Connor Beaton writes: "The Secret of Monkey Island is perhaps best memorable for its witty humour and diverse, idiosyncratic characters, such as Stan the used boat salesman or the "three men of low moral fiber". A widely lauded gameplay mechanic was the sword fighting; being a point-and-click adventure, the game hardly had action components. Instead, either Guybrush or his opponent could insult the other one from a list of predefined insults, which would then be followed up by an automated attack."
