AMD's new "Fusion" reboot: can diversity save Moore's Law?

One of the little-noticed announcements made at this past CES was the launch of AMD's "Fusion" rebranding, whereby the chipmaker has attempted to distill the fading remnants of the CPU + GPU hype leftover from its ATI merger and elevate it into a grand vision of the future of computing in the multicore era. This major rebranding, which portrays heterogeneous multiprocessing as a kind of spiritual ideal, has actually been on the 2009 roadmap since at least 2006. But in this time of cutbacks and tanking semiconductor revenues, the launch of such a massive online PR blitz seems a bit like an exercise in porcine cosmetology. And maybe it is... or, the company could be onto something.
