Every game has a first level, but only 25 are timeless.
I really enjoy playing "let's forget about the PC". It's fun. And Gears of War, God of War, and Halo get a higher rank than Super Mario Bros? Errrr....
My list is: COD4, Halo 1 and Halo 3, both Gears of War, Ratchet and Clank TOD, MGS1 and MGS2, Sonic 1 (Ahh Green Hill Zone), and of course like you said, Super Mario Bros.
My #1 pick is Bioshock. The first 30 minutes of that game are truly special.
@Kigmal I was gonna say something about Call of Duty 4. I guess maybe its not considered the "First" level, but riding that helicopter, making your way to the crate and hauling ass out of that ship was nuts. That was my first "next-gen" experience this generation.
I think it was a good list except that Gears of War shouldn't have been on there at all, it was kind of unmemorable for me. Super Mario Bros. should've been top 5, and Metal Gear Solid 2 should've been on there somewhere. Other than that, it's the least crappy list GameDaily's ever put together so that's something, right?
Ha. Yeah there lists are usually pretty crappy. And I hate the fact they feel the need to put each game on its own page. It takes forever to get through them all.
Out of all the games I've played, I think that God of War 2 had the best First Level.... I mean, in the first level you fight a Boss and the entire level consists of you fighting this giant Boss while working your way through the level....Just pure Epicness. I like it when games like God of War 2 just throw you right into the action from the beginning and I hope God of War 3 is the exact same.
God of War 2 should of been #1 on the list
Yeah, God of War games are a real kick to the teeth right off the bat. Love how they do that.
God of War 2, and Call of Duty 4's ship mission for me, incredible stuff. And Shadow of the Colossus had an amazing beginning, though it can't be called a 'level' and Medal of Honor: Frontline had an intense first level.
Certainly for its time the opening D-Day sequence was incredible. I think it still holds up today, and I have yet to play an opening stage that packs the same wow factor I had back then after stepping off the boat. Neat stuff...
I hated the ship mission. I don't even like the ship map in the multiplayer.
...would have to be World 1-1 -Super Mario Bros, without a shadow of a doubt
Half Life The intro sequence was groundbraking incredible cinematic and biggest "wow" effekt i ever had in gaming
Half Life itself is one big level :)
for me i would have to say the tanker mission from MGS2 or the virtous mission from MGS3 and i just thought of another, beggining of resident evil 2 when you making your way to the police department and theres the lickie monster thing crawling on the walls
I dont agree with alot of choices, and theres some obvious absences, like the first "level" of Resident evil original
I refuse to click on a site 26 times to read an article.
26? how bout trying 42
I hate that trend so much. We get it, you like to make your hits look larger than they really are, stop making it so damn annoying to read something on your site.
Played through most of the ones listed (probably around half or more) and i have to say. The first level in the original GoW sticks out the most. It's nothing like battling that Hydra for the first time. Eventually pulling it's main head through the spike. Jumping into his mouth to get the key from the captain and kicking the pansy back down into the Hydra's mouth. Sure the Colossus of Rhoads, one was pretty awesome as well but nothing beats that first level in the original game.
though would maybe still have gone for GOW2 above 1 just because of the huge scale of pursuing the collossus round the city THEN having to fight up it's insides after a huge battle on the dock is breathtaking. There's definitely not much between them though and I await the third installment with very baited breath indeed. There are some glaring omissions from the list(was surprised by just now many I remembered too)-definitely the boat level from COD4(second best level in the whole gamde behind All Ghillied Up)springs to mind as do the first levels of the first two Sonics but even though there's still an oddly high Xbox placing this is about the best list I've seen from GD. I also feel they are right about Super Metroid-which is the game that really got me hooked on console gaming way back when.
i call rubish! A bunch of good ideas but the order is messed up. next on gamedaily.com : top 63 best ending credits!
Portal would obviously be #1.
Ratchet and Clank 3's opening level should of got a mention.
Up Your Arsenal? IMO The best Ratchet in the series.
Why yes, yes it would. The opening for that was excellent, what with the random skydiving and giant lazer firing robots, music was jazzy too.
...the opening level on Halo was just ho-hum in my opinion. The thing that got me was the smooth framerate and solid look to the ship. Until Halo I had not seen a great looking FPS on a console. Gameplay was nothing special. However, when you step out of the escape pod at the beginning of the second level ... wow. That was a real jaw dropping moment.
Same here. Arriving on Halo was the gob smacking moment for me too. I always just want to skip past the first level on the ship, also, waiting for the pistol was annoying.
Agreed, the first level was nothing but repetitive corridors, nothing special
mgs1 opening was epic to me never saw cinematic flair like that in a game before then and of course gotta give mario some love too 1-1.
http://www.youtube.com/watc... Great Video Final Fantasy 13, Versus 13 and Lost Odyssey(1:49) in Vid. Great fn Awesome Opening Scene..
First mission of COD4 had my jaw on the floor. I've never seen graphics that good before. Now that I think about it, World at War's first level was awesome too, with the burning huts and the flare that illuminated the whole forest.
Every mission in COD4 had my jaw on the floor. That game is a masterpiece, and it still has the best multiplayer of any game available, as far as I'm concerned.
Well, that's true. COD4 is a masterpiece. Also, having played Halo 2 for years, playing H3 for the first time on a HD tv was crazy.
Medal of Honor : Frontlines The first mission was extremely awesome (and probably the only good thing the series ever had)
Too many new games up there. Stick with the classica in an article like this.
My personal favorite "first levels": Tony Hawk's Underground Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (how the hell was this NOT on the list?) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (GBA/GameCube) 007: Agent Under Fire Ikaruga A lot of them are probably for sentimental reasons, but hey, whatever :P But the be-all/end-all first level in any videogame is definitely Super Mario Bros. What were they thinking putting it at #8? D:
Yeah, Agent Under Fire was an incredible game in and of itself. I freakin' LOVED it!
Halo's first level (if you can call it that) was good. Halo 3's first level was like having sex with your uncle.
I really hope I didn't just read that correctly... D:
Bioshock Crysis Assassin's Creed (Despite the repetition in the rest of the game, it wowed us ALL for the first hour, did it not?) Devil May Cry 1 & 3 God of War 1 & 2 Ico Prey Heavenly Sword Killzone Call of Duty 1, 2, and 4 Half-Life 1, 2, and the Episodes Prince of Persia: Warrior Within Bully Shadow of the Colossus takes this one by a MILE! A freakin' HUGE mile!
Yeah, Prey has a pretty good first level. Especially when 'Don't fear the reaper' turns on.
Yeah...that's such an amazing plug there. It sets the atmosphere.
force unleashed 1st level is great ? did i just read it right ?
... Half Life 2? -Squall
Damn no love for Medal of Honor Frontline.
Although there's no way anyone is going to fully agree with this, I have to say this is the most respectable "best list" I've seen for some time. Sure, I'd re-order a few things but it's still a solid list.
