What is the problem with cell-shading?

Matthew Vice from Lazygamer writes "Cell-shading is a rendering technique used by game developers to give their games a stylized, cartoony look. This interesting visual style has been in use since the dawn of the last generation of consoles, and it's produced some of the best-looking games on the market in recent years. Unfortunately, it also bears an unjust stigma with a large portion of the worldwide gaming community."

True my favourites are Okami and Prince of Persia.

sunnygrg3548d ago

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is probably THE best looking cel shaded title.

The Sly Cooper franchise. Those games were awesome

ThanatosDMC3548d ago

Nothing's wrong with it if anyone played DBZ: Burst Limit and played and saw SS Goku (battle damaged) vs Frieza on that level... that was like WOW!

It looks better when you actually play on your HDTV.

Agreed -- I was just going to point out XIII, a game that I'm shocked was missing from that article.

Absolutely loved that game. Was hoping for a sequel.

(Did you catch the made-for-tv movie "XIII"? It wasn't bad at all.)

I can say the problem with cel shading was that when it became popular...every game had to be using it. It was like the days of FMV. When that came out every game and it's brother was using some form of FMV.

I think cell shading is nice in the right amount. There does not have to be 20+ games all being released at the same time using the damn technique.

Ok..maybe there werent that many at the same time but you get what I am saying.

There's nothing wrong with cel-shading, it often gives a game an artistic style which realist-style gamers seem to b!tch and moan about. Some of my favourite games are cel-shaded like Okami. Truly a beautiful game if ever I've seen one.

What I dislike form cel shading is that it always has this unrealistic motion, some kind of warped 60 frames per second mixed with this unnatural motion. Mostly seen in anime based games. However In Prince Of persia, the graphics are insane, they are so much realistic it's so cool, maybe because there's a "dirt effect" in the visuals plus there's the infamous black line as opposed to certain games. However, Valkyria Chronicles' graphics are so crazy, with that paint effect, you actually see brushes on textures, both beautiful games.

However I have yet to see a true Cell-shaded game that, PERFECTLY proves itself as a testament to animes or mangas.

You can see a kinda perfect cellshading in the Cyberconnect 2 naruto games on ps2 and ps3 . Basically they are one of the very few that do more than just adding a stupid black pen line around the characters (wich i find ugly in most cases) .

Those naruto games actually do more that just the damn black line , you can see inking along a few other pencil effects , that would remind you of manga and animes . Hell the ps3 version in the end , manage to look even prettier than the anime (because half of it is badly done fillers) .

Other than that i'll agree that stuff like Valkyria chronicles , wind waker , and ookami are pieces of art .

But most of the time , cellshading is a cheap cop out and effect

You haven't seen Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm.

No FanS Land3548d ago

I've seen ultimate ninja storm, pretty good graphics yes, but it still doesn't have that "it" effect like a true anime. Ok maybe I'm being too much Kojimaesque over cel-shaded quality.

Baka-akaB3547d ago

to each their opinion , and i'm actually that obsessed over it , badly done cellshading always pisses me off . And imo ultimate ninja storm is one of those perfect use of cellshading effects .

Cel-shading is the proof that graphics does not mean exclusively photorealism, but also artistic touch. That is also why Team Fortress 2 is my fav game from Valve. With cel-shading, a game is no longer realistic so developers have to play with artistic features.

Valkyria Chronicles, Prince Of Persia or Okami are a proof of it, and many popular (in the term of criticism) games are cel-shaded: Fear Effect, Jet Set/Grind Radio, Crackdown, etc...

Capt CHAOS3548d ago

Damn good game that! And it'd just not be the same without cell shading.

sulack3548d ago

TF2 wasnt cell shaded. Valve just used different lighting techniques.

Microsoft Xbox 3603548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

I want more cell-shaded games. They are excellent looking games in my opinion. The new DBZ games were spectacular in that area but the game itself was severely mediocre. This cell-shaded art style has so much more potential it should be used more often but not just in typical fighting games, anime games, and such.

GiantEnemyFlop3548d ago

isn't street fighter cell-shaded game ?
