One Year Later: Grand Theft Auto IV

TGS writes:

"Today we are celebrating the first year anniversary of one of the most highly anticipated releases of this gaming generation, a game that has remained the "talk of the town" since release. The game we are celebrating today may be the reason you bought a next gen system or might even be the title that showed you what next-generation gaming was all about.

Yes, we're talking about Grand Theft Auto IV."

Good times with that Grand Theft Auto IV, the friend missions for me personally were bearable to a certain extent.

I went into the game skeptical after hearing all the rave reviews. The ravers were right, the game is kicka$$.

Elven63150d ago

Really? The reviews didn't leave me skeptical, they only increased my excitement for the game :p Hearing the game overtook Ocarina of Time on MC was a huge announcement, in my opinion it was well deserved to boot!

There is something unbelievably satisfying about rampaging through the streets and checking your kill number after each bout.

Elven63150d ago

Likewise, not having a tank made it all so much harder! Fortunately their was that subway glitch :P

didn't deserve 10s, more like 8 and 9, for me its an 8.5 game, nothing above nothing under.

raiden_933150d ago

It isn't a 10. A 10 to me means a game has to be perfect and no game is perfect, still GTA IV is a fantastic game even if the story starts to thin towards the end.

Although there is no such thing as the perfect game (perfection being an impossibility)that is exactly why games that perform incredibly deserve high scores.

More than anything GTA IV represented quality. The visuals were good, the characters were memorable, the writing was excellent, the open world was huge and engaging, and more.

The game was alright, for me about an 8.5-9/10, but it was nothing on GTA Vice City and to a lesser extent GTA 3 and San Andreas.

The best things to come out of GTA IV though are definetly the physics, attention to detail(Especially on the cars), vehicle deformation(Brilliant, every ding and dent), the Water(I rate it as probably the best looking in a game, needs some tweaking on interaction and a few other little things) and the open-world graphics, while probably not the best there could be, were still VERY good.

So I really hope that GTA V(Or whatever it is to be called) can continue with those great points, and bring us back to the gameplay and even style of GTA Vice City(PLEASE BRING NEXT-GEN VICE CITY), San Andreas and GTA 3, let us do everything again and make the world BIGGER!

Vice City was always my favourite. I guess it just had more colour and character to the surroundings. I love for the series to return to Vice City.

Elven63150d ago

Vice City was my favorite, possibly my most played GTA game. GTA 3 was good but after completing the game their wasn't much you could do in the city in comparison to those games that came later.

I still remember all that time I spent playing GTA 2 on my Dreamcast, good times, good times! Anyone else remember that douche who hoaxed GTA 3 on the Dreamcast?

i agree with most of what you said but i have to say, for open world graphics i still think its the best so far ( if you take into account all the stuff going on in the city as well )

the only other open world game i thought that looked better was AC, but AC didn't have half the stuff going on that gta did.

i agree though, the best thing to come out of GTA 4 was the engine. the lighting, physics etc... was all tops for me and not many other games have done anything close....

animation was also very good. you could shoot a 100 cops, they never fall down the same way

it was just the story and some of the missions i didn't like that much.

If they remade Vice City with the GTA 4 engine.. i think that would just be my dream game...

can't wait for the next one. Vice city was my personal best though. the city and style had so much to offer...

it was like living Miami vice, except you were the badguy and you won ! lol

@raiden_93
The whole feel of Vice City was amazing, I wasn't around in the 80's, but I can get the feeling instantly from that game, was brilliantly done.

@Elven6
Vice City was easily my most played game, I rate it as the single best game I have ever played, GTA 3 was a good game, I agree it had barely anything to do once finished, but the story was a lot bigger than any GTA(Not including 1, 2 and London) I have played, seemed to go forever, which wasn't a bad thing, that is why I still rate GTA 3 as a very good game.

@DARK WITNESS
I agree to an extent about the graphics, it's a little hard to judge open-world graphics, do you judge them simply by the actual look and such, or do you judge them by the look coupled with everything in the world? For mine Far Cry 2 looks better on the first point(That game looked simply amazing, instant immersion too), no doubt GTA IV has it covered on everything in the world though, I have a feeling inFAMOUS could outdo both of them though.

Yep as I said, if the next GTA's(Hell even any open-world game) could use the same physics, lighting, car deformation and such then it would go a long way to being another good game, the animations were great too, have had a good amount of fun just blowing up stuff to see where it can fly and how, also love shooting someone in the head and just watching their head fly back, fantastic.

Again I agree, a Vice City remake with the GTA IV engine equals me passing out!

The story in GTA IV really hurt itself, in any other game or movie it probably would've been awesome, but the whole serious vibe and feeling just brought you down, especially Niko being a complete downer in everything he says(At one point he just goes on and on about life being crap), it just brings you down as a gamer when you want to be having fun with the game, which the potential was definitely there.

The missions weren't really poorly done, I think that the main problem was that there was a real feeling of 'been there, done that' to them, there were some typically funny and good GTA missions, but a lot were either very bland or just too much of what we have seen/played before, the missions coupled with the too serious story definitely was GTA IV's biggest downfall.

For me, the perfect GTA would be, Vice City story and characters(Tommy Vercetti just pwns any other main character) + San Andreas possibilities(Flying planes, jetpacks, trains, side missions, RPG-like elements(I liked them), etc.) + GTA IV engine and that is the be all and end all game, simple as that!
