For a decade, the series ran on SNK's aging Neo-Geo console, while technology and consumer tastes shifted away from pixilated sprites to 3D visuals. With The King of Fighters Neowave, SNK Playmore brought the series onto new hardware: Sammy's Atomiswave, an arcade board based on Sega's NAOMI system. But despite the upgrade, Neowave continued to use the same pixilated character sprites found in past KOF games, placing them against 3D backgrounds. Its look was unsettling and incongruous, but the latest entry in the series, The King of Fighters 12, looks beautiful. This reinvention of the franchise came out last year to arcade, and now it's headed to the PS3 and 360 with some console exclusive tweaks."
