Sony to use PSP-4000 as 'Trojan horse for games'

As rumours of sliding screen on Sony's next PSP gain ground...

The latest rumours about the next model of Sony's PlayStation Portable are that the PSP-4000 is set to get a sliding front-screen.

"The rumour makes sense – Sony need a headline grabbing feature to re-launch PSP – but with no fundamental changes to the hardware or controls (especially the controls), PSP's shortcomings are the same as ever; lack of killer titles, and decent ports crippled by inability to use right analogue stick," agrees PSM3 magazine editor, Daniel Dawkins.

"If Sony re-launch on the strength of the new screen (touchscreen, we hope), re-market it as a communication device (with an established communication software link to replace the now canned, bespoke, Go! Messenger service, like Skype, or some other social networking tools) and slipstream the success of iPhone, this would not only win back jaded consumers, but allow Sony to use it as a Trojan horse for – yes – games. iPhone is doing it the other way around, but there's no doubt PSP is the superior games machine."

How long is the -1000-2000-3000-4000 going to extend? I'm sure alot of people are sick of selling their old PSPs just to get the newer version with a few minor changes.

so how long is the 360 classic, arcade, pro, elite, orginals, falcon, jaspers going to extend.... haven't you figured out that having 1 bubble means something...

That's just a concept.

I freakin' WISH that was the PSP 4000. It won't be though.

EDIT: My dear God.

So by using the phrase "trojan horse" they are basically saying its essentially a PSP but its just looks different and they are going to market it as something eles ???

Yes, I know it's just a concept. But it's a very beautiful concept...and dream !
I'd like to get a PSP like that.

But the hardware is more important.

This (old) concept pic is pretty to look at, but the thumb-stick placements are awkward if not entirely unusable. It'd be even more awkward than the fools who don't know how to hold a Dual-Shock controller properly, with both indexes and middle fingers on L1/R1 and L2/R2, except in this case the PSP would flop towards you.

I would love to see an arc-slide design like the ubersexy Xperia, but again, the lack of any screen protection kinda irks me.

You really have to wonder who the genius was that made the decision not to include a 2nd analog stick. I mean it really was such a stupid to thing to exclude.

But I think Sony should have addressed it with PSP-2000. They should have put a 2nd stick on there and just mapped that 2nd stick to the 4 face buttons. So that new owners could use the 2nd stick instead of the 4 face buttons while psp-1000 owners could still use the face buttons so they wouldn't be totally left out. But its probably too late now.

My first thought on the design was that it looked a lot like an MID (mobile internet device). Looks great. Imagine if the PSP-4000 included a hard drive and downloaded games exclusively though the PSN...I think that would be cool as it would cut out the UMD and possibly improve the battery life 2 fold. Whatever the device ends up being, it should be cool.
