Videogamer writes: "2008 was a great year for games. Left 4 Dead, GTA IV, Gears of War 2, the list of quality titles is as long as your arm. But it was also a year packed full of video game disappointments. Here, we run down our Top 10: Disappointments of 2008, a list that proves that for every stupendously fantastic gaming moment, there's always a depressing kick to the stomach lurking somewhere around the corner."

Home, yes.
LBP and MGS4, no.
PS3, debatable.

For me it was GTAIV, yes a disappointment
And the LittleBigPlanet launch issues

Yi-Long3635d ago

... it has everything I want in a game: brilliant setting, great memorable characters, great story, good gameplay, etc. It's a great open-world crime-game.

It doesnt have the 'fun' and 'chaos' some of the older GTA's and Saints Row have, but to me personally, I didnt EXPECT it to have that, and I dont really care about GTA4 not having it. I'm still having fun with the game's story-line, which has been interesting.

Ah well, different strokes for different folks.

For me, GTA4 is the game of the year (and LBP a close second)

GTA4 was a regression in the series. If you disagree with me, then you're in denial.

Less vehicles, less weapons, less character customization, hell, the map was even smaller. GTA4 being multiplat ruined the series. Thanks a lot 360.

If GTA would have been exclusive to Playstation, GTA4 would have had WAY better graphics, and WAY deeper gameplay.

But, in reality, it's just a monotonous game. They didn't innovate anything. I beat it once and traded it in, and I'm a HUGE GTA fan.

LBP launch issues weren't that bad as everyone made it out to be. What happened to GTA4, it needed that GTA San andreas feel. It had a lot to do but not at the amount of SA. But IV wasn't as much as a disappointment for me. Also GTA was never exclusive the first gta game was on the pc.

ChampIDC3635d ago

Amnesiac, by your logic, the PS2 was holding back the series last gen, and that's obviously not true. A more powerful system does not make a better game. It's all up to the developers to do it right.

GTA4 was mine. game was good but it just wasn't fun after a while. The keeping up your relationships killed it for me.

"How was GTA4 a disappointment for you!?"

"It doesnt have the 'fun' and 'chaos' some of the older GTA's and Saints Row have, but to me personally, I didnt EXPECT it to have that"

"and I dont really care about GTA4 not having it. I'm still having fun with the game's story-line, which has been interesting."

So let me get this straight...u would rather a game with an "interesting story" over a game thats "fun"...god i love this gen

... is the extreme nickel-and-diming for everything, from Sackboy-outfits, to ridiculous HOME-clothes (yeah... I'm gonna PAY to walk around in HOME in some brand-items, so I can advertise their products for them(!).... how much does a hat with 'STUPID' cost!?), to old games, to DLC.

The DLC is just ridiculous. Yes, when it's done THE RIGHT WAY, it IS a welcome addition to a game (MGS level packs for LBP, GTA4 DLC). However, 95% of the DLC seems to be stuff that could and should have been included in the retail-game, and is only there to make a quick easy buck.

It's a very worrying trend, and apparently there are many people who couldnt care less about being part of the problem and just throw their money at it. A shame, really.

Other disappointments were indeed Pro Evo 2009 (once again, sigh), the Wii line-up (not unexpected), the PSP drought, and HOME.

Ah well.... apart from all the complaining, I do feel 2008 was a very good year :) Lots of great games came out, and prices went down, especially the last few months.

MegaMohsi3635d ago

DLC definitely #1, you buy a game at full price only to be offered something so small that it couldve easily been put onto the original game and then they charge you extra for it. Exclusive DLC is even worse on multi-platform games, I mean come on if a game is released on more than 1 platform, so should the DLC. The primary reason a multi-plat game is released is to make the most possible profit, shouldnt it be the same case with the DLC? Especially if it's something significant (GTA4, Fallout 3)

Amnesiac3635d ago

I'm glad someone feels the same way I do.

HOME is the biggest joke ever when it comes to the nickel and diming. 49 cents for a hat?! LOL!

I've complained about this on N4G before and I got flamed for "being cheap" and I heard a lot of "OMGOSH IT'S ONLY 50 CENTS OMGOMGOMGOMG, HOME IS FREE, PSN IS FREE, HOW CAN YOU COMPLAIN?!!".

I agree, 50 cents is nothing. But it's about the principle of it being overpriced. Sony is a multi-billion dollar corporation, the fact that that anyone feels that they need to nickel and dime us to justify HOME/PSN being free is the biggest joke I've ever heard in my life.

bviperz3635d ago

is people like yourselves who cry about something that is optional. Nobody is forcing you to pay the .49 cents for the shirt/hat/glasses/whatever, so why are you complaining about nickel and diming? Seriously, if it was forced upon you, then I can see your need to complain, but WTF, Home itself is optional (not even a game) so why the hell are you crying foul for a .49 cent shirt? Yet, I'm sure you pay to play online? Now THAT is nickel and diming. For most of us who pay our own bills, we pay an ISP for online access and still have pay for the game and an added fee to play the game online?! Think about that before crying about .49 cent clothing that Sony doesn't force you to pay for in a virtual social world that they don't force you to download and is free.

Now your talking sence, i agree. Why couldnt it be in the game in the first place, ... If they had made it later on than i can understand because it wasnt ready in time. But sometimes u gotta wonda how much they hold back for DLC.

akaFullMetal3635d ago

gta4 was my year disappointment, i didnt even finishs the game. I got so bored with it i didnt even want to continue, i think i got to about 30 percent.

Keowrath3635d ago

Completely agree with you, It's the first GTA game I've owned that I haven't got 100%... Hell, I barely hit 60% and didn't beat the story. Saints Row 2 came out of the blue for me and I've had WAY more fun with it. Sure it doesn't look quite as pretty as GTA but I'm not a graphics whore and the games actual content is what's important and between the monotonous missions and annoying as hell friend system the game was a major let down.

"Let's go play darts!"
"Let's not! I'm actually enjoying doing what I'm doing right now"
"Oh Nico you don't love me anymore" = minus friendship.

TO ME, the game was a MAJOR disappointment, great if you enjoyed it but I didn't in the end and it's the perfect No.1 of biggest disappointments on my list.

I would put Haze on that list as I was hoping for some great 4 player splitscreen action and Sadly I'd also put Resistance 2 on the list too (please don't lynch me!) I had sooo much fun with the first game playing splitscreen with my girlfriend and other mates. I was absolutely devastated to hear it was taken out of the sequal =( (I'm not a big online player btw)

These are my oppinions and I know they differ from some/most/all (I don't care =p) of you I also only commented on the only current gen console I own as I find it difficult to be disappointed in something I haven't played or tried =)
