DL writes: "Australians spent nearly $2 billion on video games and consoles in 2008 despite the gloomy economy, a rise of 47 per cent on the previous year.

More money was spent on gaming than cinema tickets or DVD videos.

The catalyst for much of the growth has been the astonishing success of Nintendo's Wii and DS consoles, which have dramatically widened the market for interactive entertainment and tempted many newcomers to purchase their first gaming system, including females and older Australians."
