Gender Representation: Is This A Man's Game?

GrE writes, "Video games are a relatively new format, and as such have not been explored to the same extent as film or television. This led me to take a closer look myself at some of the common themes in representation between video-games. While an increasing number of women play video-games, males unarguably hold dominance over the industry, with 60% people who play video-games being male."

I think that is how things definitely used to be, but they are getting better.

CrAppleton3178d ago

haha.. IDK if they're that much better yet

roblef3178d ago

I don't agree. This is, in my opinion, the way things are NOW.

CrAppleton3178d ago (Edited 3178d ago )

Yup.. I agree with Rob.. sure things might be on the verge of change.. but they are still sexist.

And until people speak with their pocketbooks, nothing will change

bgrundman3178d ago

But at least women have some input into making these characters more politically correct. Before 2005 most female characters were blow-up dolls that could speak...

This is a man's world, this is a man's world But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl You see, man made the cars to take us over the road Man made the trains to carry heavy loads Man made electric light to take us out of the dark Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark This is a man's, a man's, a man's world But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl Man thinks about a little baby girls and a baby boys Man makes then happy 'cause man makes them toys And after man has made everything, everything he can You know that man makes money to buy from other man This is a man's world But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl He's lost in the world of man He's lost in bitterness

well the examples were a bit one-sided, but I had a point to prove :)

Yeah.. I'd say at the moment men have the market cornered.. but as we've seen from Liz's article on GrE.. that might not be the case for long

Neco5123178d ago

yeah, this compliments Liz's article well

reluctant_gamer3178d ago

Wow... I thought I was reading someone's thesis. Very good points, hopefully we'll see some changes soon, but you never know.

roblef3178d ago

Yeah, this is a GREAT addition to the GrE site. Well written, thoughtful, clear, and informed by more than just personal opinion/experience.

supercharger51503178d ago

72% of men would rather play video games then have sex with their significant others. Of course games are marketed to men. Just about everything is marketed to men ages 18-35.

roblef3178d ago

Another example of the patriarchal system that informs our society: white men, ages 18-35 control most of the money.

CrAppleton3178d ago

HAHA.. that's a great statistic.. one I've read somewhere earlier today

squidyj3178d ago

I hate statistics for the reason that they can often provide misleading impressions. People start thinking that these statistics imply things, when they in fact imply nothing. Furthermore in many cases only the results are presented to laymen, not the details of the procedure.

I mean, one can look at the statistic that white males 18-35 control 60% of 'the money' (i made the number up) and they might be drawn to the conclusion that we are part of a racist, sexist, ageist society. The truth is that conclusion cannot be drawn from the available data. The truth is that no conclusion can be drawn from that data in a vacuum, well, no conclusion other than white males 18-35 control 60% of 'the money'.
