Multiconsole Ownership Deters Fanboyism

Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "Being a fanboy is no easy task. One has to show utter disdain for the competition without showing the slightest interest in their games or the features of their console. Without fanboys, gaming forums would be a rather dull place full of reasonable debates and respect among the contributors. These fanboys aren't soulless robots, though and they are more than likely motivated by envy."

Owning multiple consoles, in no way, shape, or form stops stupid people from BEING stupid.

MrWeymes3459d ago

I disagree with your disagreement. Is a person who owns all 3 current generation consoles really going to call someone an Xbot, Droid or some variant of Wii-tard when they own the console they are insulting so heavily?

HDgamer3459d ago

As do I strongly disagree. Stupid ignorant vile people exist, owning all consoles doesn't mean he can't love one over the other. It's kinda like sports; you like Iron mike tyson over Ali. Although Ali is a good fighter people will find reasons to hate him(I know he's old but thats not the point)

MrWeymes3459d ago

I understand what you're both saying. Owning all 3 consoles doesn't defeat fanboyism, but it certainly helps to deter people from becoming absorbed in that blind, dedicated nature.

Chris3993459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

Owning all 3 systems (like myself), you're still bound to be more critical of some (360, 9 month owner and on my second box; JRPGs that I bought it for have been sub-par at best) and less of others (PS3/ Wii).

I concur that it defeats most of that "blind", "rabid" fanboyism mentioned above, as there is none of that 'console envy' associated with not being able to play certain titles (exclusives); nor any of that need to violently justify or defend your console of choice (as you have them all).

But people always have a preference and an opinion.

Always.

lalalala3459d ago

It does help to a certain extent, but you will always have a preference. I have a PS3 and 360, I prefer my PS3, but I still appreciate the 360, even though I have to treat it like it's on life support so it doesn't rrod

There's a difference between stupidity and ignorance. Most trolls are both (stupidity + ignorance - common sense = fanboy). Being a multi-console owner removes ignorance from the equation at least. I don't mind valid criticism as long as the person is informed. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a cure for stupidity.

@HDgamer - you didn't just say that Tyson is better than the GOAT, did you? I'll be over to bite your ear off and eat your children :)

celestialninja3458d ago

You are right! I own all 3 systems and I am stupid cause one of the three is a xbox 360, www.. JK

But once again I do own all 3 systems and enjoy them.

MrWeymes3458d ago

I own all three consoles as well, but the Xbox 360 wins today. I'm just waiting until the mall opens so I can go grab a copy of Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

The Playstation 3 wins on the 27th with Killzone 2 and the Wii wins next month with Madworld.

madpuppy3458d ago

but, people do have a preference, I own all three consoles and the only I regret buying is the Wii, I like my 360 but, I don't like the fact that I have had to replace it more than once, I really like my PS3 but, I wish that a few aspects of online play weren't so wonky like voice chat and setting up a game with your friends.

MrWeymes3458d ago

I agree with your disagreement of his disagreement. I have had good times with all three consoles. You could say that I'm a polygamist in terms of the gaming world.

-EvoAnubis-3458d ago

I agree that owning multiple consoles can help, but a stupid person is a stupid person no matter what. Some people are delusional enough to own multiple consoles to JUSTIFY their fanboyism.

HA! yea right. Mart apparently is a multi-console owner and that doesn't stop him from saying ridiculous things.

MrWeymes3459d ago

There are always exceptions. You also said "apparently", so he may say he owns other consoles just to seem unbiased. I'm not saying that's true, it's just a possibility.

solidjun53458d ago

I essentially responding to the title of the article and that was the first thing that came to mind.

kewlkat0073459d ago

but a multi-console owner is more likely to play the games 1 console owners bash on a daily basis and might have a more accurate opinion, but yeah always exceptions to the rule.

Some still bash one console even though having 2 or 3, they might be on their 9 RROD(360) to justify statements, yet continue to support such failure.

LinuxGuru3458d ago (Edited 3458d ago )

Owning multiple systems does not prevent fanboy issues.

It's like the same thing as saying owning contraceptives and condoms helps prevent pregnancy....that is, only if you use them. Purchasing is have the battle, lol.

MrWeymes3458d ago

lol, I appreciate a humorous analogy, but I disagree at the same time. As I say in the article, envy is the fuel for most fanboys. Most of the time, they don't even know much about the game they're bashing.

It's like Xbox 360 fans saying how much Metal Gear Solid 4 sucks, but when they hear that it may go multiplatform, they get all excited. That game and system is just an example. The same could go for a 360 title or Wii title going multiplatform.

creeping judas3458d ago

As a PS3 owner I thought Metal Gear was a horrible game, as a 360 owner I thought Too Human was a horrible game, as a Wii owner?? Well I only have 3 games for it and they are all good.

It's all about personal preferences.

As a tri-console owner, I want more exclusives, no more games going multi platform!!!

MrWeymes3458d ago

I should also mention that it wasn't my intention for the picture to focus on the Playstation 3 as much as it is. lol

The article picture I used is all three consoles together, but the way it shows up on n4g is like this. The possible fanboy-ism in my own picture is quite humorous to me.
