The Resurgence of 2D Gaming

Jacob Stutsman of Gamer 2.0 writes:

"As videogame machines look to the future, download services, portable systems, and indie PC developers are beginning to look back, wringing out new gameplay mechanics from the old 2D framework. Since much of the current incarnation of 2D exists as cloak and dagger, clandestine in old marketplaces and small corners of the internet, developers are focusing less on sequels and more on outputting a greater creative quotient. If 2D gaming isn't big business anymore, then developers will have a greater license to impose their particular vision, and it's much cheaper than modeling a standard 3D world. This is a win/win for fans of 2D."
