What Constitutes A "System Seller?"

So here's the question: how good does an exclusive really have to be in order for it to have a significant impact on hardware sales? Um...REALLY good.

These days system sellers are gone. I know people can throw around Halo and Killzone 2. In reality though I think when most people look to purchase a gaming system they are looking at the overall collection of games. When I bought my PS3 last year it sucked having to decide what system I wanted more. In the end I went with PS3 because of God of War 3. It is without a doubt my favorite game franchise.

There are so few these days. It's really getting harder, I think a system seller now a days is not 1 Big game that turns the tables on the console war.

A system seller is now an exclusive game that doubles your sales for a month or so. Halo 3 for XBOX 360, MGS4 for PS3. Maybe Gears of War, Maybe Killzone 2.

But like I have said so many times, this is a generation of multi platform games and it certainly looks like the more affordable console is usually the way people go.

Here is my example.

before buying the ps2 i bought a dreamcast. at a friends house i played gta3. after 30 minutes. i handed him the controller. walked out of his house. and ran to the nearest game store to buy a ps2.

for the 360, i bought after reading about Huxley. back then the release date was september 2007.

for the ps3 i actually bought it after too many 360 hardware failures. but the goal was to buy one when mgs4 came out but ended up buying it about 6 months sooner.
