Pachter: No New Xbox for 5 years.

Examiner writes - 'Michael Pachter, a research analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities appeared as a special guest on last weeks episode of the Bonus Round, a gaming round-table talkshow on Gametrailers.com hosted by Geoff Keighley.
In the final segment of the post-E3 special episode which aired on Sunday, Pachter predicted that Microsoft would not release an "Xbox 720" (a nickname for the next Xbox) for at least five years.'

I could have sworn that when the 360 came out and Microsoft killed off the first X-box they said that a shorter lifespan was the way the industry was going or going to go. I remember having quite a few conversations with the Microsoft faithful on this site about this over the past two years. You know that "7-10 years is to long bring on the next X-Box" crap.

So lets just add this to the list, Console life cycles, HDMI, bigger storage mediums (DVD vs Blu-Ray), HDD on every console, HD DVD (RIP), and a few other things that Microsoft's gaming division has been dead wrong about this gen.

The faulty hardware I bought made me all kinds of non accepting of the platform, but this growing list just lets me know that there full of s#!7.

You might be right about Microsoft killing for money, but the Xbox 360 is decently profitable for them (at the moment). Therefore, they're not in the rush to move on to the next line of hardware, unlike they were in the last generation. It's the same reason Sony was and still is in no hurry to completely move on from the massively successful PS2.

I'll tell you whom this is good news to, if Pachter is even half-right in his prediction (which is a big "if"), is Sony. The last thing Sony wants is for Microsoft to release a new console a year or two after theirs again, and have the head start that they did, forcing Sony to rush to market with new hardware themselves prematurely. If we see a new Xbox 720 in 2012 or beyond (although I'm predicting 2011 myself), that gives Sony ample time to develop, hype up, and release their PS4 at around the same time or shortly thereafter, and not have to grant Microsoft that 1-year advantage again.

We'll see how this all pans out. Strategically for the next generation, it might be in Microsoft's interests to release a new console earlier than 2012, but gamers might not be clamoring for new hardware before then.

I sometimes enjoy Omegas posts because they always seem to piss off the SDF but come on bro. Natal seems nifty don't get me wrong. I like the direction it's headed in. But it's not enough to extend the life of a 2004 pc for 5 years.

If the ps3 and 360 really have 5-10 more years of life in them. Then come 2011, Gamings going to start getting really depressing. Mostly due to memory limitations on both systems. If that's the case then I'm gonna be playing mediocre pc ports...

But then again that would give me time fully enjoy Diablo 3 and a couple of those nifty MMO's that are coming out.

He based his opinion on what Microsoft said which is to (in a sense) relaunch the 360 as a true entertainment system with online features and Natal leading the way. It's not a far fetched thing to say anybody can see that the 360 will be transformed into something more than a simple console it will leapfrog the Wii in regards of what I just said.

Once the PS3 gets close to MS in sales numbers MS will no doubt release earlier than the rest. As well as MS has done this gen they know that they must launch before the competition to get an edge. MS talks the talk but is still too worried to launch alongside Nintendo and Sony. Besied within 3 years there will likely be more open world type games like possibly the new Rockstar Exclusive game Agent that will not be able to be done on the 360. We'll just have to see.

You guys are all noobs patcher included. The new xbox is coming out next november bet on it and Natal will release with the new box. They didn't give it a release date so its definitely going to coincide with the new xbox. Plus every new console release 4-5 years in the previous consoles lifespan however that doesn't mean that the older console will be discontinued Sony has proven this 2 twice already something that microsoft has yet to do and sure has hell won't start now. Xbox cannot last another 5 years on the market, ps3 games are already visually superior and its only 2 and half years into its lifespan. Mark my works next november get ready to cough up some money for the new xbox. Lets just hope it doesn't get rushed again.

While DVD9 is probably the biggest hurdle of keeping the 360 alive for another half dozen years, one has to wonder about those new 50 GB DVDs that are being developed though. Apparently, the disks can be read by old DVD players which would mean it may be possible for 360 games to hold 50 GB of data in the near future. If this can happen, then storage space would no longer be an issue at all.
