What if the Final Fantasy VII Remake is Trash?

Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "Final Fantasy VII fans have been clamouring for a remake of the beloved Playstation 1 turn based RPG since the initial debut of the Playstation 3. The Final Fantasy VII technical demo that Sony showcased hasn't helped ease the pain of the fans dreaming of seeing Cloud and his party trading attacks with the various memorable enemies. However, fans seem certain that the remake would be as memorable as the original was for it's time. What if this is not the case? Read the full article to see why a remake of Final Fantasy VII may be a terrible idea."

My only concern is the voice-overs. I hope they don't ruin it with crappy voice overs like FFIV on the DS. At least it had an option to turn off the voice overs.

MrWeymes3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

An option for japanese voiceovers with english subtitles would be a must in my opinion.

Edit @ Liquid:

Yeah, I agree that the voice acting in the film was pretty good. I would like an option for japanese as well, though. It just seems to sound better with JRPGs. For instance, Infinite Undiscovery has painful english with no option for japanese.

Liquid Snake3597d ago

how about they just use the same voice over actors from FF7: Advent Children? The acting seemed pretty good.

lord_of_balrogs3597d ago

Heh, I just watched that movie two days ago. I realized the voice actor for Cloud was Jason Morgan from General Hospital which is a soap opera thta my mom watches.

Liquid Snake3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

don't forget Aerith, voiced by Mena Suvari (American Beauty, America Pie)

@Lord of Balrogs, nah Cloud is Voiced by Steve Burton, but still stars in the same show, General Hospital.

the combat system and leveling up

all i want updated is the graphics and voice work

please dont mess with the combat

MrWeymes3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

In my opinion, if the Final Fantasy VII remake came out for the Playstation 3, the combat system would be a little different. Look at how Lost Odyssey scored among critics. I thought its battle system was fine, but many felt it was archaic.

Personally, if the remake comes out, I would prefer that no change to the combat system occurs.

Chris3993597d ago

Using a further updated Crisis Core/ Agito engine.

An HD remake is years - if eternally - away anyhow. Oh, and people really need to stop thinking that SquareEnix, Sony, MS, or Nintendo actually CARE what consumers want.

They are concerned with one thing only, PROFIT.

After the sham that was Chrono Trigger DS (14 year old SNES port with a full price tag - releasing it on WiiWare would have been the nice thing to do, really), it wouldn't startle me in the least if they released FF VII on the DS. Or an HD version on the 360 as well (yes, Sony owns some rights, but MS throws money around and SquareEnix = moneywhores).

Sh*t, it could end up on the Wii.

I'm honestly not hoping for a remake anytime soon until the economy is more stable and none of the above scenarios might come to pass.

MrWeymes3597d ago

I was thinking that PSP remake would make a hell of a lot more sense as well. That way they don't have to tweak the graphics, gameplay and cutscenes as much.

They would just have to clean everything up a bit such as character models, etc. Fans would get what they want partially and Square Enix would make a huge profit.

princejb1343597d ago

the tech demo graphics on the ps3.. end of story
same battle system, same everything, just pretty graphics

mega BIG time3597d ago

how much more i enjoy rpgs without voice-overs. Lost odyssey is victim to bad voiceover. Notice how the most touching parts of the game are the dream sequences which contain no vo.

Tempist3596d ago

Look no matter which way you cut it, this game will disappoint becuase it will not have everything that everyone who's a super fan of the original FF VII had.

The fanbase has litterally set this game up to fail with the unimaginable expectations for it.

The best thing that can be done in regards to FF VII is to make a completely different game with a story that does not connect well with the orignal one. You cannot have the success that FF VII had, it's impossible to recreate that. Better off to have something completely new.

iamtehpwn3596d ago

I understand that there will be changes.

Look you guys, This was a game develop for PS1, with prerendered backgrounds.

Translating this into a full realize Masterpiece requires that certain things change. A remake requires some beefing up, but I do believe key elements should stay the same, like the combat system.

With the said, I wouldn't mind if the game was more refined in different areas, expanded on slightly (nothing huge, maybe just extra environments to explore and collect Materia from).

Hypothetical scenarios revolving around hypothetical games?

die_fiend3597d ago

Indeed, seems like a complete waste of time. The game doesn't even exist lol but like you said they're assuming it does, and then assuming it's quality...Some people have 2 much time on their hands and spend it thinking about useless things.
If it were to be remade then I'm sure it'd be damn good seen as the original was immense

MrWeymes3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

Yes, the original was immense as you put it back in 1997. If fans keep demanding this remake, Square Enix will put it in motion. Do you think that they dislike money, or something?

If you don't enjoy the article, that's fine. Everyone deserves an opinion. I just feel that fans demanding this remake are only looking at the positives as opposed to what could go terribly wrong. Thus, the article was written.

Edit @ Below:

I didn't mean to come off as rude. You said immense. Anyway, I understand that the Final Fantasy VII remake won't be coming out soon, but would probably come out a few years after the release of Final Fantasy XIII and Versus. Of course the remake would take a lot of work, but Final Fantasy VII is the the most beloved game of the franchise. If any Final Fantasy were to make an "immense" profit, it would be the remake of VII.

die_fiend3597d ago

As I put it? Isn't immense just a standard word? Why are you highlighting it's usage?
"If fans keep demanding this remake, Square Enix will put it in motion." Square already stated it'd take a dev team of about 1000 people to remake this properly. That's gonna cost a lot. It's not a case of Square not liking money, it's having enough to fund this game and make it profitable. Also, do you not think fans have been demanding this for years? (cos they have) And Square haven't said anything about making it, so that's a pretty poor argument, saying that they'll definitely do what the fans tell them. Do you even realise that the people who could make this game are currently making FF13 and Versus or did that not cross your mind either?

shoinan3597d ago

You have to remember, this is the same site that's been churning out "top 3 females" for every game franchise under the sun over the last few days. Games journalism my ***.

MrWeymes3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

I stand by my convictions that sexy female characters must be named. lol

If you would rather, I will post a detailed article on why Goro from Mortal Kombat wins the sex olympics.

Even if the FF7 remake gets low scores, im pretty sure that it will sell well. Not saying that it SHOULD sell even if its crappy, but slapping the name Final Fantasy 7 makes it officially at least a 1 mil seller.

MrWeymes3597d ago

Look at Dirge of Ceberus. It wasn't a bad game, but it certainly wasn't great.

In fact, I don't remember much of it at all which usually means that something wasn't very good.

Honestly, I would prefer that Final Fantasy VII be left alone, but if it does get remade, I want it to be good enough to qualify for game of the year.

White-Sharingan3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

thats true, even so dirge of cerberus sold 1mil+

did it deserve it? no, but heck even I bought that game.

but I do agree with you, if FF7 remake ever comes out, I truly hope its GOTY material

Foxgod3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

I would hate it if they remake it, and add a skills magic grid to it as in Final Fantasy 10.
It was a lot more fun to go Materia hunting then to do endless battles to earn points.

I found that system very dull.
They seriously would have to leave the battle system the way it is.

Cartesian3D3597d ago (Edited 3597d ago )

a perfect game needs 3 things :

1- identity :
unique and entertaining story
unique and lovely character (s)
2-tech :
perfect engine
perfect staff to develop the best presentation ,game mechanics and AI
means > Combination of 1&2 with level design(art style, boss fights,...) and gameplay design

thats all.. and FFVII has the FIRST ONE better than any other JRPG in my opinion. and it needs a perfect dev to use that identity
