Edge: Xbox Controller Still Has A Future, Says Don Mattrick

Don Mattrick, senior VP of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business:

"I think we've got the best thumb-based controller ever created," Mattrick told Edge. "We're not going to take anything away. There will be controller-based games. What we're really doing is adding to our platform; when I think about Natal, I think of it like a Guitar Hero controller-it fits the experience better. There will still be games that use the controller, games that use only Natal, and games that use a combination."

"There will still be games that use the controller, games that use only Natal, and games that use a COMBINATION."

Best news about Natal so far.Now i can really get excited because my fear was that Natal might not work with a 360 controller at all.Now imagine squad based tactical shooters where you use your controller to move forward, backward and to shoot, but natal work will be in you physically moving your controller to aim,use hand signals and voice to order your troops around and also to lob grenades etc.

Now that would be cool.

the possibilities are staggering. Imagine playing Mass Effect where you can actually converse with the NPCs instead of a dialog tree. Imagine a CSI type of game where you physically look around the room & "grab" evidence. There are all types of things that can be done with the combo of the controller & camera. Immersion & replayability increase by infinite amounts. I expect a fall of 2010 release for the camera. If the price is reasonable at all, I expect this to be huge for Microsoft.

As impressive as Natal is, i dont think it will have a huge impact unless Microsoft bundles Natal along with a standard controller with every 360 sold.If they can do that then it will be huge.

the Elite may be around $300, the Pro $200, & hopefully the Arcade obsolete. I can see them offering each sku bundled with Natal for $50-$100 more. Keep the cam $100 or less, & I think they're set. I'll be waiting for the squad based tactical game where I can give voice & motion commands to avoid detection when enemies are in range.

I doubt Microsoft will ever discontinue the Arcade but what they could do is revive the 20gig and call that the Arcade and sell it for $149.

doing away with controllers completely would be console suicide.

Hopefully natal is fun to use but i don't think anything will ever top a controller.
