The Globe & Mail - The year in gaming

The Globe & Mail writes: "It's been a year of strong growth for the video game industry. Despite the global economic downturn, software makers and hardware manufacturers continue to post year-over-year revenue increases. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV sold more games the week it was released than any game before it, and Nintendo's Wii console continued its record-setting sales pace.

What's more, 2008 saw an avalanche of critically acclaimed titles. Notching an average review rating of 98 per cent, GTA IV is the highest-rated game of all time on review aggregation site Metacritic.com, while games like LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid IV: Sons of the Patriots, and Fallout 3 were close behind.

In other words, 2008 was a terrific time to be a gamer. Look below for specifics on how your preferred platform fared over the last 12 months, read about our favourite games of the year, see visual breakdowns of important industry numbers, and find out what you can expect to play come 2009."
