Here's a convenient list of Variety's videogame critics' top ten games of 2008, along with our most disappointing and most overrated, all in one place. For full details on all our choices, read the detailed posts we've been doing for the past two weeks.

A few interesting stats:

-The only thing all four of us agreed about: "LittleBigPlanet" as one of the year's three most most overrated videogames (Thus the not-too-unexpected barrage of comments)

-The two games listed by all four of us in different categories: "Fallout 3," on three top ten lists and one (ok, my) most overrated; "Grand Theft Auto IV," on my top ten, Leigh's most disappointing, and Tom and Chris' most overrated

-The game mentioned the most on our top ten lists: Tie between "Fallout 3," "Braid," and "No More Heroes," all listed by three of us

-If points were awarded based on our rankings, what game comes out as Variety critics' overall top choice? "Fallout 3" with 25 points, followed by "Braid" with 19 and "No More Heroes" with 15. Even if you take away a few points when one person calls a game overrated, "Fallout 3" remains number one. Which doesn't make me happy, but I know when I'm outnumbered...

Thanks for saving us clicking the link, damn! these guys really hate LBP.

SL1M DADDY3267d ago

Creating and playing and I have yet to be tired of the game. To say it was as bad as they do is just plain poor. Shame on them.

Oh boy. Variety.

Thanks. I needed a laugh for tonight.

Were these the same clowns who nominated Left 4 Dead for best story of the year, or was that Jokatu? I tend to mix Variety and Jokatu up a lot...

caladbolg7773268d ago

It was Crecente from Kotaku.

Seriously, Left4Dead for best story. LOL.

solar3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

all 4 opinions have LBP as most overrated. lets see how the fanboys take this one. i have a feeling what way it will go on this ps3 heavy site.

i was so jacked to get LBP when i first saw it....however its shine didnt last long for me. a friend recommended it to me, i might rent first see how it is.

i do agree with the GTAIV being overrated. yawn.

i am very surprised to not see Dead Space on anyone's list. i played a bit of it at a local store and have yet to rent it. from what i played it has the atmosphere of a Half Life game. which is top notch in my book.

my most disappointed has to be FC2. i can not get into that game. ive tried....over and over...yet i cant seem to like it. shame.

Fishy Fingers3268d ago

I was the same with FC2. Technically it's a masterpiece but it just isn't that much fun to play. Just give it up bro, gaming should never become a chore.

solar3268d ago

thats pretty much what im thinking Fishy. every time i backtrack i have to kill all the guys in the camp i already cleared out. very annoying. i havent played it in so long did they finally release a patch with WideScreen support?

L4D has kept my attention away from Fallout 3. even tho i know it shouldnt. why does Valve have to make MP games that are soooo much damn fun? i have ME and Fallout 3 ive barely touched thx to TF2 and L4D :( i need to expand. but it is so damn hard when you have so much damn fun.

myothercar3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

There's a ton of screwed up BS in those lists. LittleBigPlanet being most overrated and not even showing up on any of their top tens isn't the only thing people are going to flip out about here. What, is this blind PS3 fanboy central just because one game people here are defending from Variety's attacks HAPPENS to be a PS3 exclusive? Of course not. If anything it just means LBP is so loved all around. If I were a PS3 fanboy I wouldn't be questioning why other PS3 exclusives I think are inferior to LBP are on the list but not LBP itself. Are you a Dead Space fanboy for wishing it were on the list? No. There are also plenty of multiplatform or 360 games missing from their lists and there are plenty of games on the list that a lot of people WOULDN'T have on there.

Why is The Club even on there? I suspect that person only played a few games all year.

caladbolg7773268d ago

I know what you've mean. I've caught the same bug. I bought dozens of great titles for multiple platforms this seasons, but all I've been playing is Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. I can't bring myself to play anything else.

If you Sony fanboys are done whining, one of those editors put MGS4 as #1. Nice list from all 4 editors. Nice to see some of them mention Persona 4, Fallout 3 and Chrono.

I agree with LBP being overrated. I rented it, and it was nothing special. Far Cry 2 is more innovative than LBP.

stephen20053268d ago

Seriously...Far Cry 2 is more innovative????

I guess I gotta pick up Far Cry 2 then and check out this new wave of video gaming that I missed. A First Person shooter...damn, the possibilities are endless....

ikiru33853268d ago

^^

"Far Cry 2 is more innovative than LBP."

hahahahahaha.......

lord_of_balrogs3268d ago

What's so innovative about LBP? Being able to create levels, well you can change levels using Forge in Halo. User generated content, same with Halo, I can upload maps and gametypes I made and anyone can take it. Jumping on platforms to the finish line, even Mario has that. LBP was overhyped, it's nothing special.

ikiru33853268d ago

@lord_of_balrogs

LBP is not so much innovative as it is pretty extensive in terms of customization. the possibilities are limitless. LBP is designed for everyone, even though not many people will like it. that's fine. It's just that Farcry 2 is pretty much standard FPS fare with some sandbox thrown in, which doesn't make it innovative at all, in my opinion.

myothercar3268d ago

LittleBigPlanet creators have made Gradius, Duck Hunt, Tic Tac Toe (with AI), and Tetris. That is how limitless the possibilities are in LBP's editor.

What has Forge allowed people to make besides videos of Master Chief jumping around an ordinary pre-made map with Super Mario sound effects dubbed in?
