SCEE: PS3 vs Wii is like PS2 vs N64

David Reeves set a hard precedent for classic Sony Computer Entertainment Europe quotations, but his replacement Andrew House is trying his best to catch up.

Newly appointed SCEE president Andrew House has argued that Nintendo Wii owners will upgrade to the PlayStation 3 at some point as they seek more advanced features; he attempts to prove this point by comparing this generation's battle to the PlayStation 2 versus the Nintendo 64.

Is House even Serious?

N64 couldnt compete with PS2 ... WELL OF COURSE DUMBASS! N64 WAS COMPETING AGAINST PSONE!!!!!!!

''That is unless House actually thinks that the PS2 and N64 were going head to head, of which they were for around a year from 2000-1; the poor N64 didn't really stand a chance. That generational battle was between the PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube and Xbox; the PS2 winning that battle is certainly one to shout about, but at least get your history right.''

''I think this is the kind of Sony arrogance and idiocy we hoped was put behind them''

So true.

I already see people talking about that X360 rep. no its about House right now so dont even try.

lloyd_wonder3090d ago (Edited 3090d ago )

I think he means the N64 selling 32mil units and the Gamecube selling only 19mil units. He's correct in that right.

If Sony launches its own motion controls, it could be a real threat to Nintendo, with the HD adopting casuals. Touch the market before Wii HD hits.

Then again, his information could be wrong.

techie3090d ago

He's a bigger douche than Reeves.

madmonkey03089d ago

i think he is referring to the difference in tech between the consoles, saying the gap between the ps2 and n64 is similar to the technological gap between the ps3 and the wii, even though they are supposedly of the same generation.

techie3089d ago

I no think so: ""If you look back at previous life-cycles, like PS2 versus N64" - they weren't in the same life cycle.

myothercar3089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

Maybe he meant to say PS1? Because I don't know of anyone who considered the N64 "entry level" to the PS2. I've gotta plead ignorance here- I don't know what's so crazy about what he said. People are reading it how they want instead of focusing on his point: a PS3 with motion control will be a true upgrade over the Wii in every way you can think of. Since this generation is on-pace to last so long, that leaves Sony plenty of time for Wii owners to feel the pressure to get something more powerful, i.e. a PS3.

techie3089d ago

I think they should concentrate on their own business, not the Wii's. The Wii audience MIGHT move to the PS3 - but the price will have to be god damn lower.

N4g_null3089d ago

LOL WOW that is just embarrassing no matter how you spin it.

Also it is so funny that the sony fanboy are acting like Wii owners are afraid they have the EYE toy motion controls. Seriously no one cared when it was on the PS2 so why care now? Also it comes out when? Maybe we will care then but hold up.... that is a nice price you got there. Do you guys think the casuals are stupid enough to be dup into a blu ray player?

Ficx that one problem and SONy may get back in the game, oh wait you can't. O well this war is over you guys showed up late.

techie3089d ago

I don't think this is about trying to the beat Wii, it's about Wii consumers also buying a PS3.

And Sony's new controller is set for Sprin 2010.

heroicjanitor3089d ago

They will want to upgrade from an older generation technology to a newer machine. It is a stupid thing to say as people won't get it, and it sounds arrogant.

UnSelf3089d ago

and xbox360 is like those 10,000 games in 1 handheld devices

RememberThe3573089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

The author is trying to get hits by taking this guys words out of context. He's talking about how people upgraded from an N64 to a PS2, and he thinks the same will happen with Wii owners upgrading to a PS3.

"'If you look back at previous life-cycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life-cycle when the price point was right for them,' House told Edge."

He thinks that when they get their rice right they will see many Wii owners picking up a PS3.

IdleLeeSiuLung3089d ago

I think with the motion controller, Sony should focus on the hardcore market. That is where their strength is. I mean look a the PS3. It screams high tech piece of equipment. Then you look at the Wii it screams casual. Then you look at the 360 and it is somewhere between.

From advertising, to design and implementation, the PS3 is for the hardcore gamer or the movie enthusiast not your grannies and kiddies.

2Negativecool3089d ago

with "I think he meant." His comments were made out of complete ignorance of video game history. He obviously has no idea who PS2 was competing with. He is officially a moron that needs to learn, a lot faster, the details of the industry in which he is involved...things like who his competition is and were for instance.

ape0073089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

goldeneye007,mario64,zelda oot,dk64,banjo and perfect dark, body harvest, star fox shadow man etc are better than all ps2\gc\xbox1 games

the n64 has games that will never be forgotten

my heart has an n64 shape inside it

do not talk trash about the mighty, the legendary n64

Rainstorm813089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

i didnt know nintendo fanboys still existed. I kid

There are a ton of games better than the games you named.

Donkey Kong Country was better than DK64

ape0073089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

I grew up on snes and n64,you have to understand my words

and yep dk64 was awesome, but dkc was the best thing ever, especially dkc2

and.......I hate the WII

i like its few nintendo games but as a whole it's a disgrace

rockleex3089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

"If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life cycle when the price point was right for them."

He did NOT say "the previous lifecycle". He actually said "previous lifecycles". He's talking about multiple lifecycles.

Then he went on to say "like PS2 versus N64".

That means he's talking about the PS2 generation/lifecycle versus the N64 generation/lifecycle.

But the main point he was trying to get at is that their data shows a lot of N64 owners upgraded to the PS2 instead of the Gamecube. So basically if Wii owners want to upgrade to HD, then they might choose Sony over other companies once again.
