Sarcastic Gamer's RE 5 Demo Impressions

Sarcasticgamer.com demos the demo and lives to tell about it.

From the article: " The first level threw us into a primitive desert village bursting with corrugated steel and single story buildings. I sported a dashing sniper rifle, and my colleague a shotgun. After jogging a few steps towards the nearest friendly looking outpost, expecting a hospitable welcome and many chilled drinks, a cutscene triggered depicting a nasty fellow decapitating a man with an ungainly axe. As blood dribbled out the poor chap's severed neck, the leader of this vile troupe spotted us and sent every zombie in the surrounding area to our position."

That demo was a massive let down. No longer a day 1 buy for me

that weapon change thing has always concerned me...but glad to see its still more or less RE otherwise...even if I never cared for the switch to over the shoulder tps, than classic RE...

been watching videos for this a lot lately...and have mixed reactions that will only be settled by playing the demo...

for one thing...I know you are fighting zombies or whatever...that are automatically 'retarded'...but it comes down to the old cliche of like 5 people piling around you...then taking turns on who gets to attempt an attack...I understand this is also forgivable, as the needing to stop and shoot makes it so that you can't have everyone rushing you at once...but it definitely comes off, video wise at least, as extremely cheesy...

I am one though that did not care for RE4...which puts me in the minority for sure...I much prefered the classic RE games like 1 and 2...with fixed cameras hightening the terror...instead of combat that forced you to be weaker...

if you are going to be a third person shooter...do it like Gears, Uncharted, or MGS4...Gears executes what I think RE4 sort of tried...perfectly...but where Gears was a new IP and could therfor explore new areas of third person gameplay...it feels to me capcom toyed with the idea of drastically increasing the pacing...yet backed off out of fear of alienating their fanbase...

having to stand still and take pot shots at countless enemies...whom are also standing still (albeit in a slumped fashion) waiting for you to shoot them...isn't scary...in fact, I don't know what that is...scary was the fixed cameras that wouldn't let you quite see everything...but the sound and atmosphere let you know there was something unpleasant just about to get you...

this is like Gears, but with its nuts cut off...it makes a claim that 'you can't run and shoot in an RE game'...then forces the AI to behave in a way to lets that mechanic work...its like that one choice ultimately ruined another...which is the AI...i'm not impressed with it...not that zombies need great AI or anything..but they should at least be chewing on each other waiting for you to kill them or something...its like Capcom pioneered a camera view that could make an awesome action game (which they arguably did...only Epic utilized it)...but then realized they had to keep the slow and cumbersome control of RE (including RE4)...ah whatever...i'll know once i play it...

seriously...watch this...wtf...if the game is like that for any more than a 5 minute tutorial at the beginning...no thanks...

what's wrong with it?

Kleptic3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

uh...one guy standing in a room...he slowly moves toward you...you shoot...he falls down...then a flying thing hovers in the air 20 feet from you...does nothing...just hovers there...you shoot it...it dodges a few bullets, but still hovers there...then you kill it...

then 5 guys come walking down a path...all moving at about baby step speed...you turn and run...break open a box...press a button to pick up whatever was in it...bring up some inventory screen...turn back around...and one guy slowly walks down the path...you are out of ammo...so you stand there...he throws an axe towards you and misses...meanwhile your 'buddy' is getting sex'd on spikes somewhere, and it keeps blinking at you...warning you or something...

and then its over...I know its just a video clip...but seriously...where is the horror?...where is the surviving?...other than running away from a dim witted zombie...and where is the action?...and I didn't dig around for a boring looking video...i picked the first one that popped up on youtube...they ALL look like that to me...sometimes there are more zombies...standing there...sometimes there is a guy with an axe...slowly walking around swinging it at stuff...sometimes there is a guy with a chainsaw, that seemingly paces back and forth...

to each their own I guess...like I said...I did not like RE4 compared to the older games...its just my opinion...and I haven't played Re5's demo yet...but video wise, there is nothing in there that looks to appealing to me...

This game is awesome with a friend. And the controls are just fine, they take ten minutes to get used to.

They restrict your movement just like RE4. It's simply there to prevent running and gunning and encourages teamwork. What wrong with that? I think if every shooter was First Person and had Halo controls; they would be much easier. That doesn't mean it's a good idea.

after playing Dead Space these controls seem like a step back
