Jane McGonigal, a member of the Institute for the Future and former lead community designer for 42 Entertainment, gave a talk at the Serious Games Summit at the GDC today. She talked about how to apply the techniques of collective intelligence used in alternate reality games and applying them to broader topics beyond entertainment.
One example is a new alternate reality game debuting April 30 about what could happen if another oil shock hits us. The game is at www.worldwithoutoil.org and it will generate a real world database of ideas from citizen-gamers who can develop ideas for what to do in case of such an event.
"Can a computer game teach collective intelligence?" she asked at the opening of her talk.
She also describes a new ARG.
