Why Realism is yesterday's news

Just about every modern video game focuses heavily on realism, it is a factor that features a lot in most reviews and it finds its way into just about every nook and crevice possible. Why can't you have great gameplay and realism? I for one do not feel like I should have to settle for one or the other. I think devs will go the "realistic" route when it suits the game. How do you make a realistic Rachet and Clank?

To answer your question, you could be forced to go to war and possibly be killed in the Army, thats not my idea of entertainment. I am not aware there are football kicking sims out there. I know chances of me joining the NFL are zero so why not play a realistic game that lets me experience it to a degree?

to state we should avoid realism in games because we are attempting to escape real life is inaccurate. We are trying to enter an alternate reality, not avoid "reality" altogether, therefore, making that alternate reality void of realism makes no sense.
