iPhone 3GS announced: $199 16GB, $299 for 32GB, June 19

As endlessly predicted, Apple's unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3GS -- the "s" stands for speed. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA

"and the current 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately." is this real? why are the prices so low? im assuming this is the price with a 2 year activation right?

4pocalyps33111d ago

do you or anyone else know if they will also release the ipod touch? i just got the xperia and interested in the iphone apps. bu i dnt want to get the phone so myt aswell settle with the ipod touch. but dont want to get one now and then realise the new touch is coming out.

LoVeRSaMa3111d ago

Prices are too good to be true, we can still buy it contract free, I have a feeling apple are making so much money on it they can afford to lower the prices.

There plan seems to be to get one in everyones hands, and make money of software.

Truely amazing, I am jelous that I didnt get to post this news though!

Darkeyes3110d ago

Boy.. They keep on wrapping the same thing again and again with a new gift cover and shoving them down peoples throats. I am really disappointed with the last 2 releases after the 1st one revolutionized the mobile market. I mean 3G and all is great, but no leap from the first one after 2 years!!! I admire their OS support making even the ones who have the original one happy, but come on release a new iPhone (different looking) already with a new interface. Don't become like Nokia who just stick to the same looking interface since 2000. I am looking for a worthy upgrade to mine... Guess will have to look out for Sony Aino then....

I mean change the design a little bit to make it more funkier. I was really expecting an iPhone Nano.. Again hoping for something new, but never came.

On topic: The Prices do seem unreal. but contract part hurts.

TheIneffableBob3110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

$99 is the price with a contract.

The bare minimum price per month is like $70, which equals $840 a year.

joydestroy3110d ago

the Sony Aino doesn't even compare to the 3GS. here's a comparison of the standard 3G to the Aino. add in the new features of the 3GS, and you'd be a little retarded not to pick the 3GS, sorry to say.

ya 2 years but like they said at WWDC at&t allowed iphone users to upgrade regardless if they didnt have their 2 year contract up cause they knew iphone sales would be big and would lock in pretty much new and old people into their 2 year contract for more years to come. I might sell my 16gig for 150 at work and just pick up the 16gig iphone 3Gs since 32 i dont really need ive done fine with 16.

JOLLY13110d ago

A 16 gig iphone for 200 or a psp go for 250...I'll take the iphone.

StanLee3110d ago

The two devices aren't really direct competitors. I don't see the Iphone having the capacity to output core games like the PSP Go. That said, Sony are going to have a hard time selling the PSP Go at $250.

CaseyRyback_CPO3110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

since its probably a way better phone.(which is obvious?) 0_o

But as far as gaming goes, I'd get the PSPgo and add on skype. You aren't finding Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Metal Gear's Sequel Directed By Kojima, Little Big planet, Socom, and burnout on the iphone, thats for sure. For $250, and no 2 year contract of service, thats a steal. But thats if you're interested in playing good games, versus throwing your phone in the air to see how high you can toss it.

poindat3110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

Way to bring the PSP into an entirely unrelated article... But while we're on it, what about the 32 gig iPhone versus the PSP Go?

EDIT: Ok, that makes sense.

(Or how about saving those monies for something else. I don't really see the point in owning either an iPhone or PSP Go, especially at those ridiculous prices, but that's just me.)

JOLLY13110d ago

The reason I didn't bring up the 32 gig is becuase the psp has 16 gigs of memory

Baka-akaB3110d ago

Well the psp isnt a phone , and the gaming side of the iphone is still a joke , even if obviously it makes a lot of money

joydestroy3110d ago

@poindat

you don't see the point because you don't have either.

pwnsause3110d ago

sony is over charging for the psp go. 16gb of flash memory isnt expensive at all.

Rama262853110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

Why compare apples to oranges? And if you want to make it 'fair' shouldn't you give the price of a unlocked/sim-free iPhone or include the total service price?

Yes, the PSP Go is overpriced (at launch), but you're in the wrong place to be discussing that. At least make it a sensible comparison.

Sitdown3110d ago

the psp go was brought up is because in just about every psp go thread...you will find somebody saying how the psp go is still cheaper than the iphone or touch. This looks to somewhat destroy that argument for justifying the psp go's price.

shadow27973110d ago

^Especially when you consider that the iPhone has a touch screen, built in camera, accelerometers, and a 3G phone service. The PSP Go is overpriced, and this is coming from someone who really, really wants one.

The biggest question I have is...When will the iPhone come to companies like Verizon? Most of my friends have that service and verizone to verizon calls are free. If I went with AT&T now, i'd have to pay for extra minutes.

Premonition3110d ago

um AT&T has AT&T to AT&T family for free, anyone in your family can talk to free, but its a great phone and worth it, on the other hand theres rumors if AT&T doesnt step their game up service wise with the iphone apple might choose another carrier.

DevastationEve3110d ago

just get a samsung omnia or the htc touch pro, which is what i have.

it doesn't have as big a screen but it's still got more memory and a microSD slot.

also, it's not so bad to switch either. but if most of your family and or friends have verizon you might just stay with them anyway.

oh, and to activate any of verizon's smartphones you HAVE to have a data plan. it's mandatory now since too many people went berserk over their pay per megabyte plan bills.

Blades083110d ago

I believe the AT&T exclusivity contract ends at the end of 2010 or 2011, it was for 5 years and this is the 3rd iphone (3 years).

Carl14123110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

No thanks i'll stick with my Creative Zen MP3 player which costs less than half as much with the same amount of space, and doesn't have stupid DrM restrictions, and use my phone separately

DevastationEve3110d ago

yep! an all in one device sounds appealing until you're stuck with certain protuberances like drm or data plans.

and these phones aren't cheap people. just to own the iphone and have it on at&t service means these smartphones can cost you $1200 a year. it's not cheap, you might find some value, but it's HELLA expensive. not to mention that itunes store means you pay per song.

Baka-akaB3110d ago

It's a moot point imo with so many jailbreaking the iphone and so many in the world not using AT&T .

Rama262853110d ago

The new iTunes is going to have Drm Free songs.

"Now, every song available on the iTunes Store is an iTunes Plus song. That means you get high-quality music with 256-Kbps AAC encoding, making every song you download virtually indistinguishable from the original recording. iTunes Plus songs are all free of burn limits and digital rights management (DRM). So the music you buy will play on iPod, Apple TV, all Mac and Windows computers, and many other digital music players." http://www.apple.com/itunes...

No more DrM restrictions :)
