decent, and what it really did was make me want to play the games that the other characters were in.
They're meant for hardcore - read gamers into grinding and micro-managing - "J" JRPG fans.
just like SquareEnix caters to the "mainstream" audience that would enjoy a more simplistic, straight run through a story in a game
I think I forgot a few things. I meant to make clear that I did like cross edge, and seeing how there is not a timer on it, I have to guess I have spent about 70 hours on it. Not nearly as much as disgaea, SMT, or oblivion/morrowind, but far more then any Final Fantasy save 6, which I have played at least 8 times(I have it on SNES, PSX, and GBA, and I also played it on emulators quite a few times).
Also I meant to make the point that the people giving it a low score(IGN), most likely never even left the first area of zeine(because I will be honest, it took me forever because I was just sucking so much).
Also I am psyched up for Atelier, and I want NIS to keep it up. They and Atlus are essentially the only bastion of hope for JRPG fans.
