Is Sony Playing Catch Up, or Is Microsoft?

"We have seen what the PlayStation 3 is capable of and what the future holds for it. Microsoft on the other hand sees Sony is a position where they are striving to catch up to the Xbox 360 in sales and features. Microsoft is taking advantage of that situation and continues to stay a step ahead of Sony in their online division. This is Sony's first year of having an online service and even though they may be amateurs, they are doing a great job with keeping up with Microsoft's Xbox Live, but fall short of matching it."

In terms of the PS3 vs 360, sony is playing catch up - hard to deny that.

In terms of the games industry, sony is in a much higher position than microsoft at the moment.

SupaPlaya3496d ago

the first comment. Not some 1 sided fanboy rant! Something for a change.

Bubble.

no_more_trolling3496d ago

sony has been in the industry way longer before MS. so its impressive that MS has a good chunk of marketshare in the industry.

Monchichi0253496d ago

"Competition brings innovation!" I'm glad that we have these guys battling each other because it will only bring better results for us as gamers!!!

no_more_trolling3496d ago

true. but i guess some guys would love to see a one console industry. fan loyalty is one thing, but wishing the xbox 360 would die is just stupid

edgeofblade3496d ago

I tend to agree with Deathrow. Microsoft is trying really hard and investing a lot of money to improve their foothold. We haven't seen the depth of their capability, which could be fathoms deeper or just a few inches shallow.

But we know Sony is experienced and has been in both a dominant and bottom of the pile position. These positions are reflected in their online services, their third-party strategies, and their system architecture.

But I'm not about to predict what will happen. I won't count any of them out. Just think if Sony had decided to stick with DVD, or Microsoft designed their way past the RROD the first time. I just pray that the future doesn't hinge on fanboys to drive everything. If that's the case, Nintendo is going to change the market landscape forever... and then it will be too late to save gaming as we know it.

WildArmed3496d ago

The real question is:
WHAT CAME FIRST?
THE Chicken(female) or the EGG?

D-Deuces3496d ago

Developers wouldn't bother tapping into the potential of the consoles and then we'd get games spewed out with EA's quality, or games like Dynasty Warriors 68. The only thing I don't like is how some multiplatform games (Like DMC4) seem a bit watered down and you feel it could have been much better if done on one system (Like NG).

slayorofgods3496d ago

Did you get hit in the head by a Playstation when you were a kid? You seem to be tormented by Sony.

slayorofgods3496d ago

I agree completely. Although Sony has catching up to do they are definitely bringing on the fight making this generation one of the biggest console wars I've ever seen. The 360 and PS3 are evenly matched in a lot of respects.

UltimaEnder3495d ago

Great another stupid fanboy article used as flaimebait by some no-name website, what a surprise here on N4G!

Microsoft needs to improve first party games on the 360 but every other corner, the PS3 is still flagging behind.

LastDance3496d ago

especially reliability.

SupaPlaya3496d ago

you mean like in Japan?

Johnny Rotten3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

Lets not forget that Microsoft didn't put out a model with an HDMI input for well over a year and a half (I'm on my forth system and still don't have one).

Don't forget that until just recently the Xbox wouldn't allow you to copy any music from an external device onto your hard drive. Sony's been doing it from day 1 in fact they're still ahead because you can copy from any device that's on your network, not just the ones plugged into the system.

Don't forget about the DRM issues that took 2 years to fix, (if you weren't connected to the internet your stuck with the demo version of your arcade games), Sony had this covered on day one with thier "game sharing".

Sony's accounts have yet to expire on the user, Microsoft is currently working on a way to fix the whole Net ID debacle.

And best of all... Why doesn't the Xbox have a fast forward/rewind for the music player?

edgeofblade3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

Reliability first. If the RROD never happened, Microsoft wouldn't be battling with Sony... they would be tangling with Nintendo right now. Sony should thank their lucky stars they got that break.

I honestly don't think the 360 first party and exclusives are lagging that far behind. Of course, liking Halo goes a long way, but they are making fun games. It's hard to balk at that. But the way they tied up exclusives and forced other exclusives to go multi-platform has given MS a pretty cushy advantage.

@Johnny: You're missing the forest for the trees. Those are some of the most token issues to bring up. Yes, they are valid issues, but they are also constrained by Microsoft policy and contractual obligations.

Johnny Rotten3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

@ blade: these are just the issues/differences that as a owner of both systems I have noticed and experienced first hand, Sony is no better and I would've said something similar if the original post was the other way around. Sales and "the best games" don't phase me none because I'm a happy owner of both systems and always will be.

I do agree that if the Xbox hardware was reliable from the beginning Sony would be in a way worse position than they are in now, this is what makes competition a good thing!

na2ru13496d ago

And why does playing a demo stop when I open the disc tray? The visualizers are eye soring. Im surprised no1 complained of epilepsy.

cayal3496d ago

"Reliability first. If the RROD never happened, Microsoft wouldn't be battling with Sony... they would be tangling with Nintendo right now. Sony should thank their lucky stars they got that break."

And one could argue Microsoft have a million or more consoles sold because people have had to buy another because of RROD.

You have nothing to substanciate that claim, and frankly, it's not even close to being right.

sonysuks3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

RROD HAS BEEN FIXED WITH THE JASPER CHIP, ALSO ALL XBOX 360 THAT RROD WHERE RETURNED WITH NO PROBLEM. I WORK AT WAL-MART AS MY OTHER PART TIME JOB AND IF YOU BRING A XBOX 360 IN RECEIPT OR NOT YOU GOT A NEW XBOX 360 RIGHT THERE AND THEN. JUST TRAD OUT YOUR HARDRIVE AND THERE YOU GO, NEW XBOX. SINCE THE FIX OF THE JASPER IT CAN BE SAID THAT THE RELIABILITY IS BETTER THAN THE PS3 NOW.

LOOK AT THE PS2 PLAGUE WITH PROBLEMS, I WENT THROUGH TWO OF THEM MY SELF AND GOT SCREWED OUT OF MY MONEY THE FIRST GO AROUND.
I HAD TO BUY A WARRANTY FROM THE DAMN STORE TO GET IT FREE THE SECOND TIME.

SONY DOESN'T FIX THERE PROBLEMS WITH A GOOD WARRANTY THEY MAKE YOU BUY ANOTHER.

AND BROKEN XBOX 360 DON'T MAKE SOME ONE BUY A NEW ONE THEY GET A NEW ONE FREE OF PRICE.

TO U DOWN THERE VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV VVVVVVV

XBOX LIVE IS CONSTANTLY UPDATED FOR CHEATERS, PROBLEMS AND HAS MORE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT. THE CHARGE MONTHLY IS 3.846154 DOLLARS A MONTH IF YOU BUY A YEAR XBOX LIVE UP FRONT. THEY HAVE NET FLIX AND WAY MORE TO OFFER THEN PS3 SO I THINK PEOPLE WILL PAY THE 3 F=CKING DOLLARS.
RATHER THEN BEING A NON AMERICAN PRICK THAT BUYS JAPANESE PRODUCTS.

IaMs123496d ago

Dont forget that Sony learned from Microsofts Mistakes. Someone had to make them, and it was smart on Sony part to do so. Would you follow the same suit or improve right away, like Sony did with DRM and music and such.

cayal3496d ago

@ sonysuks - you are obviously an impartial observer in video gaming but what you wrote was the biggest load of dribble I've ever read.

as how can microsoft still charge for a service which is free on a rival system?

SupaPlaya3496d ago

because people are willing to pay. If they start losing all the subscribers then they may have incentive to make it free and make their money back else where.

Sitdown3496d ago

"how can microsoft still charge for a service which is free on a rival system"

That's an easy answer.....because it is not the same service. How can Nissan put a premium on Infinite, how can Toyota do the same with Lexus? How can a couple of movies at a theater cost about the same price as a months worth of cable? How come Road Runner can charge for DSL when you can find dial up free? The fact that PSN has not completely caught LIVE, that means there are extra functions that people feel or worth the premium........then the fact that you really have no other choice on the 360, so a lot of people just give in.

edgeofblade3496d ago

The economics of paying for Xbox Live have a similar effect to PSN gaining ground. Right now, if MS drops the ball on online play, then users stop paying for their gold memberships. MS has an incentive to keep us happy. Paying $50 a year gives gamers a lot of control Now, PSN gaining ground puts additional pressure on MS to improve. But I don't expect to see MS drop the charge any time soon.

Personally, I would like to see MS spin off the division from the rest of the company so we can see the XBL money go back to work for gamers.

MURKERR3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

if sony match live microsoft wont let sony have bragging rights.. you dont think microsoft want their customers shifting to pS3 do you? PSN matching live could be that final last straw for many 360 consumers if they still have to pay for it, common sense my friend

PSN matching live can only help 360 owners which silly me i thought everyone would want

orange-skittle3496d ago

Because you get what you pay for. Would you pay for PSN in it's current state? Xbox invests in it's online service because they forsee that as the future. The interface is unmatched by Sony because Sony started out the gate too late. It all started in 1999 w/ the Dreamcast which was powered by Windows CE. Dreamcast had a modem then when PS2 didn't have one. Then Xbox came out in 2001 with a modem and great service. Sony then followed suit with the network adapter but it was too late. Sony didn't believe that online gaming was the future as of yet. They were wrong and now they are paying for it. Why does Sony own 90% of its movies at the PS Store and we still have to pay for them? I love my 9.95 a month Netflix subscription on 360. My folder has like 10 movies in it. Sony does not have clue

sonysuks3496d ago

BUBBLES FOR YOU, VERY GOOD POINT.

If things keep going the way they have been, the two will always be "LEAP-FROGGING" each other in one or more aspects. It's only natural, each one will only try to out do the other. Good for competition.

sonysuks3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

THEY DO TRY TO OUT DO EACH OTHER WHICH IS BETTER FOR THE GAMER, SO EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIKE SONY, I WOULD BE TOTALLY PISSED IF THEY WENT UNDER. ONE, MY PRICE WOULD NEVER GO DOWN, DO TO NO COMPETITION IN THE INDUSTRY, CONPETITION GOT YOU GAMES LIKE GEARS, METAL GEAR SOLID, HALO............ ON AND ON OR BEING THAT THE GAME WAS SCRUTINISED AND PUT AGAINST A COMPONENT WHO HAS MADE THE GRAPHICS THAT MUCH BETTER OR GAME PLAY OVER THE TOP. SO I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THIS COMPETITION IS GREAT AND SHALL CONTINUE.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE APPLE GET INTO THE RACE, THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING.
NOT ENOUGH MONEY, THEY WOULD MOST LIKELY TOPPLE IF THEY MADE A MISTAKE

TO YOU GEESE
SO IF I TOOK A SH-T IN YOU HOUSE AND IT WAS FREE IT WOULD MEAN THAT IT WAS COOL AND GREAT. FREE MEANS SOMETIMES YOU GET SH-T, WHICH IS WHAT I THINK YOU HAVE.

GEESE3496d ago

And F R E E.

Great and Free. Free and Great.
People LIKE free things.
Sweet.

Sitdown3496d ago

like free things....which mean, free is not always the number one choice.

DK_Kithuni_713496d ago

PSN has improved at lot. I for one have absolutely no problems with it.

DelbertGrady3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

I think XBL is a better service than PSN. It has much more content, is more feature rich, and you don't have to wait for things to load everytime you click on something. I gladly pay for it. Crucify me.

Why do people pay $15/month to play World of Warcraft when there are lots of free alternatives? XBL isn't even $5/month and it works with all the games you own.

Sitdown3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

I am not discounting the psn's improvements.....and in my limited (playing SF IV) experience with it...I have not necessarily had any problems (even though there were the occasional disconnects) either. I am just stating...people do not always enjoy or jump on something because it is free. I tend to gravitate more to playing games on the 360 simply because of my family members and friends who own consoles....they have LIVE.

Edit: @Some-One-Plays.....I am not necessarily one of them....but in comparison to what the psn is offering...there are people who will say the same thing...that they rather pay for LIVE than have the free psn.

Time_Is_On_My_Side3496d ago

We are talking about networks not products, free isn't always the best choice if it's a product. There has been free online on the PC for years and no one complains unless it's your network. The only reason why Microsoft has a fee is because they host their own servers while everyone else has to make their own.

Remember we're talking about networks.
