Why Can't We All Just Have One Console?

SCRAWL's Sal writes "Imagine a world where three companies weren't competing in a console war, where profits were shared and where you could play Mario, Halo, and God of War on one system. Imagine a world without fanboys, but a world full of fans of games. That's a world with one console."

Because monopolies are evil and competition is good. What? Are we commies now?

chrisnick3460d ago

cuz then if it was missing something hardware wise we'd all be screwed... whereas now if my console can't do something, i know i chose the wrong one...its why there's competition, its why we have fanboys, its why this console gen has been the best so far.

Imagine....a monopoly.

FAIL

if there's one console.....we'll be paying $1000 for it and 50 a month for online....why? cuz we have no other choice, they will know that...and capitalize on it. (i was exaggerrating by the way)

trying to gear up everyone to accept the new world order eh?

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3460d ago

One console would suck...
Besides, console wars are fun things to watch. (not fanboy wars though)

Competition is the central driving force in the industry. It makes companies innovate to get your money and prevents them from resting on their laurels. If there was only one console, games would become much more stagnant and dreary, at least I assume they would. Although, looking at it a different way, developers would be competing with each other to get at your money so there'd be competition either way. There simply is no way to have a unified console without SOME form of competition, unless that is, the maker of the console is the only one making games for said system. Or perhaps, one licensed developer.

Sony were getting all comfy with their PS2 being the sole console when Microsoft decided to join the party. 4 billion dollars later, we have Xbox Live, FPSs, and western RPGs.

ZuperAmazingCooKie3460d ago

Halo fanboys, mario fanboys, god of war fanboys, you name it

JsonHenry3459d ago

We do have one console available. It is always evolving. It is royalty free(per game sold), it is a wide open format. It is in most peoples home.

It is called the PC.

yah one console and no worries... goes to show capitalism can bite you in the ass sometimes..... didnt i hear apple joining in the console race? anyways one console world is like lord of the ring's middle earth ... fiction! never gonna happen

Shroom3460d ago (Edited 3460d ago )

how about a set of standards for all consoles that could enable cross-platform gaming in multiplayer? For multi-plats anyway

dragunrising3460d ago

I like that idea! If consoles were cross compatible the console wars could be decided easily. I couldn't support one console. I would be far too expensive. Competition is what keeps the prices low. Not only would the console be expensive but the cost of software would go up as well. Last but not least, I want a console I'm able to import all of my achievements and trophies.

FrankenLife3460d ago

@ Shroom

That would be great. I would love to play with people on different consoles. However MS would have to really change how XBL works. Right now they have the enormous XBL servers of which everyone uses to play PVP regardless of the game. There are no dedicated servers for the games. PSN is client server where users connect to servers that the game publishers contract with. While the systems process the data differently they could be made to send and receive a standardized form of data. But MS would have to allow the users to connect to outside servers, and I don't they would let that happen.

UltimateIdiot9113460d ago

I've been talking about that idea for a while with friends. It would lead to the best epic online play ever. Fanboy wars would be truly virtual.

Shroom3460d ago

in a limited sort of way. FF XI is cross platform online:
PC-PS2-Xbox360. It would most likely fall on the makers of the games to implement such an idea for gameplay.
I'm no programmer, but seeing as it has already been done, why not?

ANOTHER articel on the same subject. We all know why there shouldn't be just one console. No need to go through it all again...
