GDC: Where World of Warcraft Messed Up

With over 11.5 million subscribers worldwide, Blizzard's World of Warcraft is perhaps gamings' biggest success story today.

But it's not perfect.

Blizzard lead designer Jeffrey Kaplan, who was director on WoW and is currently working on an unannounced Blizzard MMO, described mistakes in WoW that Blizzard hopes to fix. In his GDC session titled, "Directed Gameplay Within World of Warcraft," he recounted the mistakes in WoW, specifically related to quest design.

quest wasn't fun, there was always one page that you could never get and had to trade for it. when i got to that point no one was doing that quest anymore and i was stuck on it for weeks.

dice rolling is for dial up and Japanese RPGs.

we don't need this crit, hit, miss, whatever anymore.

i want my combat to be in real time.

i'm sick of getting into raids and someone saying "i read on wowhead this is how you do this fight." F*CK THAT! I want to figure it out on the fly and have multiple ways of accomplishing the goal.
