FF13 and FF13:V are supposed to center around two different factions in the same FF13 universe. Battle systems are both action oriented but 13:V is supposed to be more action than 13. I think that at some point the stories end up affecting eachother in some way but not sure.

With Final Fantasy XIII, it's your typical RPG style game with turn-based gameplay. Which is the same as every FF up to date.

With Final Fantasy Versus XIII, it's more like Kingdom Hearts. It's an action-RPG game, and it's not turn-based. If you know how KH is played then you'll get a rough idea how Final Fantasy Versus XIII works.

It would appear that ff13 and MSG4 will be slugging it out for the Best Graphics Award this year. The hair and jacket on dude is jaw-dropping amazing!!!

I think that this game will be a system seller even though most people will not buy the game. Stay with me a second. I think people will buy the system after this game beacuse of what the system can do.

MGS4? Best graphics of the year? In what universe? Here's some higher-ups: Gears, GRAW, heck even Rainbow 6 gives MGS a run for its money from recent screens.

...and the FFXIII developers have all but come out and said these "screenshots" are faked. At e3 06, they claimed this was "real gameplay" running in "realtime" on "real PS3 hardware", yet in October/November, they came out in the press and admitted they were barely started coding the White Engine, and that they weren't even yet at the stage where they yet had an idea of what the White Engine could actually DO- they were still running on expectations. The precise competion percent they gave for the White Engine was 6%. And that was ~6 months after they had demoed "real gameplay".

So in 6 months, they went from demoing real, live gameplay to being in the infact stages of coding the graphic engine? Seems odd to me.

Also, Figboy is right. Dev can turn around and do in-game demos within weeks. I'm not going to doubt Square Enix on this one. Even if the in-game graphics are 80% (random percentage) close to mock-ups, I'll be happy. We also have no firm release date so we (the community) have no idea where in the dev process that FFXIII or Versus is in.

from what i can tell, the screens are all from the extended CG trailer they showed a while back.

if anything, look at the FFXIII trailer (which is about 60% ingame), for an indication of what Versus might look like ingame. just darker and more, uh, blue.

@calderra, Square said that the FFXIII trailer they showed at E3 was real-time except for the exterior train sequences, and a few closeup shots. the parts in the forest, where she's flipping around shooting the guys inside the train, are all real time.

also, a game engine is more than just it's visuals. there's physics, AI coding, and all sorts of other things besides graphics. 6% can easily mean that they have the graphics part down, but things like AI scripting, battle systems, physics, are nowhere near complete.

they said that it was a real-time representation of what they'd like for the White Engine to produce.

with a graphics style in place, how hard is it to code a quick, non-interactive video showcasing said graphics?

the Heavy Rain people through together their real-time demo (which i got to see running on PS3s at E3 last year), in two weeks.

also, having worked in the game industry for roughly 3 years, i've seen how fast a game can develop.

Neverwinter Nights 2, for example, was an unplayable mess when i was brought onto the project. at the time i left Obsidian, about 4 months later, everything from the game engine to the graphics was totally different and more polished (but still had a long ways to go before ship date and completion).

point is, without actually working at Square-Enix, thus knowing exactly how their production line and schedule works, throwing out quotes and percentages mean nothing.

take for example, Insomniac. in a recent interview, they said that they just started work on Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction right after Resistance: Fall of Man shipped (November 2006). but just look at the released, *IN-GAME* screenshots. amazing looking. and the game is scheduled for a fall 2007 release. practically a year later. impressive, to say the least.

it's not impossible to think that Square's White Engine is incapable of delivering the visuals we saw at E3 last year, even at 6%, especially when we don't know what the 6% entails (ie, Graphics, Physics, AI, etc). haven't you ever downloaded a torrent with multiple items, and checked it's progress, noting that some items are %100 downloaded, and others are at maybe 25%, or, i dunno, 6%?

I think you have lots of very valid points and your info does seem to square with things. However, I think you are a bit off on the RC Future stuff. Insomniac said there has actually been a core team on the game ever since deadlocked shipped. The footage from the recent trailer is from last september. It is just that they moved into full production right after R:FOM shipped.

This tittle appeal more to me that FFXIII seriously Action/RPG are my weak point. But FFXIII its hyper me up lately too... ohh, man lighting its a gorgeous girl :). But probably Nomura its working full time just to finish up Core Crisis & Wonderful World and then we can concentrate over Versus along with the new "Kingdom Hearts" or KH spin-off title.

Movie Cut scenes like in all PS games. Blu-ray will allow pieces of Advent Children like movies clips pasted between gameplay and PS3 fanboys will love it reguardless so its gameplay(not really), see i saved all you the trouble of fighting.

Like the video ram of the PS3 would allow for such visuals although if they keep the plain Anime look(smooth cartoon look) anything possible i guess, NOT!. its a funny!, you like!.
