US retailer GameStop is expecting price cuts for the PlayStation 3 and Wii in the third quarter of its financial year.

Speaking during a conference call to investors, CEO Daniel DeMatteo said that the company's forecast of 33.5 million hardware unit sales factors in price cuts on current hardware from Sony and Nintendo.

I don't get this comments that its not affecting you if you own a PS3 already.

Because it does. The platform that sells more, gets more 3rd party support. You see it with the games on 360/PS3. 95% of all games look best on the 360.

Furthermore, you've seen with the PS2 that it even got to a point it got exclusive 3rd party support when the sales accelerated.

Besides that, 1st party support will also increase if the sales revenues are higher with more sales. PS3 sales on main and expensive IP's like KZ2 with 80 to 90 mln. dollar invested are not that high. So recovering the costs is already a tough job, let alone making a lot of money on the game for investing in the next installment.

So yes. Hardware sales are important, also for current PS3 owners.

So how come the wii isn't getting more third party support than the X360?(not counting shovelware of course). Ok its the wrong market.
Lets say you are talking only about the ps3/360, clearly even you know that the ps3 is harder to get the juice out of and arguably it has more juice to give, but in the end we pretty much get the same game you get, and these days the games are looking pretty similar, look at resident evil 5, the are almost the same.

"Furthermore, you've seen with the PS2 that it even got to a point it got exclusive 3rd party support when the sales accelerated."

We are so far in this generation already, that it is pretty impossible for one console to have a lead like the ps2, well the wii could but those types of games don't sell very well on the wii.

As for the ps3/xbox360, Both consoles offer a huge market, it would be very silly for third parties to make an exclusive to a system if there is demand for their title on the other platform as well. MGS4 was being developed even before the ps3 launched so they couldn't forsee the sales success of the xbox360, also japan had very little sales of the xbox360. Mgs4 might come to the 360 who knows, and good for 360 owners and good for konami everyone wins!

Imo killzone 2 doesn't interest me at all, for some reason it got hyped up a lot, i think most ps3 owners saw this in the end.
But then how come Sony has the largest first party dev teams with its 3rd place? Isn't it strange that Nintendo; whom have earned so much money don't have a larger first party then Sony?
Microsoft have also been selling their console well but then they cut down on their first party studious. Obviously their business model is very different to yours, and whose model am i going to appreciate, Microsoft's or yours...

Sales in the end may be important but in the current gaming climate everyone is doing pretty well, hell even Sony are starting to make a profit.

I wonder by how much they will be cutting the Wii's current price.

lloyd_wonder3010d ago

why would they cut the price?

Anybody have Nintendo's forecast for FY 10?

I wonder the same thing it really isn't needed, unless Nintendo feels everyone has a wii I suppose. Other than that it doesn't really scream "price cut needed!" Yet everyone seems to be expecting and predicting one, so now I'm left to wonder how much this alleged price cut is supposed to be.
