Riccitiello: Recession 'Blessing In Disguise'

At the DICE '09 conference, John Riccitiello told the attendees at the conference that the current recession has been 'a blessing in disguise [so that] we can clear away junk'. Stating that the overall goal from this is that the developers can 'stop sending pointless product to retail stores'. 'Junk is hard to compete with,' said Riccitiello. He felt that developers should shift their focus on quality and away from quantity.

"It seemed like anyone who could draw a guy with a gun with a crayon could get funded” by EA. They really should take the crayons away from upper management.

It's true about any business not just limited to the game industry.

Right now it's crunch time for all companies so the recession doesnt eat them up and make them consider the Dreaded Chpt. 11.

Everyone is trying (or should be) to push quality and get their name to stand out from the crowd so whatever few dollars people have to spend will be spent on them and not the latter.

We should be seeing a lot of "junk" disappear from our respective radars this year, this year is all about getting your name known.

But when a developer like Factor 5 (making a new Kid Icarus) and Free Radical (Star Wars Battlefront 3) have to close their doors...this is a pretty lame blessing in disguise...more like a slightly less painful punch in the face.
