Stop to take a breath in BioShock 2's ocean scenes

Things can get, er, hectic in BioShock 2. You're a prototype Big Daddy, upsetting the new Rapture equilibrium established after the first game. The baddies -- the Splicers -- aren't happy to see you again and don't have a problem trying to kill you. Needless to say, you'll be smashing quite a few of those poor (and vicious souls) as you progress through the game. But it's not all heavy action and Plasmid slinging. 2K Marin have created small escapes in the form of ocean floor exploration.

That's right -- you can leave Rapture and not worry. No guns, no fighting. It's a place where the developers hope you'll stop and listen to logs, as well as soak in the atmosphere. Destructoid recently got a chance to hear what the developers had to say about ocean exploration at a roundtable discussion that took place after our demo of the game.

I'm very much looking forward to this, but i do wish they had put it on hold for a couple of years and instead grabbed the license for the system shock series and made a sequel of that. Bioshock is supposed to be the 'spiritual successor of system shock 2 after all.

I think its a good idea when companies release a good game but do not go right into making its sequel, instead they have another project or 2 that they alternate between, Blizzard are good at this, maybe taking it a bit to the extremes as there has not been a starcraft game for around 10 years? a nice gap between sequels builds alot of anticipation instead of bashing them out every 2 years or in some cases every year.

Look at need for speed franchise, releasing NFS games as fast as they can, also looks like they are doing the same with assassins creed now. A nice gap between releases also means they have time for thinking up new ideas that will actually improve the sequel by quite a bit instead of it feeling like only a slightly different game in the same engine.

It can be good leaving time between sequels - often it will time with the release of a new generation of consoles so the new hardware can be utilized to add new gameplay features.

However, sometimes that can backfire. Leave it too long and many of the original development team may not still be there, and it can be hard to get the original feel and essence of the series back without it seeming like a totally different game wearing the same clothes.

By the time Bioshock 2 comes out it will have been over 2 years since the original, so I doubt it will be anything like the Need For Speed yearly syndrome. Gears 2 and CoD4 both had 2 years development time after all. And Assassin's Creed 2, Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2 will have had 2 years by the time they're released as well.
