Gamers are "likely" drunks and druggies

CVG writes: "A US study has found that people who play games regularly are more likely to take drugs and drink alcohol than normal people. They could have saved a lot of time and money by just asking us though.

Professor Laura Walker, who led the study from Brigham Young University in Utah, said: "The most striking part is that everything we found clustered around video game use is negative." Makes you wonder if they actually tried to find anything positive."

It's like there's normal people and then there's "gamers"

lol

BobDog3249d ago

thats most likely because generally gamers are in the age category that alcohol and drugs are more prevalent

Chris3993249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

I don't drink, smoke or do any sort of narcotics.

I have been natural bodybuilding for over 10 years, I have the strongest VO2 max out of anyone I know and a BMI of 6%.

I do not eat sugar, transfats or processed foods.

I am probably one of the healthiest people I know (I have lots of healthy friends who game as well).

I have been gaming since the NES.

I'm not being a braggart, just stating my place in this demographic.

The sample is tremendously biased as they are interviewing only a SMALL SAMPLE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. Back when I was in school, I was perhaps the only person in all of campus who was not engaged in some sort of regular, daily drug/ sex/ alcohol use.

Take a bunch of teenagers who have never been away from home and give them absolute freedom and regular OSAP cheques (or whatever student-assistance is called in The States), and these "results" are really not all that surprising.

BobDog3249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

whats wrong with an active sex life?

Chris3993249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

I wasn't speaking for anyone else.

And then I went on to talk about the general behavior that everyone was observed doing at University. Jocks, preppies, gamers, whatever demographic you might want to poll probably all has a substantial cross-section of people engaged in drugs and alcohol. It's because of the environment and the lack of parental supervision.

I don't think that I'm better than anyone else for the choices that I make. And as far as sex goes, I'd rather have it with someone that I know and care about. Casual sex never appealed to me - especially with the health risks involved. Again, that's MY choice, I don't expect it of anyone else. People are free to do what they want with their own lives without my judgment.

That's the beauty of democracy.

JsonHenry3249d ago

That is like saying someone who has a hip replacement is more likely to drink prune juice and take heart medication.

It is the average age of the people that play video games that make them more likely to do those things. Not the fact that they play video games makes them more likely to do it.

Mini Mario3249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

This is one of the most pathetic articles ive ever read. N4G should be ashamed for even letting this get through. PATHETIC

animboo3249d ago

i guess i'm not a "normal" person if i'm a gamer. i dont drink nor smoke nor do drugs, hmmmmmm who are this "gamer" that they are studying about..? arent they a little kinda racist against gamer if this is what their talking/studying about.

TheDude2dot03249d ago

Yeah this does not make sense. There's the stereotype that gamers are total nerds and geeks. But do you really think nerds would do drugs and alcohol?

So that means that it must be non-geeks that are doing the drugs and alcohol. But the thing is that they were likely doing drugs before.

Think about it. Stoners and alcoholics are usually bums and stay at home. What's fun at home? Videogames.

Chris3993249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

If you think that is "elitist", taking care of yourself, I really don't know what to say to you.

Elitists are those who believe in a sense of superiority over others. I do not believe that I am superior because of the choices that I make, just that I make different choices. Those choices work for ME and me alone, and I do not judge others who take different paths in life.

I still have friends who club and party, I don't talk to them less or force my lifestyle upon them.

Elitists are generally quite judgmental, as you just displayed yourself in being.

Peace,
- C

The comments on N4G say alot about gamers.

It's pretty f'in bad.

viper_19973249d ago

Seriously, another "video games are bad for you" study. I bet they didn't even study whether or not these "alcohol" and "drug" users were doing these things before they got a game console - - I believe theres a lot of it, but myself and my friends don't; a lot of my XBL friends sound/act like they do and I'd be willing to bet they would all say they were doing this long before they started playing video games (or at least that VGs weren't the cause)

Hellsvacancy3249d ago
