Sony Set to Market Blu-ray as Winner of Format War

"Citing the recent sales numbers, Sony exec David Bishop is claiming that the high-def format war can officially be declared over. With a movie sale ratio of almost 2:1 Blu-ray discs are being declared the victor over rival HD-DVD by Blu-ray supporter Sony...

is just the kind of stupid arrogance that has helped them so much already.

This is a bit of "clever" company speal. The more you state yours is the winner, the weaker the opponent looks.

Microsoft did it with the 'the next-gen war is over, we've reached 10million' and Sony will do the same with Blu-ray.

We're not that stupid though are we?

Boink3632d ago

if your company already looks arrogant because of serious bad PR already, then you could do more harm than good.

Who really cares who wins. I will not buy any HD player till it is dirt cheap and they can find a way to back up the movies. I store all my movies on my hard drive and stream them though my 360 using the free software My Movies. Until I can do that with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD then I will not buy.

I have always thought that Blu-Ray would win, was because of the support it has behind it. The number of studios putting out movies on Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD means that ultimately there will be more movies that come out on the Blu-Ray format. Once consumers see this in stores and movie rental places they will go with the format that offers them the most choices of movie titles. Its why VHS won over Betamax. Blu-Ray releasing 25 movies to HD-DVD's 11 is just the beginning of this trend.

The Blue Ray is the winner after less than a year on the market in HD Movies department according to Sony's David Bishop. If the Playstation 3's total sales numbers in November 2007 is still behind the Xbox 360's, does that make the PS3 the loser in the HD Games arena? I'm trying to see how this works.

time. it's been on the shelves for 3 months. Although Blue Ray is overwhelming HD DVD and will probably come out on top. We all still have to wait to see who comes out on top in the next gen race. I'd say about 12 to 18 mos. MS can't claim victory yet, it is way to soon. If blu ray does come out on top, I think there will be trouble for microsoft. Can they compete with standard DVD format vs Blue ray? Will 360 gamers be forced to buy the HD DVD add on? Only the future will tell. If things continue like they are then game devs are going to go with the format that allows them to be more creative with no boundaries. This is my opinion

Hubris.
Sony just does not know when to stop with this.
And BluRay is outselling HD-DVD now, but HD-DVD was outselling through the holiday season, meaning overall sold numbers are much closer.

From Slashdot's forum:
"Citing the recent sales numbers, Sony exec David Bishop is claiming that the next gen console war can officially be declared over. Looks like the Wii and 360 are the winners."

Yes, trying to declare BluRay the winner now is just as stupid.

Hehe! How apropos.

I don't know how Sony can even consider making such an announcement - it boggles the mind. Didn't it take like... 10 years or more for VHS tapes to dominate Betamax, even when at first it looked like Betamax was going to reign supreme?

This just looks like borderline desperation from Sony, in all honesty.
