IGN: GDC 09: Why Are Valve's Games So Polished?

Mike Ambinder, PhD, experimental psychologist for Valve, was at the Game Developer Conference 2009 to give a talk about the best ways to go about testing games. For Valve and Ambinder, the goal is to create a fun game, and everything else is secondary. The first step of the process is coming up with a concept that might make for a fun game, such as hopping through portals, and then putting those ideas to the test.

JA JA JA.....:)

Is Half life 2 on Ps3 polished? What kind of joke is this?

Be serious man.

Jamegohanssj53220d ago

Valve's games are UNpolished and bland, I never understood everyones obsession with Valve, gameplay is the epitomy of standard, and the graphics are mediocre at best.

Daz3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

value game are good and fun. thats why i play them because i dont get board of them.

manwich253220d ago

there talking about the real games that valve makes

"Half life 2 on the PS3 was made by EA"

Half-Life 2 on the PS3 was published by EA not developed. It was just a port included in the Orange Box.

thewhoopimen3219d ago

Valves games prior to halflife 2 are extremely polished. valve games afterwards? ehh... not so much. Left4dead is fun... but it looks like a half-life2 mod, it's story is nonexistant, and it's far more repetitive than Valve's previous games.

SIdepocket3219d ago

@Eiffel

EA ported Source and the Orange Box. Valve doesn't develop on the PS3

Bnet3433219d ago (Edited 3219d ago )

lol no one who commented here knows anything about Valve. Please you bring up HL2 on PS3. Ha ha you'd be dumb to even play HL2 on a console, let alone b*tch about it.

@BrotherNick

You should always agree with what I say all time. I don't mean to sound like a douche, but when people argue with what I say, I never see anything wrong. If I am wrong I'll never be afraid to admit I am wrong. If I get disagrees and no one responds directly to me, that's when I know I'm right and that's why 99% of the time I don't even bother to look who agrees or disagrees, I just look for people to comment to me directly.

BrotherNick3219d ago

Kigmal, finally something I agree with you about lol.

Since when did people start hating valve?

I've been playing Half Life 2 again on my 360 since my PS3 broke and it's still almost perfect as the first time I played it (only thing I noticed is ravenholm isn't as scary as it used to be)

Do people hate valve now because valve hates consoles?

Bnet3433219d ago

No one hates Valve but fanboys at N4G. That's the honest to god truth. If you hate Valve you have some serious issues with yourself.

"Do people hate valve now because valve hates consoles? "

No i think people started to hate Valve because of the fatso running it use to bash the ps3..

Personally i like their games, fun and run fine on low-specs PC .

Not bashing, but since Half Life 2, when has a Valve game ever been truly "polished"? Portal was a non-Valve idea brought to them by some college students.

I think Left 4 Dead is a perfect example of Valve's so-called dedication to polish and quality....at this point, they're almost the FPS version of Square-Enix, trying to sell on name alone instead of quality.

kwyjibo3219d ago

Team Fortress 2 is incredibly polished.

Portal was a very easy game to polish anyway given its relative simplicity, but there is still a massive gulf between Portal and Narbacular Drop.

Disccordia3219d ago

Maybe it's because they only release a real game every ten years and everything else is just stuff from the modding community.

HL2 still looks better than some games being released today. That's testament to how beautiful it was in 2004.

kenjix3219d ago

I played Half Life on my PC and that engine was good then but now it's dated, try and wow me valve then maybe you can buy a vowel from the word polished ok?

TheIneffableBob3219d ago

No **** it's dated. It was made in 1998. You can't expect an engine to stay current after 11 years... unless that engine is Quake 3.

AllseeingEye3219d ago

I dont consider waiting a full minute for the next segment of a map to load, polished. (Halflife 2) FPS's with mediocre graphics are not my thing. They have some story telling skills though.

iceice1233219d ago

That's EA's fault not Valve. EA took the helm for the inferior ps3 version. Valve's polish/quality is second best, second to only Blizzard.

TABSF3219d ago

yeah EA ported it not valve i know also EA had nothing to do with the PC orange box or left 4 dead just consoles, btw i have orange box on ps3 and PC, the loading screen in between area is less than 1 second on PC just show you how sh!t consoles are because the 360 take just as long as the ps3
