Popmatters Review: Star Ocean:The Last Hope

Popmatters Writes:

"the minuses outweigh the pluses. Voice acting can be atrocious more often than not, especially concerning Edge. There were times during cut scenes when I actually cringed at what was said because it was so ham fisted. He actually tells the final boss to "Bring it on!" Speaking of cut scenes, there are plenty of them. And they're long-many of them pushing past the 15-20 minute mark and some going on over half an hour. While the combat is fun, it is also not very challenging. I only died a handful of times with an actual difficult fight appearing only after over the twenty-hour mark.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope simply provides more ammo for people who cannot stand RPGs. Except for turn-based, random battles (which I was pining for after disc one), nearly every awful trapping that the genre is criticized for is present. Sappy story, cookie-cutter characters, long cut scenes-it's all here."

bad score. still the average is 8 so the game is still on point.

Yeah, uh....NO.

This review fails. JRPG hating themes at work here.

3.5 You have to be joking. SOTLH is a good game. I don't see how this game could have received such a low score. Having played through almost the fist disk and watching my brother clear the game I would give it around 8.0 - 8.5 Yes i intend to clear the game next week after i beat RE5 lol

Yes the dialog can be very cheesy at times but most JRPGS are. I love games like this! The combat in SOTLH is top of the line for a action RPG. And the story so far is a damn good one. Plus its around 40+ hr game. Whats not to like about that!

The reviewer must hate JRPGS.

Japan will praise the genre as much as America despises it. In the end, these sorts of "minuses" are exactly what the Japanese enjoy.

I don't care about the score given by this site. I'm a Star Ocean fan since the PSone, and I'm waiting for the PS3 version. Maybe it doesn't score high, but I care not. It's always delivered for me, and I have no doubt it'll deliver for me on PS3.

If you're already a fan of this series, I'm pretty sure you'll like this one as well. Definitely ignore this review.

Hope you get to play it at some point.

Thanks ceedubya, I do fully plan on getting it on PS3 when it comes. If it was a 360 exclusive then I'd get that version, but when it comes to gaming, I've been with Sony for 14 years so the controller style is the most comfortable for me. The 360's controller just never feels right. SO3 also got kicked around in the score department and it's my favourite in the series so far. Thanks for the positive comment. :)

MOST LIKELY WAS WAS A NON GAMER TOLD TO REVIEW THE GAME.

3.5, ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND. THE SCORE THAT IT'S BEEN GIVING, 8.5-8.0 IS THE RIGHT SCORE THE GAME IS VERY GOOD, BUT YET CAN GET A LIL ANNOYING. SO 8.0 IS NOT PERFECT AND IS WHY IT GOT THE AVERAGE SCORE OF 8.0 OR 7.9 TO BE EXACT.

3.5 IS A SCORE OF A NON GAMER OR A BIASED REVIEWER, THERE ARE WAY WORSE GAMES GIVEN BETTER SCORES THEN STAR OCEAN.

I GIVE YOUR ARTICLE A -3.5

The game is nothing out of this world...but its a good JRPG... i really need to finish it soon

but with an 8.0 average score... this score is laughable

ThatCanadianGuy3398d ago

Is the game actually fun tho? Aside from the voice acting?
I've been wanting to pick it up for weeks now.

N4PS3G3398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

of course its fun..there's many great reviews out there from credible gaming sites ..and mostly all of them agree its a good RPG

why would someone choose to believe this review from popmatters a pop culture magazine ..instead of respected gaming sites like IGN,GameTrailers,Gamespot,Game sradar,Gamepro ..and others

The game is good..and it gives you so much content for 60 bucks...compared to games now days ..with short campaigns and zero replay ability ...the gameplay is great ..the story is interesting ..and its definitely a solid/deep JRPG

I have nothing against this review...whatever .if thats what they think ..its cool...but i take with a grain of salt what a pop culture mag has to say about a game that has been getting mostly good reviews from gaming sites.

Actually, I absolutely detest that Lymle character. I cringe and curse everytime single time she opens her mouth and says "'kay". That fool alone makes playing the game unbearable in my opinion. Apart from that fool, the other characters are pretty much from your standard JRPG moulds, which means none too interesting. Storyline and dialogue are pretty standard too, with the same implication. The combat mechanics and leveling up options are what save the day, but you'll have to go through your usual grind and unspectacular and repetitive dungeon crawls, so even the interesting combat becomes a chore eventually. I haven't played a JRPG this gen that I really liked yet (Lost Odyssey is the best so far), and this one is pretty much standard.

LeonSKennedy4Life3398d ago

That's not even cool!

I can understand taking away for the lackluster storyline, but the gameplay is actually a bit refreshing.

What gives, Canada?

"What gives, Canada?"

I assume you're talking to me? I didn't write this.Just submitted it.
