Acer 'likely' to release Google Android handset this year

Acer Inc., the world's third- largest computer vendor, expects to offer a handset equipped with Google Inc.'s Android operating system by the end of the year, becoming the latest supplier to offer alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s software.

"We have not made any formal announcement of an Android- based device, although it's likely that we'll have one in 2009," Aymar de Lencquesaing, Taipei-based Acer's head of mobile-phone products, said in a television interview today from Singapore. "We intend to have devices that will take advantage of multiple platforms."

Acer plans to use its presence in both computers and mobile phones to offer products that more easily synchronize data between devices, de Lencquesaing said.
