PSP Set to Dominate DS in 2009?

Split-screen.com writes: "Around 2008-end, we were faced with the initial 2009 line-up for Sony's Playstation Portable and a wide array of disquieting hentai doujin. Needless to say, we found the latter more appealing; forget abandoning our DS hardware to play "Money Grows on Trees When You're a Gamer" with Sony. However, after some more revelations, scouting the year-round release schedule and just plain comparing franchises and titles, the PSP is suddenly looking extremely – dare we say it? – 'gameable'."

just by looking at the upcoming games it is easy to tell the psp has the DS well beat, with games like motorstorm, resistance and lbp the DS has no answer.

SpoonyRedMage3429d ago

Well it depends is this worldwide or America or Europe? Because DQIX's coming to Japan this year.

Bnet3433429d ago

Resistance on PSP? Ha! When I see the Resistance Retribution articles on N4G, their usually like 10 comments with little hype. No one cares about that game. Sorry but your not going to convince me that the PSP will beat the DS in any year. The DS pumps out good game after good game. Pokemon Platinum is coming out next month in NA and that sells like hotcakes anywhere. Plus, recently they released the new Fire Emblem game which I'm totally diggin' right now, a new DQ game called the brides maid or something like that, and Blue Dragon Plus. Trust me man, there are AAA DS exclusives people here don't even know about.

SpoonyRedMage3429d ago

Ha real gamers? Fanboys aren't real gamers.:P no offence to any PSP owners that aren't complete idiots.

Here's a quick list of some games that are looking good for the DS this year:
My World, My Way
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Dragon Quest V
Blue Dragon Plus
Legacy of Ys: Books I & II
Peggle: Dual Shot
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Suikoden: Tierkreis
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Pokémon Platinum
FFCC: Echoes of Time
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
De Blob
Mario & Luigi RPG 3
Dragon Quest IX
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

The DS is the handheld equivelant to the Wii. Even though the other consoles have better games on them, they don't have the mass, family appeal that the DS and Wii have. The PSP probably already has plenty of better games than the DS, it's certainly got a higher average quality, but the DS isn't going away any time soon at all.

Silellak3429d ago (Edited 3429d ago )

I don't think it's fair to compare the DS to the Wii.

While they both have casual appeal, the DS has far more games that appeal to the "hardcore" segment. I own both a PSP and DS, and sadly, my PSP has not really been touched since I got a DS. I loved Jeanne D'Arc and God of War, but I haven't found all that much else to draw me in.

On the other hand, The World Ends with You and Elite Beat Agents are both two of my favorite games ever, and are very-much made for "real gamers". To claim the PSP if for "real gamers" and the DS is not, as some have tried to do, are simply fanboys making facetious claims because they refuse to see beyond Sony.

@Below:

Seriously, at what point did spamming a list of unreleased games become a substitute for actual arguments? I see it from all sorts of fanboys, and really, it's old. We're trying to have a discussion, not see who can copy and paste the most game titles into their comment box.

Guess what: NO ONE KNOWS how good unreleased games will be. Saying "Assassin's Creed is coming to the PSP!" is great and all, but who knows if it will be any *good*? Especially with the gaming media hyping *everything* to death these days.

Da One3429d ago

Assassin's Creed
Class of Heroes
Crimson Gem Saga
Disgaea: Dark Hero Days
Dynasty Warriors: Strike Force
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +
Hammerin Hero

MLB 09: The Show
Monster Freedom Unite
Motor Storm: Arctic Edge

I think i got you beat on the quality and quantity tip................

EvilCackle3429d ago

Grats, you spammed more titles than he did.

SpoonyRedMage3429d ago (Edited 3429d ago )

Well there's a lot I didn't mention but keep in mind I'm from Europe so some of these may already be out:
Disgaea DS
Rhapsody DS
The Dark Spire
Steal Princess
Guitar Hero on Tour: Modern Hits
Tokyo Beatdown
Knights in the Nightmare
Megaman Star Force 3 Black Ace/Red Joker(two seperate games)
Overlord Minions
Phantasy Star Zero
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templar (Director's cut)
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Gauntlet
Chrono Trigger

The first list was a list of games I'm looking forward to, not all the games here are ones I'm looking forward to.

EDIT: Sorry for spamming you guys with another list, the first one as I said was the games I was looking forward to.

GCNSeanFoster3429d ago

wow... no good DS games in sight in 2009??? Reality check fanboys... The PSP will never dominate the DS, especially here in the US.. Also there is the DSi coming out, which every child in the US will want to own in 2009. Laughable article that hold no water... wishful thinking for people who still believe the PSP will make a huge comeback...

Da One3429d ago

I think your one of the few that did

SpoonyRedMage made a list
I made a better list
Then he made a list of EU release

seeing how i don't live out there i need not make one, I'd like to live out there on a side note though

SpoonyRedMage3429d ago (Edited 3429d ago )

They're not all EU releases, I think may be four of them are. I think CT was out in the US last year.

Plus there's a lot of games that will undoubtedly be highly rated for the DS but won't appeal to us(meaning me). Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics is probably the best example of this.

Anyway it looks like there's an awesome list of games for both handhelds(a lot of them are Atlus' as well:S).

But I don't like the perception that the DS only has casual games, it has loads of hardcore games, a list comparable to the PSPs.

@V: I do plan on getting a PSP eventually, especially for games like Dissidia and Persona and that. The DS has a LOT of RPGs, perhaps too many and there's still loads to come.

Da One3429d ago

I can no longer take not having the RPG's over there so i gotta have both................

I would advise everyone to get both

FarEastOrient3429d ago

Kotaku said that this 2009 is PSP year too? They must know something about the software coming out and this thing called PSP-4000 ^_^

It definitely is a good year for the PSP but with all these rumors from even major gaming sites and developers saying the PSP 2 is coming this year, what if development of said titles is shifted?

E3 09: "This is a great year for the PSP, with titles like LittleBigPlanet, Altairs Chronicles, etc we are positive sales will increase. Guess what? These games won't be coming to the PSP, they'll be coming to the PSP 2! (pulls it out of his pocket).

It could happen?

Kain813429d ago

than you will see the hole psp and psone libarary as download content for psp2

Da One3429d ago

cause there still would be hell of great games for the PSP

EvilCackle3429d ago

Comparing January 2008 and January 2009, PSP sales were down 25% and DS sales were up 99%. The DS also has a lead of about 50 million units sold.

But whatev.

shocky163429d ago

ROFL. Good luck with that, PSP hasn't got a chance in hell of getting DS sales numbers.

Mindboggle3429d ago

Does it need to ? I see this like the PS3 and Wii. 2 different consoles, different age groups, functionality, games they are completeley different, and both can co-exist easily, just the PS3 and Wii, and dont need to outdo each other in sales.

EvilCackle3429d ago

No, it doesn't need to beat the DS to do well. But that's the bizarre match-up that this editorial's making.

Silellak3429d ago

As I said above - comparing the DS to the Wii just because they both have some casual appeal is unfair.

Nintendo and other companies have done a far, far better job of bringing hardcore games to the DS than they have to the Wii.

n4f3429d ago

@Silellak yes cause they are using the same strategy. just look at the ds lunch title.full of [email protected] now more awesome title. same with the wii full of shovelware look at 2009 better game with some that are AAA( monster hunter 3)
