The 5 Most Recognisable Gaming Icons Ever

GamerLimit writes: "Nike to sports, McDonald's to hamburgers, Apple iPod to mp3 players; almost every major consumer industry has a handful of iconic companies that embody almost everything that industry is about. But what about the video gaming industry? An industry that has existed for decades, is the love of schoolkids everywhere and whose subject matter sparks the interest of art galleries, movies, the Guinness Book of World Records, must have icons of its own".

when i wasn't aware of all these other consoles, i had never heard of mario. i had heard of sonic and pacman tho. but yeah pacman, space invaders, tetris, should all be above mario. alot of people i know now have never heard of mario yet alone as a gaming icon.

Ziriux3336d ago

Xi3336d ago (Edited 3336d ago )

as the characters from the jin-roh anime...

poopsack3336d ago (Edited 3336d ago )

didnt guerilla once mention their inspirations in character designs, including Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, i wish others would do the same.

Xi3336d ago

I assume you're trying to imply that's where MC came from....

btw the game (marathon) came came out 1994, and began production in 1991, before power rangers started in 1993...

Tetsuryu3336d ago (Edited 3336d ago )

The Power Rangers began airing in the states in 1993. The franchise itself (Super Sentai) was around as early as the 70's.

Even the Jin-Roh designs (Protect Gear) had their share of inspiration from Darth Vader, The Chinese National Revolutionary Army, and some others.

"Playstation, Xbox, PC, mobile and every other form of gamer needs an icon as well, and Pac-man is the only icon with enough character and distinctiveness to do so…without any loyalty to a specific platform."

Playstation: Too many different franchises to establish just one character.

Xbox: Master Chief...duh!

PC: Gordon Freeman...where have they been?

Pac-man represents Namco and the Atari system. Mario was on the Philips CD-i. You can't say he's a brand loyalist.

KungFuHungSu3336d ago

Even if Master Chief can represent Xbox gaming, even if Gordon Freeman could attempt to represent PC gaming (Which I think is preposterous, btw)...none of them have the history and Platform neutrality of Pac man.

Mario is definitely property of Nintendo. CD-i? Who cares? Mario belongs to Nintendo and this cannot be disputed.

Pac man was chosen as number 1 because he is perceived as a character for gaming, and gaming only. No one thinks of any specific platform when they think of Pac man. namco is a games company, not a platform.

If you ask a random person on the street what half-life is they probably would have no idea what the hell you're talking about, but pac man and mario is know by everyone
