Sony Marketing Failures Have Caused PS3 Downfall

Despite a record breaking launch, PlayStation 3 sales have since failed to accelerate to expected levels and the Japanese console has been left trailing both the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 by a considerable margin. Much fuss has been made about the price point of the PS3 and the dire need for a reduction, and although it is the most expensive option in the home console market it is by no means overpriced. Marketing for the £300 console has been few and far between here in the UK, where Sony has relied heavily upon brand loyalty to drive sales. This is the area where Sony has faltered, and they must acknowledge this fact before it is too late.

The story is too old to be commented.
socomnick3391d ago

Sony truly has bad marketing. Its either bad marketing or no interest in the product.

thebudgetgamer3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

its neck and neck with the 360 every year they have been out toghether. so is good marketing the only thing keeping the 360 ahead? or the fact that it cost two hundred dollars?

CaseyRyback_CPO3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

and the 360 launched a year+ earlier in regions...

But agreed, sony doesn't spend 30 million to advertise 1 game.

thebudgetgamer3391d ago

besides the great games i can buy witch i wont go into because we all know what it is with that. i havent watched regular television in weeks. everything i want to watch on tv i can find on the web browser on my 1080p tele.

:) and one day a 360 will be sitting next to my ps3 thus making me an even more happy gamer

Saigon3391d ago

i guess there were too many positive sony articles...i guess this is the first to even things out...

Genesis53391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

Well one thing is true. When only the more affluent gamers can afford the PS3. It cuts down on the riff raff in its online gaming.

I actually prefer the more mature online community that it offers.

I can see by the disagrees that some people like to listen screaming foul mouthed adolescents while trying to game. Not me.

Fleet Fox3391d ago

PS3 can still win!! Right guys?

CaseyRyback_CPO3391d ago

a distant second? The ps3 and the 360 are the biggest losers this generation. The Wii is 1st, dont forget that. 1st in sales, which matter most to you. Last in game quality of course.

SCE had their hands tied the last few years with Sony Corp.'s profit mandate. This year seems a little different though. It sounds like Sony Corp. has lifted the mandate a little, giving SCE more room to spend money.

Sony has a plan for this year. It includes a price cut, heavy advertising, and a strong first party line-up.

Saying that Sony doesn't have a plan to increase sales is like saying the MS isn't going to have new games at E3.

morganfell3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

Ghostbusters anyone? Marketing is deception and for companies that actually have nothing. Sony lets the facts speak for themselves.

pixelsword3391d ago

I'd knew I'd see at least one of these before E3; now I have to wait another few weeks before the other 9,000 of them hits just a day or so before E3

morganfell3391d ago

It could be worse. Sony could have used marketing to push out a console that had a high failure rate. That example alone proves marketing has little to do with truth.

Instead Sony quietly offers quality without the need to brag.

INehalemEXI3391d ago

Doom and gloom much? How do you consider the PS3 to be in downfall when its actually outselling wii now in its home territory for 2 months and its doing so with out a price cut...

spin much?

RememberThe3573391d ago

The author is in Europe where they really have no universal sales tracking system. So how the hell can he say that the PS3 is in a "downfall"?

They are running Japan right now, and everything we hear from Europe sounds good. The only place that looks bad is here in the States. This
isn't to say that Sony doesn't need to step their game up, but I defiantly wouldn't call it a "downfall"

jaysquared3391d ago

Not matter how sony fans spin it Sony had 150+ million PS2 users and completely obliterating the competion last!! Actually it wasn't even a competition last gen! The PS2 was never challenged by the Xbox or the Gamecube. So going from a BIG and I mean BIG lead in 1st place to a very BIG last place margin is a very bad thing!

Its funny how Sony fans use the 1 year head start the 360 had or the lower price of both the Wii and 360 as the reason the PS3 is in last. I remembera few years ago how many Sony fans were proclaiming that the 360s price point or 1 year head start wasn't going to matter once the Mighty PS3 hits the market! All that talk about Sonys fan base of 100+ million is going to stick with the Playstation brand and that the Xbox will become the next Dreamcast.. Whatever happen there guys?

CaseyRyback_CPO3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

this story.. is clear... (Zelda Rubinstein)

INehalemEXI3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

sonyfans don't care that ms is shipping millions of faulty hardware units...our sh!t works ...we play exclusives that make alan wake want to stay in bed.

yeah mr. wake looked up and saw the helghast coming and played dead.

sure if you reversed the flow of time I guess you could twist that around .... sales are in an upfall , or something.

good luck with your disagreeing may it bring you joy...

"How do you consider the PS3 to be in downfall when its actually outselling wii now in its home territory for 2 months and its doing so with out a price cut..."

you can say the exact same thing the other way around(just make 2 months more like several) since japan is also sony's home turf...

I agree sony hasn't done the best marketing but it is far from being a downfall. The Ps3 has legs,it may not outsell the wii and 360 for another couple years but Sony aren't going to stop turning out the good games.

Dragun6193391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

Wow, A PS3 doomed article when the PS3 recently got some good news.
How about that. Someone didn't like the news about Ghostbusters becoming a Timed exclusive in PAL territories.

Anyways PS3 is far from being doomed. As a matter of fact its starting blossom especially in Japan as it has sold more units than the Wii for two months and a half and its seems it will likely to continue through out the year along the increasing support from third party such as Namco Bandai (Tales of Vesperia), Tecmo (Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Quantum Theory), Konami (MGS), Sega (Yakuza 3, Valkyria Chronicles) and EA (EA Sports Complex).

If anything, The PS3 is making its comeback. Though I do agree that their marketing isn't great but instead of wasting money on marketing, they put their money in producing high quality first party titles. The sooner they get those quality games out the sooner the PS3 sales will pick up, is what believe. So the sales may be down but they will eventually pick up over time such as Valkyria Chronicles.

nycredude3391d ago

And you are truly a really annoying troll.

Maybe it just you really hate Sony or you just don't play games.

morganfell3391d ago

No "Sony is teh doomed" article can change the fact that this E3 other console manufacturers are just a bug on the Sony windshield. I love the fact I will be there in person to see it happen.

It's too late to try E3 damage control.

Narutone663391d ago

articles like these are bound to come out. Can't wait for all the great games that will be announced in E3.

no-spin3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

i hear all this marketing, sales, strategies, etc. While this site posts 5-10 articles like these on a weekly basis, Im enjoying my PS3 to the fullest, meeting gamers on Home and then playing RE5 in Co-Op with them, replaying Uncharted for the 3rd time, then Everyday Shooter, change to Prince of Persia, go to an intense battle in KZ2 online MP, turn down the intensity with Flower, LBP creativity, Heavenly Sword movie quality, Motorstorm 2 great mayhem. The PS3 offers so much for any owner (all the free online services are an amazing feat) seeing this article is kinda awkward, i ask why are so many people missing out on this great value console?

I dont know if the author is wrong since i dont have the numbers from Sony or any kind of reliable source, nor do i care because im all about exploding all the features my PS3 offers, let Sony worry about sales and marketing, keep the games and Home improvements coming.

IdleLeeSiuLung3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

I agree with this article to a certain degree, except "£2m advertising budget" is actually quite a bit. It is U$4 million for a country that although accounts for a large portion of gaming is still getting quite a bit of marketing money.

I completely agree with the ambiguous message Sony has given regarding the PS3 and the arrogance:

"Price setting is always a headache for us. No game machines are comparable to the PS3, which is neither a genuine game console, home electronics [product] nor a personal computer. It is a new kind of product...

[It will be] consumers who decide whether it's expensive or cheap. If a product offers charm, then buyers will be convinced." - Ken Kutaragi

PS3 is "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else." - Ken Kutaragi

Not that others haven't said stupid things, but Ken cracks me up the most.

Adolf Hitler3391d ago

I love my PS3 more than my RROD box but $ony could've done a little better with the marketing.

GrandTheftZamboni3391d ago

TITLE: "Sony marketing failures have caused PS3 downfall"

ARTICLE: "Marketing for the £300 console has been few and far between here in the UK..."

Even the author agrees that Sony doesn't put much money into marketing. Failure would be if they spent as much as MS or Nintendo, and didn't generate sales. Considering Sony's marketing budget, I think they are extremely successful.

bbblockbird3391d ago

wat a stupid article the first line says in japan ps3 is trailing behind xbox n wii lol okay this is a valid stement n second ps3 is awesome

XxZxX3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

where have bloodmask been without his sony failed article. Thanks Bloodmask.

The article also has no idea if u add XBOX 360 and PS3 US and JP sales together, u get the same reason. Is that fail? where $200 more expensive and still on par.

Dragun6193391d ago

You know?

If marketing was the key to being successful then wouldn't you think by now the Xbox360 sales in Japan would have picked up by now?

Seriously, an Xbox360 bus, a huge advertisement on the Wall with Star Ocean 4 and Xbox360, A Pimped out Xbox360 section in most Japanese retails, and even Xbox 360 super catalogue which spurs propaganda plus its cheap price point.

Yet PS3 continues to rise in Japan without much marketing compared to Xbox360. Its really about the good games that results in higher console sales.

cmrbe3391d ago

"haha sure, thats why PS3 loses in everything possible there is to measure"

Oh you mean the failure rate?.

DelbertGrady3391d ago

Who cares about sales anyways?

FlameBaitGod3391d ago

lol was waiting 4 an article like this 2 hit N4G soon, there was just 2 many good news about Sony

raptorjacob3391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

everyone keeps saying bad marketing. but i would love to do minimal marketing on a game (dont spend a whole lot on advertising) and still sell 1 mil copies or more, making some money. that doesnt sound like bad marketing to me. sure its bad if you want to brag that your system has sold 30 trillion copies of a game so you can throw that out during the heated online arguments.

pshizle3390d ago

sony boys thought the ps3 will outsell the xbox360 within its first year...what a bunch of clowns.

where the heck did all there marketing money go to????

1) games

2) killzone 2

If it was game...would you rather have a bunch of exclusive games or a good marketing???
that is the trade off, if it were so.....

thebudgetgamer3391d ago

the 30 mill microsoft spent on advertising halo 3. sony with that money made infamous and uncharted 2

:) good trade if i ever seen one

BRG90003391d ago

It doesn't really work that way. If Sony increased its advertising budget and/or used it more effectively, they would sell many more games. This would increase their revenue, greatly increasing the amount they can pour into more quality games.

That is debatable and unproveable of course, but it is absolutely flawed thinking to say "by not advertising, they can give those of us who don't need advertising better games!"

Halo 3 sold what, over 8 million copies now? Imagine that without that $30 million advertising campaign, they would have sold 3 million copies less (I think that's conservative, they probably would have sold more like half in my opinon). 3 million copies times an estimated $20 per copy profit equals $60 million! Look, Microsoft doubled that advertising investment and can use it to make great games, or fix red rings, or whatever. And Sony should watch and learn.

shadow27973391d ago (Edited 3391d ago )

^ While I agree with you, I don't think Halo 3 is such a good example. According to Wikipedia: Halo 2 has sold 8.46 million and Halo 3 has sold 8.1 million. I'm guessing at least 90% of those that own Halo 3, also own Halo 2. So I ask you, was the $30 million really worth it? Granted, the record breaking first day/week sales were thanks to the advertisements, but Halo 3 was going to sell no matter what. If MS had used only half of that advertising budget, I believe the difference in sales would have been minimal. Probably around 1 - 1.5 million less.

Of course this is my opinion, but I think everyone can agree that Halo 3 was going to sell, regardless of the size of the advertising budget.

jaysquared3391d ago

You can't just go with how much Halo3 sold.. You also have to look how many 360s did M$ sold from the 30 million they use to market the game. Its no doubt that Halo3 is a system seller but there really is no way to measure how much M$ got back from the 30 million they spent..

no-spin3391d ago

It was the window for the 360 sales to explode, every original Xbox owner remembers Halo for the amazing experience it was back then. H3 was THE GAME for many to buy a 360 and still is the most played game for millions of 360 owners. $30 million is a lot, but this games was very important and still the online is as alive as ever.
Marketing works big time, it got me of the fence into buying Gears 2, which was(is) a great adrenaline rush. (i sold it but whatever the game is a must play).

The point about MS using its money in marketing instead of games makes sense, but we are the ones that get the short end, MS gains more with creating an image that the 360 is mainstream and socially in, good strategy indeed.

When is E3?

ape0073391d ago

they said that they will prepare the biggest ad campaign in the history of the playstation brand

even more than ps2's ads

and also they said,E3 will be the biggest in 11 years and a turining point

I have a feeling that sony will explode this e3

RememberThe3573391d ago

It's plain and simple. People want a PS3 but they don't want to spend $400 when they could pick up a 360 for $200.

Hutch23553391d ago

I was late to the party with the ps3. I purchased a 360 launch day, and yes it rrod, but I got a new one with hdmi and have had no prob. since. I was late with the ps3 since I was burned 6 times with my ps1, I skipped ps2 and got an xbox. I want both companies to succeed. I will continue to support both, but Sony looks to be in a bit of trouble as a whole. I think there lack of marketing comes from the fact that they have been having major financial trouble since this recession started. I know microsoft has also. I am anticipating a loss from sony for the last fiscal year, so I don't see how they can 1.price drop, or 2. spend more money marketing. I hope they do, becuase so far I love my ps3, uncharted, kz2, and of course blue ray. Just my 2 cents.

jden283391d ago

I think that sony will have a Big e3 too. But all the big companies: M$oft, sony, and nintendo have said "Wait till e3 you will be blown away". Those people in the know expect this to be the biggest E3 ever all signs point to a huge E3 for everybody.

What I think will happen is:

1.) Sony gets a huge exclusive or sony takes away exclusitivity of a game planned for 360 originally i.e.. mass effect or gears of war, and unviels their psp go.

2.) nintendo reveals true harcore games at last and some casual but the focus is on the hardcore games while pushing the wii hardware as far as it can go it has more visual than we've seen remember the wii is supposed to be 1 to 1.5 times as powerful as the original xbox which could do HD, maybe there will be a firmware udgrade to get it.

3.) Microsoft will reveal a host of first 2nd party titles (from rare, lionshead, mistwalker, that are designed to show that the 360 has a lot of graphical juice left in it. Live will be expanded and get home like community features. microsoft will also reveal it's zune HD gameplayer, and get an exclusive game from konami metel gear 4.5 with exclusive DLC.
