Harrison hints at TV downloads

Sony worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison has dropped serious hints about downloadable TV content for PlayStation 3.

"I think PlayStation 3 needs to stand for gaming and digital entertainment in the living room pushing the envelope of high definition, pushing the envelope of broadband, and of course that includes more than just games," he told 1UP.

"We don't have the announcements that you're probably looking for today, but it is digital data. We have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that PlayStation Network needs to deliver whatever Xbox Live delivers. So they should do this too.

360 has been doing this for the last 4 months. Pushing the envelope?

We know what xbl can do.............This is ps3 we're talking about. Which is getting better and better everyday. What does it take for people to just stay on topic???? This article has nothing to do with xbl. Phil Harrison didnt mention anything about xbl in this article and this is definately pushing the envelope from the ps2 to the ps3...

Morons just cant stay away from good news for ps3......And dont want to see the ps3 do what their beloved console is doing and maybe better. The future is looking very bright for SOE.....!!!

Peace..... for the imature crowd...."No Flame Intended"

Sony has been saying these features were in the works since before the launch of the PSX test project. TiVo capabilities, media downloading, etc.

off of Xbox Live, the better it is for PS3 not 360. If they both offer the same services, PS3 will always win because their's no annual subscription. PS3 will be gaining a huge online userbase

Sony owns Movies/Tv/Music Studio's.This will be a major advantage when making content avalible for down load on PS3.

but wouldn't it be nice if they didn't have to copy the xbox live service? This would be better for the PS3 because it means the user would get something they couldn't on the LIVE service. And if that something was something the user prefered then they would choose the PS3 over the XBOX. By copying the PS3 doesn't get that defrentiator and so may loose out, mainly due to the costs of each system.

just trying to see it from the "everyday user" persepective.

You don't need to be a paying member of XBL to download movies, tv shows, etc from the service. That's marketplace content and both gold & silver members have equal access to it. The fee paid for XBL is for online multiplayer & priority access to gaming demos. Oh, and it's worth it - especially when you compare it to the "competition" (I use the term loosely).
