Sony: Competitors "Continue Peddling Add-Ons"

As the new year begins, Sony Computer Entertainment America's public relations department has issued a newly-formulated feature run-down that favorably compares the PS3's value to that of Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, directly calling out competitors who have fewer included features.

In a Wednesday press release headlined "Keeping Gaming and Entertainment Simple," the company emphasized out-of-the-box PS3 features such as Blu-ray functionality, built-in Wi-Fi, "huge hard drives," free online gaming and "Ten years of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new services and features."

Well if you are telling the truth and stating the facts, i guess it's ok to boast a little. Plus people need to know about the most advanced future proof console on the market.

Sony ripped into Microsoft the entire year before the PS3 launched. Remember Xbox 1.5? Yeah, that was the ehad of Sony saying that at the time. The differance between then and now is Sony is still in third place. There's not a whole lot you can fling when you are in last place. During the summer when Metal Gear launched Sony was very quick to make comparisons with the Xbox 360. It's typical marketing that everyone does.

FarEastOrient3480d ago

Don't forget where you come from Sony, remember your roots in innovation! That vibrator accessory for the PS2 works wonders and I wonder why it was never released in the States. ^_^

Bnet3433480d ago

Ironic because PS3 is not HD out of the box. I had to find this out until I bought a PS3 myself and needed to run back and buy an HDMI cable at RadioShack. I'm glad Sony's PR is full force. I seriously hate Microsoft PR. Bunch of idiots.

Death3480d ago (Edited 3480d ago )

“We want to pack everything in today and future-proof this as much as possible,” said Kazuo Hirai, the head of Sony’s U.S. game unit, in an interview. “It’s a box made of future technology as opposed to Xbox 1.5, which seems to be a combination of things available today,” added Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

This one is just funny,

“Microsoft is trailing behind us and is not a threat," Kutaragi declared. "It is good at improving, but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology. Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a karate master and Microsoft is still not a black belt."

I can list more, but it's kind of pointless. Sony slams Microsoft, Microsoft slams Sony, Nintendo slams them both, they both slam Nintendo etc. It's a pretty common business practice.

Marceles3480d ago

Yeah that was the old Sony when Kutaragi ran things, I miss those days. Now Sony doesn't say anything since all of a sudden they have to keep this humble image with the media.

SONY speaks the truth.

Willio3479d ago

lol good diggs on those comments. Those were preety funny to be honest. I find those remarks more humourous than MS's press attacks.

kwicksandz3479d ago

Sony have made ALOT of mistakes this gen, but making their system open to 3rd party addons such as controllers and headsets etc is a benefit that they should make more widely known. I hope the competition and future sony consoles pick up on this but i kinda doubt it will catch on due the extra $$$ a manufacturer can make by selling you the official one.

Absolutly and postively right! I know people now say that sony shouldnt have forced blu ray and built in wifi on people and should have just used a standard DVD drive.. That is so wrong, if sony did that then what would distinguish it from the 360?! Infact sony saved me over $200.00 by including blu ray because lets say sony didnt have blu ray in the PS3.. My TV stand currently has too much electronics to have a 360,PS3 and Seperate blu ray player. So if the PS3 didnt have blu ray i would have to spend $200.00 on a blu ray player PLUS $150.00 on a new TV stand that would hold the extra blu ray player so actually sony saved me $350.00 by including blu ray in the PS3..

People are so ungreatful for PS3 including blu ray, id love for Sony just as a test to discontinue the Blu ray PS3 models and release just a regular DVD model PS3 and i guarantee after months people would beg sony to re release the blu ray PS3.

Once Obama gets in office and cleans up shop and improves the economy (which i think he will) by then the PS3 will only be $300.00 and people will stop complaining about all the extra features the PS3 has

Death3480d ago

Isn't that part of the MSRP? For $599 at launch I'm pretty sure these ungrateful people were actually paying for the included Blu-Ray drive. If it was free you might have a point.

DJ3480d ago

Of course we get charged for the blu-ray drive, just like we get charged for the Wi-fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, Hard Drive, etc, etc.

But it's such a small component in terms of cost. Blu-ray drives are like $60 to manufacture. Big woop. If you want a real price culprit, look no further than the GPU and XDR Memory.

Death3480d ago

Please explain how someone is ungrateful for something they pay for? If you were ungrateful you wouldn't buy it. Who buys stuff they don't want? Sony didn't do anyone a favor. They included a Blu-Ray drive that added to the cost of the system and people decided if it was justifiable at that price point. It's a pretty simple concept. How does ungrateful factor into this?

By the way, at launch the Blu-Ray drive cost well over $200 and was the sole reason for making the PS3 late for the party. Backwards compatability is estimated to have cost about $15 and that was yanked due to "consumer demand".

Sarcasm3480d ago (Edited 3480d ago )

$399 for a 360 elite for 120gb of HDD, no wifi, no blu-ray.

or a PS3 for $399 with everything included. (Except a $6 HDMI cable :P )

I'm grateful the PS3 includes all those things off the bat. Wifi "FTW"

Willio3479d ago

Sony pushed Next-Gen Tvs. Im grateful for that.

The Great Melon3479d ago

Please keep politics out of gaming discussions. It is depressing that we will have to spend four years with a president who is inexperienced and already paving the way for future mistakes by placing the same people who helped cause this current financial situation. Hopefully after four years there will be a candidate that actually shows some promise for the country and not just in charisma. Sorry to lash out, but I am tired of many people viewing Obama as the second coming Jesus.

So.... PS3 is great value. I finally bought an HDTV and the ps3's full potential is being utilized.

pansenbaer3480d ago

Ha, you make it sound like you are the one in last place.

"I can't hear you when you're all the way in last place"

That's how you should have said it.

g4me_he4d3480d ago

Don't worry Sony is only warming that 3rd spot up cause that is where the 360 will be in the foreseeable future. See I can talk smack too. Oh and welcome to my ignore list.
