Following the release of its record financial results yesterday. GameStop has revealed that consumers seem to still be happy with the USD $59.99 price point of triple A titles in the US.
People aren't "happy" with it. Good journalism though.
but its not stoppping me from buying games let alone in the past month and a half I've bought 5 games at $60 bucks each Killzone2 Resident Evil 5 Wanted weapons of fate Street Fighter 4 Dead Space
and that is why I'm not happy. Lucky Americans.....
So is every game a AAA game? Here in Europe the starting price is almost allways at 60 euros (79.7 USD), and trust me not all of them are AAA. You know how happy I would be if games where at 60 USD! It would be something like 45 euros!!! You hear people complaining how many buy second hand games, and how bad it is for the industry. If you lowerd your prices I would gladly buy a lot more new games but at 80 USD a game, it's a bit exagerated. An example: monster vs aliens (game of a new animation movie, wich will most certainly be crap) is at 58 Euros!! which is about 77 USD. Are you f*** kidding me. A game derived from an animation movie costing so much?? If that is not ripping off the customer... Once again lower your prices, and I'll most certainly buy more games, and more of them would be new instead of second hand edit: I know this has nothing to do with the US or the article, but I felt like expressing myself lol
This generation has taught me to be MUCH more selective with my spending. I've blown $70 + tax on so many over-hyped titles this gen, particularly multi-plats, that I'm on a "rental only" policy unless it's a JRPG or sweet looking system exclusive. @ Hi-def freak. I'll give you Killzone 2 and Dead Space, but the rest of your list, most notably "Wanted: WOF" just seem like a waste of cash. In my opinion, Capcom make highly polished, though altogether average games. They are the gaming equivalent of Transformers or any other summer blockbuster - entertaining, but shallow. They haven't released a title this gen that I've seen that's worth plunking down 80 bucks for.
when it received a price drop in December. It's $10 cheaper than other games. I thank EA for that. They are the only company to drop the price of their games so fast and so frequently. Quality games too: Burnout ($20), Mirror's Edge, Battlefield, Army of Two, Red Alert 3 and tons of others.
did gamestop just tell me what im happy with. isnt that for me to decide?
@Steviek08 What are you talking about games in the UK are cheaper than the US, considering you can pick up new games for £34.99 ($50) on launch now (and more often that not for 30quid ($43)) i don't see what you are moaning at. Even if you buy from the expensive places you still only paying $57. Not to mention the fact that our price is with Tax included and in the US they get Tax added on after. However in France and Germany games are more expensive.
More like begrudgingly accepting, I'd say. No one's "happy" that things cost $60 when they could cost $40.
How does the whole PAL thing factor in?
I've noticed that I'm buying games in higher frequency than I had been with the PS2, even with the higher price. I find that funny, given the economic climate and (terrible) pricing of games. But hey, more games are more games, and as long as I'm happy with the games, I won't complain about the price.
I don't think Gamestop knows what "The customer is always right" means because a lot of my friends and I included, don't like the $59.99 price tag ($69.99 in CAN). :/
you can usually get a deal if you are patient and keep an eye out for them. I got Valkyria Chronicles for $45 a week after release, got Killzone 2 and Street fighter IV for $80 together. Thats how I will probably be buying the rest of my games this gen unless there is some pre-order bonus that I really want.
"I've noticed that I'm buying games in higher frequency than I had been with the PS2, even with the higher price. I find that funny, given the economic climate and (terrible) pricing of games. But hey, more games are more games, and as long as I'm happy with the games, I won't complain about the price." Agreed. In the PS2 generation, I probably have about 20 games in the span of 8 years! So far with the PS3/360, I'm nearing the 65+ mark with exclusives and multiplats. I've never had so many games in my life til now.
Being from canada I'm not liking Eb/Gamestops price points. I've been trying to figure out how KZ2 is selling for 59.99 up here and 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is 69.99.... it's mind blasting
$65(with tax) isnt cheap. I am not happy with the prices.
Seem's to be the UK's selling threshhold.
They are not happy, they pretty much dont have a choice( unless they wait for a price drop)
Uncharted, Lair and Heavenly Sword are still 59.99... I mean come on, give us a break.
i'm not happy with the prices, and the prices have actually amde be more scrutinizing of the titles i buy this gen i have bought far far less games than i had in the passed for my 360 i've bought maybe a total of 20 games over the 2 years i've had it, as opposed to the 150+ i bought for ps1 and the 100+ i bought for ps2 40-50 dollars i much more easy to swallow than 60 as of late i've been buying games from the bargain bins, buying arcades games and just waiting on new releases unless it is something i really want i probably won't buy anything on release until modern warfare 2
Bull Sh!T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! ! Hey Xbox360, PS3 lets unite against Game Stop B.S. lets use the alternative media to demand lower the price of video games but not only the retailers also Sony and Microsoft !!!!! Complain everywhere you go on the web !!!! Post everywhere even with labels on street --->>> ( +GamingFOR-$NOW ) Who say YES?!?!?!?
Games should be @ $49.99 no more, $10 hike this gen is totaly uncalled for! Maybe onlive will put some stress on the big two, I only say two because Ninty is @ $49.99 sweet-spot, and bring the price for PS3 and 360 down. I've spent a fortune on next gen games and decided because of our current ecconomic hardships to join with gamefly to game with non must buy AAA exclusives and keep me busy till we get another influx of must haves!
are $69.99 in Canada right now, supposedly due to the drop in value of the Canadian dollar. I refuse to pay such a price even though games are my passion. Too bad, since I planned on getting Chronicles of Riddick next. I'll wait until June, maybe then, I might drop some cash on Infamous, but until then, big no no.
Game "Ripoff" Stop said this? $59.99 = Less games for me to buy. $39.99 - $49.99 = More games for me to buy.
The only games that I buy at full price of $60 bucks for the most part are almost always exclusives that I'm really looking forward too... I've only bought a small handful of 3rd party games at full price like Dead Space when it first came out, Fallout 3, and GTA4 I wouldn't say that I'm "happy" about the prices, but I think Exclusives to one console are the only games that should be sold at $59.99, and ALL 3rd party games released on multiple platforms should be $40-45 maximum upon release. Even though the prices of games are higher, I still buy about the same amount of games yearly this gen. that I bought last gen. The last game I bought was Killzone 2 in Feb. and except for the Offroad racing game FUEL, I probably won't buy another PS3 game until InFamous because there's just nothing else new coming out between that time I think is worth paying $60 bucks for.
Games cost a bit much imo, but I remember paying a lot more back in the 16bit days. Toejam & Earl cost me $113 after tax. I'll never forget that one.
are you serious? I paid that much for my genesis.
I'm quite serious. I remember it well. $113 at Zellers (which is like a Canadian Wal-Mart). My Genesis cost around $300 I think. Got it pretty close to launch. These are Canadian prices I'm quoting, of course. I remember X-men ran me in the $90 range after taxes as well.
The $60 standard is stupid. There are some games that deserve to be sold for no more than $20 yet are still sold for the set standard, just because they are new. Yes, some games are worth $60 and I'm happy paying that, but the majority of games are not.
"Tolerate "is more the word I'm thinking. I'd probably buy twice the amount of games if they were 40 bucks. serious. I dont think twice @ 40 bucks, but 60? I hear that nagging voice of my wife in my brain....lol @harry190 $70 canadian is $56.44 in us currency as of march 28 2009. Good deal for you , eh?
The level of income for a middle-class Canadian is about the same as that of an American living in the United States. Since there has been no increase in the level of income, you feel the sting. If I had US dollars, then it would be irrelevant, but as of right now, paying $70 ( without taxes btw, with taxes add 13 %) for a game is ridiculous.
I didn't know that. But hey, at least you get free healthcare, right? (probably why your taxed @ 13% imo) j/k :)
I would gladly pay 60 bucks for good games.
Naughty Dog Insomniac Team ICO Hideo Kojima Any game from one these devs is an instant day 1 purchase. Dropping the $60 standard would open my wallet up to lots of other games though.
did gamestop ask? next gen games are too expensive. 49.99 is the game price sweet spot. Gamestop just wants to make money off of traded-in games. if the original price is high, the used price will also be higher.
59.99$ ? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU a lot of games seems to be at 69.99$ in quebec city now... and i guess in canada. Title like Call Of Duty 4 is now 69.99$ I paid my resident evil 4 69.99$ too. That begin to be expensive for a 6h games. here is a link that prove it : http://www.futureshop.ca/ca...
I definitely dont buy all the games I'd like to, I've noticed that lately I've been more optimistic about throwing 60 bones + tax down on a game. I pretty much get the games I know I gotta have ie: KZ2, RE5, ect. Though it could be worse...I recall paying $70 for N64 games.
and Most N64 games were crap and fcking expensive
Yah I fracking think and always have that 65 after tax for a game is too damn expensive. I have always thought 49.99 plus tax was pushing it. Maybe if they would keep the prices lower then less people would pirate, not many but some would. I know I would buy more games if they was 49.99 or less.
AAA games are worth the $60, considering how expensive it is to develop this days. But then again, there are some games that are not worth the $60 tag, should launch @ $40 (dream on) Edit @Sarcasm That game did so bad, i still wonder if it was released at all. Only the commercials made me notice that game. Ouch
Didn't Bangjo Kazooie launch at $40? Yet it still sold like crap. The fact is, people are willing to pay $60 for good games. It's those "crappy" games that don't need to be launched at full price.
I'm sure they would say something like that! XD And when you trade that ''AAA game'' back a week later you'll be lucky if ya get 12$ for it.
They tell us that we are happy paying $60+Tax. When they wont pay more than $20(usually less), then they turn around and sell it for $55. WTF?!
yea ok gamestop, right...
I was happy about paying 4 bucks for a gallon of gas also. lol I buy very few games for this gen. of consoles. I bought many more, when games where 50 bucks and there was always a 10 buck coupon somewhere or when CC had new releases less than retail. psst..use the BB monthly gamming pass....check your game library and look at all the SP games which are dust collectors...
Wow a lot of Gamestop hate. I must live near all the good Gamestops. But i do think thats a stupid statement. I would love a better price point. Bluray is still expensive too. @ Sarevok, I traded in Silent hill Homecoming and got $28 for it. And that was a month after purchase. I think i got $22 for Gh world tour too. I think thats more than fair. lol once I was in a small game store that sold old games, and seen the first Mgs for ps1 for $58. I asked him why it was so high, and he said he based his prices off how much he thought it was worth. Too bad no one told him you can get Mgs1,2,and 3 in a pack for $30 Also FF7 was like 60 bucks as well. Oh well thank God for ps1 emulation on my pc. plays ps1 isos like a pro.
People see the price tag and are more than willing to pay for it, even if a game is complete dogsh1t.
Prices in the UK are a lot less fixed :) i love shopto.net Motorstorm 2, Tombraider, Gears 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet where all like £19.99 within a week or so of there release To you that would be like $29.99
Before they start to lower the prices. EA is one of the best examples of this. Even though I can't stand most of their games (Madden, Live, and a few others), you cannot deny that they sell well. And when EA sells a certain amount they start to lower prices. EA has some great games like Burnout Paradise and Dead Space, but there is a whole crowd of people somewhere who come as mindless droves and get the same Madden and same Live every year, and those games drop price real quick like. On another note, F.U. Gamestop, prices of games are way too high. If I didn't have to pay so much for a game that could very well end up being a turd, I could buy more games and feel better about getting the occasional turd. Until the prices drop, I use gamefly. No matter which way you look at it, Gamefly is by far the cheapest way to play all the games you want. If you do the math, I typically bought 1-2 games a month depending on how much money I had and if they were good or not. That would run me 100-200 dollars depending if it was a special edition or whatnot. Now times twelve months that is 1200-2400 dollars. In comparison Gamefly costs me a little over 20 bucks a month for a two game plan. Times that by twelve and that is only about 300 dollars a year.
this is one of the reasons why i just had my 360 flashed, the 60 dollar price tag between 2 systems is a bit much. Imma start "borrowing" the single player games only stick to purchasing Multiplayer titles. 60 bucks is becoming a bit much, now for every game i dont buy i can put the money in to my IRA woot!
i liked it better when it was 50$ a game :((
*hint* I don't buy games.
I don't and won't pay $60 for a new title. I simply won't do it. I haven't EVER and I've played most of the very recent releases. Gamestop often runs buy 2 get 1 free on used. $60 new are 55 used and with an edge card are 50 used. I then get 1 free so I end up paying $33 each for the three titles. Either that or I'll use Goozex and trade for something else. The transaction nets me about $3 per title -- cheaper than a rental -- and I keep the game. Drop the price and I'll buy new. I don't think saying people are "happy" is the right approach, here, gamestop. It's more like, "the pain point for many shoppers seems to be over $60".
Just because we are buying AAA games at $59.99 doesn't mean we are happy with the price, rather we are forced to pay $59.99 to get the title we want at release.
